35th Anniversary Supplement

Of kings and diplomacy

MICHEL COUSINS | ARAB NEWS
As with any country, so much of the history of Saudi Arabia has been the history of its leaders. Arab News first appeared just a month after the assassination of King Faisal and two months later, on June 19, 1975, the paper led with the news that the regicide had been beheaded in front of a 6,000-strong crowd in Riyadh the previous day.

‘Arab News: Mother of all SRMG publications'

TURKI AL-FAISAL
Former Saudi Ambassador to the US & UK
During and after the 10th of Ramadan 1393H (Oct. 6, 1973) war between the Arabs and Israel, it was noticed that there was no English newspaper in Saudi Arabia to express the views in the Kingdom in a style that was both civilized and readable for English-speaking people. This issue was discussed in a meeting between the late Sheikh Kamal Adham, chairman of the foreign communications office, Hisham Ali Hafiz (a colleague in the office) and myself, then deputy chairman of the office.

EKMELEDDIN IHSANOGLU

It provides me with a general perspective on current events and issues at the local, regional and international levels.

Happy birthday, Arab News: Keep on campaigning!

ROBERT LACEY
Writer, script consultant
I wasn’t there for the birth, but I do remember when the little green newspaper was a slender and feisty four-year-old. It was 1979 and I had just arrived in Jeddah with my family. We wanted to know the times of the prayer calls that day.

An institution that groomed interns

JOHN DUKE ANTHONY

I have been an avid reader of Arab News during practically the entire time since it began until the present. While countless editorials and articles from Arab newspapers have enhanced my knowledge and understanding of Saudi Arabia and Arab culture and society over the years, I am proud to say that the ones appearing in Arab News, from which I have derived great benefit, outnumber the rest.

‘Keep up the good work’

PABLO BRAVO
Spanish ambassador to Saudi Arabia
On July 30, 1983, Arab News wrote an article about me entitled "After fruitful two-year stay, Spanish Charge d'Affairs leaves" in which my picture was included. The article was written by Suresh Shah and it contained some of my thoughts about my time at the Spanish Embassy, then in Jeddah. Although the color of Arab News was green, as it is today, and green is the color of hope in Spain, the clipping I have kept has taken on a melancholic grey color, to match the hair I have now!

Ever since King Abdul Aziz Al-Saud established the Kingdom in 1932, Saudi leaders have given top priority to the development of the Two Holy Mosques and the cities that house them and to expanding facilities for the guests of God who come for Haj and Umrah from around the world.
