Democracy Congratulates UN Ambassador-Designate Susan Rice
Democracy: A Journal of Ideas congratulates Susan Rice, a member of its Editorial Committee, for her appointment today to be United States Ambassador to the United Nations. Rice has been a member of Democracy’s Editorial Committee since the journal’s inception in 2006.
In addition to Rice, other thinkers and writers involved with the journal have taken an active role in the planning of the new administration. Christopher Edley, a member of the journal’s Editorial Committee, is serving on the transition’s Advisory Board. Democracy contributors Derek Chollet, Ivo Daalder, Michele Flournoy, Reed Hundt,Jonathan Moreno, Shirley Sagawa, Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall and Gayle Smith are also playing key roles in the transition process. Indeed, the Philadelphia Inquirer recently noted that “one way to guess what Obama might do” as president is to look to Democracy, and the Christian Science Monitor called Democracy the place where “the Democratic Party is being reimagined.”

On the July 18 edition of ABC’s “World News Tonight,” senior White House correspondent Jake Tapper interviewed Elizabeth Warren about the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which begins operations this week, and cited the Democracy essay in which she first introduced the idea for the agency.

On July 18, the Brookings Institution hosted a debate between Doug Kendall, president of the Constitutional Accountability Center, and University of Chicago law professor Geoffrey Stone on how progressives should interpret the Constitution. The discussion, which was co-hosted by Democracy editorial chairman E.J. Dionne, built on their exchange in our newest issue.

On June 30, Democracy hosted “Responding to the Jobs Crisis: A Progressive Entrepreneurship Agenda,” a symposium that focused on the need for progressive entrepreneurship in today’s tough economy.
