Convergys Corporation has one of the largest sales forces in the United States. According to Selling Power magazine, which ranks the 500 largest sales teams in the country, the Cincinnati-based outsourcing company employs an estimated 40,000 salespeople in the U.S.

But what does it take to join its ranks? Strong financial skills and a proven track record are absolutely necessary, according to Ann Lazarus-Barnes, vice president of human resources for the firm.

FINS spoke with Lazarus-Barnes to find out what really impresses her when it comes to hiring for the company's sales force.

If You've Got It, Prove It

"What matters most to us is a proven track record of building lasting relationships and growing client business," said Lazarus-Barnes. "Familiarity with profit and loss contributions at Blue Chip companies, strong leadership skills are important, too."

Numbers Trump All

"Resumes should concentrate on results, particularly as they relate to sales," she said. Don't just list where you've worked, even if it includes top companies. "Claiming a year-over-year improvement in revenue capture is more compelling."

Get to Know Convergys

"It would also be important for a candidate to understand our financials," said Lazarus-Barnes. Before applying or interviewing, be sure to understand the company and its culture.

Don't Be Too Quick to Connect

"I recommend developing a personal relationship with someone before inviting them to connect on LinkedIn," said Lazarus-Barnes. Instead, try connecting with the company's Twitter or Facebook feeds first.

Ace the Interviews

Lazarus-Barnes said that there is a combination of phone and in-person interviews, as well as custom assessment tools to check for competencies. Don't let your energy flag, no matter how long the process seems -- interviews can include meetings with senior-level executives, said Lazarus-Barnes.
