Publishers & Content Providers

The JSTOR collections have been developed through the participation of many publishers and other organizations. These content providers have licensed scholarly publications to us or have provided print artifacts or digital files to include in the archive. The new Current Scholarship Program provides broad global exposure for current journal content and provides scalable technology that supports the innovative publication and use of digital content. Participating publishers include university presses, commercial publishers, scholarly and professional societies, university departments, independent organizations, museums, and libraries. Today, JSTOR works with over 700 publishers from more than 25 countries. Through collaboration with libraries, archives, museums, herbaria, and other members of the scholarly community, we are also adding a broader range of content to JSTOR.

Our approach to developing the archival journal collections has been to select titles for inclusion.  This approach is driven by the need to establish priorities among the vast number of journals published around the world and to devote limited resources to those journals that most closely fit our mission.  In selecting titles, we consider the following criteria:

  • historical significance of the title
  • recommendations from scholars and librarians
  • citation analysis
  • number of institutional subscribers around the world
  • relevance to a scholarly audience

We apply a similar set of criteria to other content types and special collections. Please contact JSTOR Content Development to submit a journal for consideration.

Programs & Services

Today, over 700 publishers have chosen to participate in JSTOR, including scholarly societies, university presses, independent publishing houses, and commercial enterprises. We consider our relationships with these organizations to be partnerships, and we hope that our aims – to preserve scholarly material and to advance research and teaching – will resonate with publishers from across the scholarly community. This page highlights the programs and services we currently offer to publishers that we hope enhance the value of their participation in JSTOR.

JSTOR is invaluable.  Its holdings are expansive, and the quality of the content and images are fantastic.  Scholarship and research in the history of art would be unimaginable without it.
