Open Society Foundations chairman and founder George Soros shares his latest thinking on economics and politics in a five-part lecture series recorded at Central European University, October 26-30, 2009. The lectures are the culmination of a lifetime of practical and philosophical reflection.

Soros discusses his general theory of reflexivity and its application to financial markets, providing insights into the recent financial crisis. The third and fourth lectures examine the concept of open society, which has guided Soros's global philanthropy, as well as the potential for conflict between capitalism and open society. The closing lecture focuses on the way ahead, examining the increasingly important economic and political role that China will play in the future.

I'm asking native English speaking guys (I'm Hungarian). Does George Soros have strong Hungarian accent according to you? It's just weird for me, cause he's been living in the USA since 1956, and from 1947 (17 years old) to 1956 he lived in the UK, so I really dont understand why he still has accent at all.

And on the other hand search for "Andrea Osvart on Craig Ferguson". That girl has perfect American pronunciation while he spent there very few time...

Having been a Soros fan for many years, I have to say that lecture struck me as one of his finest hours. Possibly because it echoes so much of my own thinking ... but I'm pretty sure this isn't just confirmation bias in action ;-) Watch it to the end, you will not regret it.

"The Agency problem has been extensively analysed by Economists but they look at it exclusively in terms of contracts and incentives, they largely disregard questions of ethics and values. If you leave the ethical consideration out the problem becomes pretty well intractable. Values like honesty and integrity lose their grip on people's behaviour and they become increasingly motivated by economic incentives. By claiming to be value free market fundamentalism has undermined moral value".

    Wow..

Unfortunately the individualism that we prize so much has atomized this society. We want individual freedom at any expense forgetting that we are after all social creatures and need to live in healthy and nurturing communities. What this extreme form of individualism gives us is the freedom to be separate, lonely and alone. People with power and money are then able to take advantage of us. If our agents knew that we lived in strong communities they could not treat us like this,

The death of Capitalism in America started with WWI. Since then we have had cronie Capitalism which is also known as Communism in China. All we have now is a ruling class and industrialists, which together pupetier our society to believe that we cannot do without either, which was never more apparent then in the 2008 Bailouts of Wall Street/GE/GM. I'll give your book a read, but as I said, Capitalism has been dead for 80 years.

This agency argument is so terrible...he does not discuss punishing the Agent for violating its agency responsibity. Allowing the agent to be protected is the basis of socialist/communist institutions supported by bribes and chronism. The success of America and free market capitalism is supposed to allow these agents to fail and not bail them out. Our decline is defined by a movement to chronism from Capitalism. Remember that it was Clinton that lifted Glass Stegal which allows for chronism.
