Berlin Back in Fashion

Wednesday May 11, 2011

Which cities come to mind when you think of fashion? Paris, Milan, New York? Well, it's time to put Berlin on the map of the international fashion world. With its creative street fashion and an ever growing number of young designers, the German capital now hosts big international fashion fairs like the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week or the Bread and Butter; a couple of years ago, Berlin has been awarded with the title "City of Design" by the Unesco.

Berlin is home to nine fashion schools - more than any other European city - and some of the most talked-about young designers will make it to the US next week to present their latest collection. If you want to see what's cool in Berlin these days, head to the Berlin Runway Fashion Show in Los Angeles, which is organized by the Los Angeles-Berlin Sister City Committee and Checkpoint Charlie Stiftung Berlin. The show features the  four up-and coming designers Karolina Preis, Georg Lux, Monya Wasilewski, and Jasmin Erbas. from Berlin's fashion school college Lette Verein Berlin.

Top Things to Do in Nuremberg

Monday May 9, 2011

The 950-year old city of Nuremberg (Nürnberg) is Bavaria's second largest city and alive with history - from the Imperial Castle, which was the residence of Germany's Kaiser and kings, the romantic Old Town with its original timber-framed buildings, to Albrecht Dürer's home, and the Nazi Rally Party Grounds. And during the holidays, the Nuremberg becomes a winter wonderland when the city celebrates its atmospheric Christkindlmarkt, one of the country's best Christmas markets.

Check out this photo gallery for the highlights of Nuremberg that no traveler should miss - from history buffs, and art lovers, to culinary travelers, and romantics.

Happy Birthday Hamburg!

Friday May 6, 2011

This weekend, the city of Hamburg throws a three-day birthday bash to celebrate the 822nd anniversary of its harbor. The festival kicks off on Friday, May 6th, and takes place along the pier called St. Pauli Landungsbruecken right at the harbor. Local food, drinks, and many special events on land and water, including dragon boat races and a tugboat ballet make this a great festival for the whole family.

Rhine in Flames 2011

Wednesday May 4, 2011

See the Rhine's natural beauty in a whole new light. During the festival "Rhine in Flames" on May 7, 2011, thousands of Bengal lights will illuminate the landscape of the Rhine valley; firework displays will bathe river, vineyards, and medieval castles in a magic glow.  You can watch this spectacle along the Rhine promenade in Bonn - or get real close and board one of the illuminated Rhine ships that parade down the river that night.

The spectacle takes place on various weekends between May and September 2011:

  • Bonn: May 7
  • Ruedesheim-Bingen: July 2
  • Spay-Koblenz: August 13
  • Oberwesel: September 10
  • St Goar-St. Goarshausen: September 20

Check out the festival website Rhine in Flames for more info.
