Your morning fashion and beauty report: Cold weather dressing, Natalie Portman's engagement ring and Lady Gaga's latest 'nose' make news

Wow, am I glad to be in California right now! Just took a quick look at Google Trends and as I write, it seems that 16 of the top 20 searches have something to do with how to commute through the snow in the Northeast, which was pounded by a major storm overnight. If you're stuck in those conditions -- or soon to travel to a colder clime -- All the Rage can at least help with what to wear. Our Jenn Harris explains some options for creating one of the cutest cold-weather looks seen at Sundance in her Frugal Fashion column. [LAT]

Apaul Other looks at Sundance involved animal print scarves, like the one Elizabeth Banks is wearing here, puffer coats and adorable kooky hats. [WWD]

But for really bundled-up-to-stay-warm style, check out what guys were wearing last week when they hit the slopes at Aspen's Gay Ski Week. [WWD]

The stunning engagement ring on Natalie Portman's finger is more than just beautiful. It's also eco-friendly and socially conscious. Designed by her choreographer fiance Benjamin Millepied and jewelry designer Jamie Wolf, the stone is an antique round diamond; the pave diamonds are certified as conflict-free, (meaning no one was hurt or treated unfairly in the mining) and the platinum is recycled metal. [InStyle]

Emma Watson has unveiled her third collection -- it's supposed to be her last -- for ethical fashion label People Tree. The British actress made famous by the "Harry Potter" series started the collection after she began college in the U.S.  [Telegraph]

Meanwhile a somewhat more established designer is the subject of a just-announced retrospective, "The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk." The exhibit is scheduled to open at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) on June 17 and will be on display there through Oct. 2. The retrospective marks the 35th anniversary of Gaultier's label. Paris Fashion Week: Mugler menswear is reborn, and Lady Gaga is the midwife [Updated]

Rage_mugler

The big question on everybody's mind going into the Thierry Mugler menswear show on the opening night of Paris Fashion Week was whether Lady Gaga would be present, because it was the debut collection for the new creative director, Nicola Formichetti, who has helped shape some of the entertainer's more distinctive looks.

Unless she was well disguised, she wasn't evident in the front of the house -- but she was definitely heard. Listed in the show notes as "the musical director of this menswear project," she created the soundtrack that played during the show.

But the possibility of such an A-level celebrity sighting was enough to pack the house (well, a concrete-floored automotive garage in Paris' 3rd Arrondissement, actually) with a standing-room only crowd, which witnessed the rebirth of the label.

Rebirth because in addition to new creative blood at the helm, there's been a name change. From now on, the clothing collections will be known simply as "Mugler" and be accompanied by a new logo, both

Your morning fashion and beauty report: Fashion world abuzz over Golden Globes, and who will design Kate Middleton's wedding gown?

The biggest news in the fashion world Monday is coming out of Sunday's Golden Globes and the men's collections on the runways in Milan. Our Adam Tschorn will keep you up to date on the latter on All the Rage this week. Then he'll fly to Paris to report on what's happening there.

One thing to look forward to in Paris: Nicola Formichetti, the new creative director at Thierry Mugler, has tapped client Lady Gaga to create the soundtrack for Mugler's show on Wednesday. [WWD]

Abullock We had wondered if the Golden Globes would lift the red carpet out of the doldrums it seemed to be stuck in last year, as stars and starlets walked a new gantlet of photographers almost every week at a multitude of awards shows, charity events and premieres. Times' Fashion Critic Booth Moore applauded the minimalism she saw in her favorite looks at this year's Globes, worn by actresses such as Tilda Swinton, Claire Danes, Emma Stone and Hailee Steinfeld. [LAT] Across the pond, the Telegraph agreed that less was more. [Telegraph] Women's Wear Daily liked seeing color -- blush, pink, emerald green -- on the carpet. [WWD]

StyleList got off some zingers about a few of the hairstyles, being almost as mean (and funny) as Ricky Gervais: "Scarlett Johansson opened the show fresh from a hair appointment  with whatever salon worked on the Bride of Frankenstein. Maybe she was trying to send a message about Ryan Reynolds -- the soon-to-be-ex-'groom' to her 'bride' -- to Sandra Bullock, who has recently been keeping company with the actor. Sandra herself had the other funky hair look of the night, a severe style with bangs that evoked Cleopatra had she been a member of the Manson family. You would definitely not want to have been caught between those women backstage!" Meow! [StyleList]

