Superhero Boots and High Fashion

Wednesday April 27, 2011

Captain AmericaHas anybody noticed the fashion in boots lately? I wouldn't necessarily consider my self a fashionista by any stretch, but I swear I have seen more and more superhero boots everywhere I go. The main type I'm referring to is called a knee high boot with a fold over top. It looked like something even my favorite hero Captain America would wear as can be see in this picture. This doesn't even bring in the thigh high boots that are cropping up like we see Emma Frost from The X-Men or Ms. Marvel from The Avengers wearing. Now I'm not saying Cap is wearing women's boots. I just find it funny that some people have poked fun at the fashion of superheroes and yet now here they are, a part of mainstream fashion. Pretty good stuff, that is...if you are into womens boots.

Marvel and The Hero Initiative

Tuesday April 26, 2011

Josh Medor's Benefit PrintMarvel Comics and The Hero Initiative are teaming up to help an artist in need. Some of you remember Josh Medors, a man suffering with a rare form of cancer, and the benefits that have been put on to help him with his medical bills. His fight isn't over yet and neither are the benefits and ways in which we can help.

From the Press Release:

Artist Josh Medors continues to battle against a rare form of cancer in his spinal column. And Spider-Man's coming to help save the day.

The Hero Initiative in conjunction with Marvel Comics has created a limited edition print featuring Josh Medors' recreation of the classic Amazing Spider-Man #33 cover by Steve Ditko. Proceeds from sales of the print, available at Medors' hometown comic store, Packrat Comics of Hilliard, Ohio, will go directly to Josh to offset medical expenses.

Only 250 individually numbered prints will be available. Of these, 50 will be autographed by both Medors and Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee at $100 each. The remaining 200 will come autographed by Medors alone at $20 each. Prints will go on sale on Free Comic Book Day, May 7, 2011 at Packrat Comics, and will also be available at PackRatComics.com.

Medors created the artwork for the cover of issue #105 of Alter Ego magazine, on sale October 2011 from Two Morrows Publishing. "It's an honor to feature Josh's work on our issue about the Comics Code, which Spider-Man helped bring up to date in the early '70s," said Alter Ego editor Roy Thomas. "His reinterpretation of Ditko's original drawing literally took my breath away."

"Josh Medors is proof that you don't need a costume and super powers to be a hero," said Tim Dillon, Marvel Business Development Manager. "We're all inspired by his fight against cancer and glad to help support him by joining Hero Initiative on this limited edition print. "

Any way you can help will be greatly appreciated.

The New Ultimate Spider-Man

Monday April 25, 2011

The New Ultimate Spider-ManWith the death of Peter Parker in the Ultimate universe, it would seem that there is going to be a new person to pick up the mantle of Spider-Man.

From The Press Release:

"We called this story Death of Spider-Man for a reason," said Axel Alonso, Marvel Editor In Chief. "This is a huge story that'll have fans around the world talking for a long time as we set the stage for the debut of our new Spider-Man."

I've said it before, but the Ultimate universe frustrates me. There is a ton to like about the whole Ultimate line. They have put a lot of talent in charge of this Universe and there has been some top notch stories to come out of it. It was supposed to be a great place for new fans to jump in on, free from all the massive continuity that burdened the regular Marvel Universe. As time has gone on though, it has become just as bloated as its predecessor.

My biggest frustration with the Ultimate Universe is how Hollywood has jumped on it as the canon for the Marvel Universe characters. Even current movies like Captain America and The Avengers are using a lot of the Ultimate Universe as their source material. In the end, moviegoers might not notice the difference, but fans like you and I do. I guess the hope is they take the best of both universes and combine it for a top notch film.

At any rate, I don't see the Ultimate Universe going away any time soon, even if the amount of comics in that realm has significantly shrunk. The funny thing is I bet there are people that grew up with just the Ultimate Spider-Man and view those comics as their canon, their continuity. I bet they feel as passionate about the Ultimate version as I do about the regular Marvel one and would hate for it to be cancelled. Guess a fan can't win in this day and age.

Green Lantern Movie Gallery Updated

Sunday April 24, 2011

Green LanternMan this summer is going to be just about epic when it comes to all the comic book movies. Not ones that many would not think were comic book movies like Red, The Surrogates, or The Losers. No, these are straight up without a doubt bona fide comic book superhero movies like Thor, Captain America, and Green Lantern. I'm a very excited comic book fan for sure.

Images for the Green Lantern movie keep trickling in and on the one hand I'm excited and on the other...not so much. The images from Oa and the Green Lantern Corps look great to me and are really setting the stage for making this a great start to the franchise. Some might have played it safe by keeping the action on Earth, but I'm stoked to see this play out in space and on the planet Oa.

Other pics have me not so excited. This picture showing Hal Jordan wielding a gatling gun just seems a bit out of place. Jordan's use of his power ring are not usually so complicated in nature, but rather a bit on the simple side. It might be a small thing, but I hope it does mean that there will not be a further divergence from the source material. What about you Green Lantern fans? Anything got your worried or are you raring to go for this incarnation of mightiest Green Lantern of all?
