There's a harrowing moment when you return from vacation. You probably dread this moment before you even leave for your trip: the opening of your email inbox when you return to work. Here are 3 strategies to ease you back in:
- Sort by Subject Delete every email except the newest, begin at the bottom and start reading. I like to jot down notes along the way of any questions I have. Often they are answered as the email thread goes along, but if they aren't, I have a place to begin my reply.
- Sort by Person Scan by name and start with the most important person first, whether that is your boss, you're bosses boss or most likely, your most important client.
- Use the Phone Call or flag down your boss and ask "Before I go through my Inbox, is there anything urgent I should start with?" Chances are the most pressing issue the first day you were out on vacation is not as pressing on your return.
