Applying the Salt

Rep. Henry Waxman, master congressional investigator, happily rubs a little salt in Rep. Issa's wounds by stating the obvious: "He's not gotten off to a good start. And he's got to figure out how to make corrections in his own operation."

And a Leader Will Walk Among Us

The big question about ex-Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) is whether he wants to be president or simply break into the high-concept MTV music video editing world. He's out now with a new edition in his series of campaign videos in the emerging style we might call Pawlentyist Realism. Check it out.

Just Weird and Icky

This is a totally Washington story, incestuous, double-dealing, perhaps a much bigger story lurking behind the firing. And the firing is top House GOP investigator Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) having to fire his own chief deputy and spokesman Kurt Bardella over some weirdness with emails and Politico. Give it a read. You'll learn a lot how the town operates, though some of it will probably be between the lines. At least for now.

Not Wearing Well At All

More poll data -- the standoff is hurting Gov. Walker a lot. His position just isn't popular with the state's residents. And they overwhelmingly disagree with him on the collective bargaining issue.

Here We Go Again

It's tough playing along with Newt Gingrich's quadrennial flirtation with a run for President. He's the Harold Stassen of the pre-primary season. But for the record Newt is expected to soon set up an exploratory committee for 2012.

Brushes with Greatness

I mentioned once before here that back in early 2004 the press person for a little-known state senator from Illinois named Barack Obama emailed me at TPM and asked if I could meet with the senator when he was next in DC. Because I always have my finger on the pulse of American politics and can magically sense what's coming next over the horizon, I never got back to them. I don't really remember whether I blew it off or simply forgot to get back to them. And as those who know me well can probably attest, it's often very difficult to distinguish the two.

But now it turns out I missed the boat on another brush with greatness.
