A statement released today by the American University in Cairo and signed by AUC President Lisa Anderson, revealed that the university's Tahrir sq campus had been breached on January 28, the day that witnessed a massive attack on the protesters by police and thugs connected to the ruling National Democratic Party, resulting in tens of killed and wounded.

According to the AUC statement, two entrances of the campus, which was closed at the time, were breached, one by protesters and the other by the police. Fighting took place throughout the building, the statement said, including on the roof. Police apparently used the roof of the university building to fire at the protesters in the square. The statement said AUC had received a video "which appears to show uniformed individuals throwing objects from the roof of the building, including what are probably pieces of the cornice, and in several places they appear to be shooting firearms. The video is not clear, although it appears that at least some of the shots were fired toward the crowd of protesters below," said the statement, which also reported that spent shells and tear gas canisters had been found in and around the building.

The statement went on to assert that the presence of police forces on the campus was  "completely unauthorized, illegal and counter to all university policies and procedures".
