Recently Marine Corps Major General Robert E. Schmidle Jr., a second-year student in the Doctor of Liberal Studies program at Georgetown University, was Senate-confirmed as a Lieutenant General in the United States Marine Corps.

Associate Dean of Graduate Liberal Studies Anthony Tambasco noted, "We enthusiastically congratulate Lieutenant General Schmidle on his appointment. His significant achievement highlights the quality of our students and their commitment to scholarship, even as they balance a full life beyond the classroom.

Upon confirmation, Lieutenant General Schmidle began serving as Deputy Commander of U.S. Cyber Command in Ft. Meade, Maryland. As Deputy Commander, he directs the forces and daily activities of U.S. Cyber Command and coordinates the computer network attack and computer network defense missions of the U.S. Department of Defense.

Previously, Lieutenant General Schmidle's command assignments included Commanding General of First Marine Aircraft Wing, Commanding Officer of Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force (Experimental), and Commanding Officer of Marine Fighter/Attack Squadrons 251 and 115. Previous operational assignments included multiple tours flying F-4 and F/A-18 aircraft, as well as serving as the Operations Officer and Air Officer of the First Battalion 9th Marines.

Lieutenant General Schmidle is a native of Newtown, Connecticut. He graduated from Drew University with a Bachelor of Arts in History. He holds a Master of Arts in philosophy from American University, and is currently working on his doctorate at Georgetown University. He is a distinguished graduate and prior faculty member of the Marine Corps Command and Staff College as well as a distinguished graduate of the Marine Corps War College. He has published on a range of topics from military history to social psychology and philosophy. Because of his published works, Lieutenant General Schmidle was asked by the London School of Economics to be a featured speaker at its upcoming Beyond Rationality III: Resistance and the Practice of Rationality workshop on November 19 and 20. The themes for this workshop involve the linking of the issue of the limits of rationality with the concept of "resistance." Schmidle also presented a paper at the Beyond Rationality II workshop held in July 2010.
