Freedom House Joins Call for US Action in Libya

In an open letter to President Obama, Freedom House joined a bi-partisan group of forty-one former U.S. government officials, human rights and democracy advocates, and foreign policy experts to express serious concern regarding the ongoing crisis in Libya, and urging the president, in conjunction with NATO allies, to take action to end the violence being propagated by the regime of Muammar al-Qaddafi.

Civil Society Dialogue with Secretary Clinton

On February 16, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton hosted a Strategic Dialogue with Civil Society. Sherif Mansour of Freedom House was one of the few participants invited to speak during the public portion of the event, providing input on the importance of U.S. support for civil society, support that was conspicuously absent during recent events in Egypt. Representatives from more than 20 countries as well as senior Administration officials physically participated in the dialogue, while interactive video connected participants from 50 embassies around the world.

Protests throughout the Middle East have spread to Oman in what marks the third day of protests in the country. Protesters are calling for political reform and additional jobs to boost the economy. Omanis looted and set fire to the Lulu Hypermarket during protests in Sohar, while riot police have reportedly used tear gas and rubber bullets against protesters. At least one death has been confirmed in Sunday’s clashes.
The entire Libyan delegation to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva resigned on February 25, in a protest against the harsh crackdown of the al-Qadaffi regime against citizens. The announcement was made during a special session held on the situation in Libya, in which the UN Human Rights body considered suspending Libyan membership.
The Nigerian parliament has finally passed a Freedom of Information bill after nearly 11 years of legislative gridlock. The law will allow citizens to access all records from public institutions, or from private organizations when they are providing public services. Members of the government deliberately denying such right could face up until 3 years prison.
The lifting of Algeria’s 19-year-old emergency law has officially taken effect after the repeal was announced by Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika earlier in the week. The lift is considered a an attempt by the government to respond to the demands of opposition groups for reform and to quell popular discontent.
