The lesser evil

THE heated debate within Canada over the exploitation of the country's lucrative but polluting tar sands is reflected among our readers, who were split on whether extracting their oil is worth the environmental costs. The drillers narrowly edged out the greens, by a slim margin of 54% to 46%.

For this week's Economist Asks poll, we turn to Mexican politics. Enrique Peña Nieto, the telegenic governor of the state of Mexico, is already considered the presumptive front-runner for the country's 2012 presidential election.
