No Happily Ever After

Thursday November 4, 2010

Randy TravisThings seem to be falling apart in the country music matrimony department lately with the announcement of two high profile divorces.

Randy Travis quietly finalized his divorce from wife-manager Elizabeth last Friday. The couple had been married since 1991, though they'd had a professional relationship since the 1970s. An earlier statement did note that Elizabeth would continue to manage Randy.

Also breaking things off recently are Billy Ray Cyrus and his wife Tish. After 17 years of marriage and 5 children (including Disney pop sensation Miley Cyrus), the couple filed papers last week citing irreconcilable differences.

It's times like these that make someone want to turn to country music -- some anti-love or drinking songs, perhaps?

Taylor Swift Unveils New Song at VMAs

Tuesday September 14, 2010

Taylor Swift at MTV VMAs 2010Taylor Swift didn't win any awards at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night, but she managed to make headlines anyway with her performance of a new song off her upcoming album Speak Now.

The song included lyrics like "Thirty-two and still growing up now. Who you are is not what you did," which definitely seem to be directed right at Kanye West, who infamously hijacked her acceptance speech at last year's ceremony. The entire performance could certainly be seen as her way of addressing the controversy one final time and moving on.

See her performance for yourself.

Taylor Swift's third studio album, Speak Now, is due to be released on October 25.

Country Sitcom Coming Soon

Friday August 13, 2010

Reba TV ShowCMT is dipping its foot into the sitcom pool with the announcement of its first scripted comedy, Working Class. The show is due to premiere in January 2011 and will star actress and comedian Melissa Peterman.

The show is said to be a family-friendly affair centered on the life of a single mom with a blue collar background who moves her family to a rich neighborhood. Can she give them a better life but retain her country swagger? Only time will tell.

Peterman is best known for playing Barbra Jean on the TV show Reba (pictured), which ran from 2001-2007, and currently also works as the host of CMT's The Singing Bee. Earlier this year, she signed a deal with Big Machine Records to release her first comedy album.

Gwyneth Paltrow: Country Singer?

Monday August 2, 2010

Gwyneth PaltrowLooks like actress Gwyneth Paltrow may be getting more than she originally bargained for when she signed up to play a country singer in the upcoming movie Country Strong -- she may actually have a bonafide country hit on her hands.

The film isn't due out until December, so consider this your sneak preview that Paltrow's voice, previously heard singing alongside Huey Lewis on the 2000 cover of "Crusin'," can also handle country. The single sounds primed and ready to saddle up alongside the rest of the country pop on the radio today.

Take a listen to the movie's title track and see for yourself. The film also stars Tim McGraw as her manager husband.