Mila Kunis was glowing, and maybe it was because esthetician Scott-Vincent Borba had tested his new, not-yet-available-to-the-public $7,000 facial on her. That's right -- 7 and three zeroes. The facial uses rubies and diamonds. [InStyle]

In non-Globes-related news, word has it that Kate Middleton won't reveal the name of her wedding gown designer until the royal nuptials April 29, but speculation that it is British designer Bruce Oldfield -- a favorite of Princess Diana's -- kicked into high gear over the weekend. [People]

The world's fascination with Coco Chanel continues. "Culture Chanel," an exhibition of more than 400 items tracing her life, opened in Shanghai over the weekend and is scheduled to run through March 14. [WWD]

Lady Gaga's superfans get their 15 minutes in V magazine

Gaga

It was only a matter of time before a glossy publication chronicled a few of Lady Gaga's relentlessly expressive fans, whom she lovingly calls "Little Monsters."

In its newest issue, which hits newsstands and bookstores on Thursday, V magazine whittled down more than 8,000 reader photo submissions -- all responding to an online call for entries in November -- to 200 of the most eye-popping Gaga worshipers.

The magazine used the submitted shots to create a two-page collage of its favorite photos, creating a group portrait of sorts that expertly captures what will likely be a memorable moment in pop culture history.

All the human-hair bows, pointy shoulder pads and creative use of netting recall circa 1980s Madonna mania, when Madge's obsessed fans dolled up in lace half-shirts, stacks of rubber bracelets and spiky bangs to pay homage to pop's most provocative fashion plate.

Gaga, who's pretty much always in costume, certainly gives her fans enough looks to emulate --and probably cringe over years down the road.

Your morning fashion and beauty report: Phoebe Philo, Alexa Chung, Naomi Campbell among honorees at British Fashion Awards

Alexachung
Phoebe Philo, creative director of Celine, was named designer of the year at the British Fashion Awards on Tuesday. Alexa Chung (above, left, with Taylor Momsen at a previous event) nabbed the award for British Style, and Alexander McQueen was recognized for Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design. Other winners were Mulberry, for designer brand; Nicholas Kirkwood for accessory designer; Patrick Grant of E. Tautz for menswear designer; Meadham Kirchhoff for emerging talent in ready-to-wear; and Husam El Odeh for emerging talent, accessories.  Nicola Formichetti won the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator. This year, two new awards were added: Naomi Campbell won the Special Recognition Award for her 25-year career, and Burberry walked off with the Digital Innovation Award. [WWD]

Please, Barbie, no, not the Meat Dress! Hard as it is for me -- a lover of Barbie and hater of the Meat Dress -- to imagine, there was the supermodel doll decked out in several Lady Gaga looks from 2010, including the most infamous.  We owe it all to Entertainment Weekly, which set up a photo gallery online with the doll styled as the outre entertainer. (They used dental floss to keep the meat booties from falling off Barbie's tiny feet.)

Fashion "It" girl Blake Lively and Karl Lagerfeld seem to have a mutual admiration going on and Tuesday it was announced that the "Gossip Girl" star will appear in a new Chanel advertising campaign. [FabSugar]

John Galliano, in New York for the reopening of Dior's flagship on 57th Street, loves the diversity of today's fashion, is a little dubious about online shopping and says never, ever take a friend with you on a serious shopping trip. "Because she's only shopping for herself...the last person she's thinking of is you," he tells fashion writer Bridget Foley. [WWD]

Your morning fashion and beauty report: The Olsens add handbags. Marc Jacobs adds books. And Lady Gaga adds some spark to GQ Italia cover.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, already proven designers with three successful lines, will add handbags and eventually shoes to their luxury line, The Row. Look for the bags to hit stores next fall. [People]

The Victoria's Secret fashion show taping is about a week away; a video of one of the casting calls has surfaced, and although some of the models have been named, speculation roils about who else will make the final cut. [Fashionologie]

Women's Wear Daily has been doing all kinds of things to celebrate its centennial this year, not the least of which was publishing a special collectible edition, which hit newsstands Nov 1. On Tuesday night, WWD had its official anniversary party in New York, attended by almost every designer in town, models, socialites and even Henry and Nancy Kissinger. [WWD]

Book Marc, one of the latest concepts by always inventive designer Marc Jacobs, has taken over the old Marc by Marc Jacobs Accessories space on Melrose in Los Angeles. The transformation was lightning quick and probably inspired by the success of Book Marc's initial store, which opened in New York in September. The shop offers an upscale mix of readable material, such as coffee table design tomes, out-of-print and limited editions and poetry, along with Marc Jacobs' branded book bags and other paraphernalia. [Mondette]

Chronicling Lady Gaga's funky, freaky fashion

Ladygaga Lady Gaga has been queen of the music industry for what feels like a mere minute, but she's already the subject of a few books — the latest one, "Lady Gaga: Critical Mass Fashion," hones in on the superstar's fashion predilections and partnerships.

