And even more snow photos…

4:17 pm, Feb 27th, 2011 Written by Dan Evans burbank news regional Add a Comment

I have to say, I’m very much impressed that people are continuing to send in their snow photos. Of course, the last time it snowed in the Media City, Dwight Eisenhower was president, there were 48 states, and Johnny Carson could but only dream of making fun of “beautiful downtown Burbank.” So, it’s kinda a big deal. In any event, here’s the latest submission, thanks to Julie Horowitz. If you would like your own shots online, shoot me an email: dan.evans@latimes.com.

FIT FOR LIFE: En garde!

1:29 pm, Feb 27th, 2011 Written by Mary Catherine Holcomb voices of the 818 Add a Comment

Ever wondered how Peter Pan and Zorro fought off those pesky bad guys with those fancy sword moves? Well no need to wonder anymore because after my first lesson at Sword Play Studios, I’m ready to dish out some moves.

OK, not quite. But sword master Tim Weske did teach me some techniques, which of course, I couldn’t grasp. And during our “fencing” session, he literally shoved his chest forward for me to “stab” him.

Let me rewind for a second because I’m sure you’re wondering how I managed to find my way into a fencing studio. … Continue Reading

NEW GUY IN TOWN: Coffee! Coffee! Coffee! Coffee!

1:13 pm, Feb 27th, 2011 Written by Bryan Mahoney burbank voices of the 818 Add a Comment

A couple weeks back I asked about locating the best coffee in Burbank. I’m looking for an actual café to provide me the sweet nectar of the bean; no chains or diners or donut shops (perhaps on another day trip). Priscilla’s came up a few times, as did a couple other locations in the 818.

So join me on my odyssey to finding the best cup of joe this side of the Tropic of Cancer.

Snow. In Burbank?

6:57 pm, Feb 26th, 2011 Written by Dan Evans burbank news regional Add a Comment

Joe Mohos wasn’t surprised when he saw rain coming down Saturday afternoon. The Burbank resident said he was a bit more surprised, though, when the rain, already heavy, turned to hail and then — could it be? — to snow.

“Why is everything white?” he said, recalling what was going through his head.

The lifelong Media City resident said this was the first time he’d ever seen snow fall in his hometown. Not wanting to have his kids miss out, he bundled up Cathy, 7, and Chris, 8, and hustled them to the nearby Chandler Bikeway. With Cathy outfitted in her dad’s gloves, the trio made a small snowman, heading back home as the sun set and the temperature dipped even lower.

NEW GUY IN TOWN: Let me explain about this white stuff you’re seeing

6:28 pm, Feb 26th, 2011 Written by Bryan Mahoney burbank voices of the 818 Add a Comment

OK, people – calm down. It’s going to be OK.

Over on Twitter and in some coffee shops around town everyone’s tweaking out over the “snow” they’re seeing in Burbank today. I realize it’s a meteorological phenomenon akin to scientists discovering water on Mars, so allow me to shine some light on what you’re seeing:

SLEET: Think of this like if a bunch of raindrops got cold and formed boy bands, and gravity is like their fans. They ride the wave of support from their fans (gravity,) but eventually they hit a wall like old age or, in the case of sleet, the ground, and have to split up.

HAIL: Heavier than sleet, hail is made of tiny ice chunks. They can look like the crushed ice of a margarita.

SNOW: I actually didn’t see any real snow today, though plenty of hail and sleet. Snow is much lighter and fluffier, and won’t puncture holes in your car like hail or make the roads as slick as sleet.

If you’d like to see some real snow, I’ll introduce you to my brother and sister-in-law. Here’s their house near Boston:

What real snow looks like

If this snow doesn't stop soon, Burbank might look like this!

FIT FOR LIFE: Hummus heaven

7:56 am, Feb 26th, 2011 Written by Mary Catherine Holcomb voices of the 818 Add a Comment

As we struggled to breathe and attempted to get out of our seats, we knew we found a gem.  My fellow food comatose friend, Lauren uttered: “I’m having a hummus baby.”

It was another successful outing at the Hummus King in Burbank.

Since I’m on this kick of searching out new fitness centers, I realized that the same should be done with exploring healthy eating places.

Obviously, you can’t go five feet without stumbling across a “Vegetarian Delight” or an “Organic Heaven” out here in health- conscious southern California. But hitting the health food jackpot may be a bit harder especially when it comes to finding quality food at affordable prices. … Continue Reading

THE CROSBY CHRONICLES: Trust in the classroom

THE CROSBY CHRONICLES: Customer service? I don’t think so

Written by Brian Crosby on Feb 23rd, 2011 at 10:00 am

With so many people buying things online, it’s amazing to me that retailers haven’t strengthened their customer service. After all, why should I spend more money at a store unless I’m treated with respect and skill. If the employee has neither of these traits, I’m better off buying items at my keyboard. Last weekend we [...]

NEW GUY IN TOWN: On the plight of pleasantly parking politely

Written by Bryan Mahoney on Feb 23rd, 2011 at 9:25 am

This month, Burbank voted to increase parking ticket fees to make up for a new $3 processing charge imposed by Los Angeles County. It doesn’t cover street sweeping tickets, which are a different kind of racket entirely. I recently lived near Boston, where the months of November through April create a warzone on the streets.
