Egyptian Cabinet shuffled for first time in post-Mubarak era
|
Several new ministers were sworn in Tuesday in Egypt in the first Cabinet reshuffle since a military council took power, state television announced.
The Cabinet was expected to hold its first meeting Wednesday.
Twelve ministers were replaced, including the oil, culture, health and trade portfolios, while a post of deputy prime minister was created. The new Cabinet lineup, however, included three members from the recently ended Hosni Mubarak era, including Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq, who was named by Mubarak shortly before he stepped down Feb. 11.
The retention of the three was immediately decried by the youth groups behind the recent uprising that unseated Mubarak and was likely to fuel fears that the former president is continuing to influence the country's policies from behind the scenes, the Associated Press reported.
Mubarak is believed to be in seclusion in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheik and he remains president of his party, the National Democratic Party.
The new ministers were sworn in before Field Marshall Hussein Tantawi, the head of a military council which has ruled Egypt since Mubarak was ousted.