Written by journalist Lizzy Goodman in small, chatty chapters with elongated captions detailing some of Gaga's wildest ensembles, the 144-page full-color book incorporates quotes from Gaga about her style — mostly gleaned from other media sources (she was clearly not in on the creation of the book).

Borrowed quotes include, "One day I said to my creative team, 'Gaultier did bows, let's do it in a new way,'" she told New York magazine. "We were going back and forth with ideas and then I said" — she snaps her fingers — "'hair bow.' It never cost a penny, and it looked so brilliant."

Now-iconic looks from Gaga captured in the book include the orbit-inspired Armani Prive dress she wore to the 2010 Grammy Awards; the Our Lady of Guadalupe costume comprised of a red lace bodysuit and sunrays made of hair; the bloody bejeweled bikini-ish getup she wore to perform at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards; and the newsprint catsuit she wore for a live show in Sydney, Australia.

Chapters are divided by sartorial themes — there's one dedicated to Gaga's pants-lessness, others on her kooky sunglasses (make that sunglass helmets) and out-there hats.

That the book feels quickly cobbled together to capitalize on Gaga mania hardly matters; for the Lady's diehard fans, it's a fabulous memento of the performer's initial ascent.

Mick Rock talks about shooting Bowie, Lady Gaga and why he's collaborating with John Varvatos

Photo On Saturday (Oct. 2), legendary rock ’n’ roll photographer Mick Rock turned the Santa Monica Bloomingdale’s men’s department into a backstage lounge.

Rock, who launched his career in the early ’70s shooting Ziggy Stardust-era David Bowie, flew out from New York to christen the John Varvatos shop in Bloomies by shooting portraits of shoppers who shelled out more than $250 on Varvatos jeans and Converse sneakers. Rock was also promoting his latest book, “Mick Rock: Exposed,” signing copies for customers.

In a nearly four-decade career, Rock has shot music icons ranging from Lou Reed and Iggy Pop to Madonna, Bono and Lady Gaga. He also dabbles in fashion and has shot Kate Moss, so he’s more than cool with partnering with designer Varvatos. “People say why are you doing this?” he says. “One, John [Varvatos] is a friend of mine. Two, he crossed my palm with some silver. And three, I got a bunch of free clothes.”

Rock chatted with All the Rage, while getting ready for his close-ups.

You've worked with David Bowie since Ziggy Stardust -- in the days before musicians had stylists.
David is much more than music and it always was with him. He was long, long ahead of everybody. He was so prescient. He had influence on all kinds of things like makeup on women – Ziggy Stardust makeup.

Who else did you enjoy working with?
Debbie Harry. In her prime, she was extraordinary -- there’s nobody -- all due respect to Madonna and Lady Gaga.

Kate Moss?
I shot her raw and rock ’n’ roll for V magazine. It was Johnny Rotten meets Debbie Harry.
She’s smart. There’s an old English phrase: There’s no flies on Kate Moss.

What’s the difference between rock ’n’ roll and fashion photography?
Rock ’n’ roll is an attitude. Even though I get people in incredible clothes, it's a lesser concern than the personality.

[In "Mick Rock: Exposed," we look at a suave Bryan Ferry wearing a tropical khaki suit] This is great men’s style.
That was in Holland Park, London, in 1975. Ferry's "our man in Havana" look.

Lady Gaga?
She has an echo of Ziggy Stardust in there. She’s musically talented. It’s a mistake to trivialize her because there’s been so much of it.

[We look at a picture of Ronnie Spector flashing her underwear]
There's Ronnie Spector in her knickers. I might not have published that if she were wearing a thong. It wasn’t about gettng a cheap thrill.

What bands do you enjoy shooting now?
I love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I love the KiIllers. ... I love the Scissor Sisters.

