Is the Next Great Awakening at Hand?

The First Great Awakening led after many years to the American and Jeffersonian Revolutions.

The Second Great Awakening led, after many years, to the Civil War and Abolition.

The Third Great Awakening led, after setbacks, to the Populist and then Progressive Movements.

The Fourth Great Awakening led to the New Deal.

The Fifth Great Awakening led to the second Reconstruction, the Great Society, Feminism, and social upheavals.

Is The Sixth Great Awakening now due? What quarter will it come from? Read Mason Gaffney’s extraordinary history and predictions.

Predilections, 1/1/11
By GARY CORSERI

1.
Half of what I know, I do not know—
And half the time I don’t know
Which is which.

Truth is a bandit, Truth is a screech-owl
And the polar winds are howling.

Solar flares and the weather vane cuckoo,
We click out a mordant Morse Code
About Liberty, and God, and our free will.

2.
Baby boomers are booming out;
We’ll peter away with a whimper.

With money to burn, we burned it all
While California-dreaming.
Now we’re beggars in our children’s houses.

(Except for the rapists selected to lead us,
Grinning from ear to ear,
Serrating our warbling throats.)

3.
70 million in two world wars
Went to their graves mis-believing.

They died for rumors of rumors of war,
Allegations of allegations,
Cloth banners in the charnel house of hate,
While the power and glory mongers
Pulled the grenade pins, raked in the dough,
Built bone temples of severed limbs
In which we continue to worship.

4.
A savage race, a servile kind,
shaken by hysterias.

The barn is on fire.
The horses are screaming.

A Spider and the Journalist in the Cave
by CHARLES ORLOSKI

A “mothafucka” reporter,
maybe in his late twenties, roaring twenties,
octagonal Depp blue eyes, stubble beard,
chained neck, cracked Lennon glasses --
he was counting on just fifty years more war,
until retirement, and just like Dick Cheney said,
he wanted to be free, “Bao Chi, Bao Chi!”
sixty-three, get on the cover of AARP.

The reporter descended the hole,
the one Saddam crawled-out, December '03,
but it was only tunnel-rat lore now –
all the styrofoam birds and armored liberators
just pass by, do not bother to report
what the mothafucka does down
in Saddam's goddamn empty hole.

A Sunni spider gave him a look,
came close, realized the reporter,
never been inside a catacomb mosque,
never heard a shepherd girl scream,
never heard the B-29 Wikileaks
rain down on the Land of Canaan.

The spider drew closer,
hung in the hole's only bright spot,
“where the rain gets in.”
The reporter,
taking his Whiteout Milk nicely,
kept his mind from wandering,
tried to write, flipped a Bic through the cobweb,
and the spider understood –
the peace was broken.

North of the hole was the Sun, lonely virgins,
to the south –  shadow oil and a Coal man.
Was it a Danang-gang crime
for the spider's editors
to embed him in a place like this?
Knowing few things, the spider knew
it had a right to talk shit, misbehave,
sip Saddam's old WMD vodka, and wrote home:

Dear Editor:  I am a spider from Tikrit,
and in the shadows where I hang discreet,
I sit near a journalist from Pittsburgh.
Once, in a bugged interview, he stated that
most spiders were no good,
"and Assange & Manning spiders are the worst –
black widow moles.”
Does he really have the right to say this?
Shall I end his life with one soundbite?
Dear Editor: I hope you will print my story
on the world-wide-web,
and give your al-Gaga opinion,
'cause it's getting coffin-dark down here,
inside a cave with nothing to tell.

Charles Orloski lives in Taylor, Pennsylvania.  Employed in an industry where he occasionally gets to tear-down old factory buildings, vacant office space, Orloski has a sixth Master & Margarita sense that web-weaving spiders are trying to tell us something.   He can be reached at CCDJOrlov@aol.com.

RED'S GOLDEN BLUES
(Carmen’s Organ Fiesta)
by CATHERINE A. LEE

Wild night. Need I say more?
Hammond organ, traps, and sax,
threesome spreading auditory love

Deep bass done with footfalls
making liquid gravitation pull
through floorboards rumbles
vibrates thighbones
playing "Games"

What if every night could be this splendid?

Sure you intellectualize
diminished sevenths, turnarounds
but this real dealing
dancing daring saxman
shod in spats
plunges into heart and makes
us clap on one or three or
two, whatever
pleasure does not care
His pure drilling rhythm
Sparking grinning
barroom howling
Drummer pulsing sounding under
over in between and through that
stranger at the table over
thumping hard down foot in
time to organ's cries
telegraphing feeling
very like that other union pounding

What's your hall of shame? Half empty club
a handful of selective hearers
Those who couple add this spice to bedroom later
Single soul directly rides on Hammond clef:
B3 what's not to be
when dumb blue pill could scarcely match
their hot "Green Onions"
organ stimulation.

Catherine A. Lee first began exploring poetry as a percussive voice with jazz musicians at a loft performance space she organized in Boston, MA in 1978. Among her most successful performances were joint musical readings with her mentor, the late Ted Joans, in 1985-86. Trained in graphic design, and a former Pearson custom textbook project manager, Cathy is primarily self-published, creating altered artist chapbooks in signed, numbered, limited editions; We Free Kin is her first. Since rehoming to San Antonio, TX, Cathy has read often at jam sessions, SA Jazz Poet Society gatherings, and various music-less local readings. Because she believes working with carefully selected music amplifies her poetic content, Cathy has begun earnestly recording her ideas in collaboration with other creative souls (see http://www.vimeo.com/jazzovation). Reach her at jazzovation (a t) gmail.com. http://www.authorsden.com/jazzovation
