2008: Clinton Would “Obliterate” Iran In Response To Nuclear Attack on Israel

April 22nd, 2008 by Matt

In a Good Morning America interview Tuesday, Hillary Clinton struck a decidedly forceful tone responding to a question on a hypothetical Iranian nuclear attack on Israel, saying, “I want the Iranians to know that if I’m the president, we will attack Iran…In the next ten years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them.”  This follows recent remarks from Clinton promising “massive retaliation” in the event of an attack on Israel.  Clinton aide Howard Wolfson clarified that the senator was not implying the use of nuclear weapons.

Matt Yglesias and Ilan Goldenberg were both confused about how this can mean anything other than using nukes.

The National Iranian American Council denounced Clinton’s remarks, saying they would contribute to further prolonging our conflict with Iran rather than moving toward resolving it.
