Monday April 25, 2011

In case you haven't heard (seriously?), the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton will take place this Friday, April 29. Unless you plan on being in the London area that day, you'll surely be one of the millions of folks with their misty eyes glued to the television as this historic event unfolds.

A few local bars are hosting viewing parties and festivities leading up to this royal event. This Tuesday and Wednesday (April 26-27), Sherlock's, Baker's St. Pub and Watson's House of Ales will be hosting royal trivia games during happy hour. And all day Friday, April 29, these venues will run wedding-day coverage and hand out free wedding cupcakes with every entrée purchase. Think you and your date are William and Kate doppelgangers? Stick around until 10 p.m. and compete in the "Royal Look-Alike Contest" where the winners will receive a $25 gift card, a crown and a tiara.

For you morning people, Ouisie's Table is holding a viewing party that begins with live pre-wedding coverage at 7 a.m. Admission is $25 and includes a tasty spread of Eggs Benedict, pastries, champagne and more.

Lights Out Houston

Thursday April 21, 2011

In conjunction with the upcoming Earth Day, Houstonians are urged to participate in Lights Out, a city-wide agreement to turn off all public building lights when not in use. If the wee hours of the night have ever found you driving through downtown Houston, you've no doubt wondered why on earth so many people are working at 3 a.m. The truth is, many of these workers left their places of business long before dark and simply failed to turn their off their lights. This unnecessary energy usage costs our city nearly $1 million each year.

Today, Mayor Annise Parker is inviting Houstonians to do their part in reducing the city's energy usage by turning of their lights when at all possible throughout the day, especially upon leaving their jobs for the day.
