UN Rights Council Adopts Recommendations on Egypt: Government must ensure prompt implementation and reconsider rejected recommendations

Following the adoption of the UN Human Rights Council’s recommendations on Egypt, the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) welcomed the fact that the government decided to accept the majority of the recommendations, including many that are related to the worst abuses committed by the government.

At UN Rights Council: No Adequate Review of Economic and Social Rights in Egypt

(19 February 2010, Geneva) The UN review of Egypt's rights record has been overshadowed by the Egyptian government’s use of its diplomatic relations to limit a constructive debate, preventing real concerns from being raised while denying all human rights abuses. The Egyptian Government’s human rights record was reviewed by the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) under the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process on February 17th 2010.

Egypt Reviewed by UN Rights Council...Truth Emerges Despite Government Lies

Egypt’s human rights record was reviewed by the United Nations Human Rights Council yesterday            (17 February 2010). Egyptian human rights NGOs welcomed the inclusion of serious rights concerns and substantive recommendations to curb systemic abuses, including many that were presented by an independent NGO Coalition, were presented to the government by a number of states.

With Live Updates from Geneva: EIPR Participates at UN Rights Council’s Review of Egypt’s Rights Record

The United Nations Human Rights Council will hold a meeting tomorrow (17 February) to review human rights conditions in Egypt. This will be the first time that the HRC dedicates a session to discussing Egypt’s human rights record under its Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism, established in 2006 to assess the rights situations in all countries of the world.