Which of your portraits is John Varvatos' favorite?
Syd Barrett [Pink Floyd's tragic founding member, who passed away in 2006].

Your morning fashion and beauty report: Katy Perry spoofs 'Sesame Street' flap. Lady Gaga good for Armani. Miranda Kerr dazzles at Milan Fashion Week.

Katy

Katy Perry was on "Saturday Night Live" over the weekend, singing, of course, but also spoofing the tempest in a teapot over the low-cut top she wore on a "Sesame Street" taping that got her segment cut from that show after it showed up in advance on YouTube and led to parental complaints.  This time she wore a really low-cut Elmo T-shirt and played a children's library volunteer in trouble over her revealing clothing. She didn't say much; instead, she just let her tee and her costars do the talking. [Entertainment Weekly]

Gaga stylist, fond of red meat as fashion, to head Thierry Mugler

Rage_gaga
The Paris-based Thierry Mugler brand announced on Monday that Nicola Formichetti had been named creative director of its men’s and women’s ready-to-wear lines beginning with the fall-winter 2011-12 collections.

Formichetti, 33, is a consultant whose client list includes Japanese retailer Uniqlo and magazine Vogue Hommes Japan (he serves as fashion director of both), and a stylist whose celebrity clientele includes one known for her over-the-top ensembles -- Lady Gaga. (At his personal blog, Formichetti credited himself as stylist for Gaga's multiple-outfit VMA appearance Sunday night that included this "meat dress" by Franc Fernandez.)

Formichetti comes on board following the departure of Rosemary Rodriguez, who has served as artistic director at the fragrance and fashion brand since 2008, and according to a press release released Monday, his addition is part of a larger reshuffling at the French label that includes Sébastien Peigné as the head designer of the women's collections, and Romain Kremer as the head designer of men's.

Your morning fashion and beauty report: Lady Gaga's alleged alter ego, Christina Hendricks lands new gig and a model Nicky Hilton

Lady Gaga at the Grammys We'll be honest. We're mentioning Lady Gaga for two reasons, one of which is we're always looking for ways to attract more readers. It's also an excuse to recall her recent concert appearance in Los Angeles and the devotion of her fans. And there's Gaga news (of sorts): The chatter about her supposed alter ego, Jo Calderone, is building to a roar. [The Cut]

Hard to believe, but Georgia May Jagger (daughter of Jerry Hall and Mick) has a few thoughts about clothing and sharing said clothes. [Vogue UK]

Christina Hendricks has a new job. No, she hasn't abandoned "Mad Men." She's taken on the additional responsibility of starring in London Fog's fall 2010 ad campaign. [People]

Lady Gaga fans: dressed in their Gaga best

Lady gaga fans She’s worn plastic bubbles on her bod, red lace over her face and 10-inch Alexander McQueen armadillo clodhoppers on her feet. It seems Lady Gaga will wear anything. And so will her fans, who, on Wednesday, dressed in their Gaga best for the first of the Queen of Pop’s two shows at Staples Center.

The rifle-shooting bra, the can curl hairstyle, the poker face mirror mask. In just two years, the performer has become a fashion force with enough iconic looks to costume the entire cast of the TV show “Glee.” Inspired by David Bowie, Madonna, Grace Jones, Elton John and Freddy Mercury, she has brought individual style back to the music stage, and become a champion of nonconformity.

Many of Gaga’s outrageous looks can be attributed to her creative team, known as Haus of Gaga and compared to the artists in Andy Warhol’s Factory. But, following the success of her collaboration with Giorgio Armani on the Space Age Grammy dress, constructed of glittery rings that seemed to orbit around her, she tapped the designer to make some of the stage outfits for this tour.

On Wednesday, her fans, who seemed to range in age from 9 to about 70, showed up in hairstyles in every color of the rainbow--wigs and dye jobs in neon pink, neon yellow and platinum blond. There were Vegas showgirl-style headdresses, and all manner of customized sunglasses with crystals, cigarette butts, crossed pistols etc.

Lightning-bolt makeup was a trend, as were American flag outfits inspired by the "Telephone" video. The hair bow was a major theme--the bow made out of hair, that is. And so were spidery ripped leggings, bejeweled bustiers and the requisite claw-hand pose.

It was like Halloween in West Hollywood at midnight--in the best possible way. Click here for a photo gallery of more of Gaga's fans.
