DARJEELING HILLS: Now, demand for a sovereign Gorkhaland

KOLKATA: Demand for a sovereign Gorkhaland instead of just a new Indian state called Gorkhaland? On Thursday, a statement issued by a new outfit Underground Liberation Association has raised this demand, further complicating the situation in the Hills.

ULA announced that they don’t consider Dajeeling as part of India and said the outfit will fight for a sovereign state of Gorkhaland.

M Thegeem, who signed the statement as the supreme commander of the outfit, claimed that the organisation was established in 2009.

The outfit questioned the sincerity of all the political parties active in the hills and warned them to stop all political activities in the Hills. “If anyone is found holding political programmes despite this reminder, he will face dire consequences,” stated the ULA statement.

The outfit also announced that it will begin its movement in a peaceful manner, but will take up arms if the government try to suppress the movement.

This perhaps is the first time that any outfit has raised the sovereignty demand in the Hills.

Earlier former employee of Central Industrial Security Force Ajay Dahal had launched an armed outfit Gorkha National Liberation Army as the armed wing of United Gorkha Revolutionary Front demanding statehood status of Darjeeling. Dahal was arrested in March this year from Sikkim and later was released on bail.

Senior police officers of the region have admitted that they are aware of the statement, but are still in dark about the outfit. ” The address mentioned in the statement is Munsong a village in Kalimpong. The place is known for its cinchona plantation and around 15 km from Kalimpong town. But we could not trace any activity of such an outfit there,” said Darjeeling SP D P Singh. “We are probing all possible aspects,” he added.

Like police and intelligence agencies, political parties are also confused over the development.

The GJM which was vocal with its statehood demand and now more or less satisfied with a proposed interim arrangement (Gorkhaland Regional Authority) believe that the “floating” of the outfit is politically motivated. “We are successfully moving towards our goal and this might be the handiwork of those who are not happy with the development. They want to create fresh trouble in the hills,” said Harka Bahadur Chhetri, central committee member of GJM.

The ABGL leadership in Kalimpong, however, are quite confused. “They have threatened all the parties. We don’t know who all are behind it,” said party leader Pratap Khati.

CPM state committee member Jibesh Sarkar said, “We just heard about the matter. I have no idea who they are.”

But the intelligence agencies could not ignore the incident by just branding it as a political mischief. They apparently have inputs that in the last month, a team from Nepal visited this area and met some local residents.

“The people who came from Nepal belong to the Limbu tribe, which is dominant in seven districts in Nepal and have considerable population in Kalimpong, Sikkim and Bhutan. A section of the tribe for long have been advocating for a separate Limbuwan land for Limbus,” said a senior intelligence officer. He said that the name of the “supreme commander” also suggest that he is a member of the Limbu tribe.

International Goru n JTM/Hillmantheconman/Lazy daisy; just relax. if this is handiwork of BOBBBC then this will peter out. If reports r true then in future we will see lots of firework. I am sure this is the work of few misguided youth who were expecting a g8 deal from GJMM but r now disappointed like most bloggers in HB.  (Quote)

  11. ZYX Says:

The Times of India found this news item worth publication with a detailed report. However, it fails time and again to publish many relevant news related to the Gorkhas. No wonder the Radia tapes have proved beyond doubt that media has been completely bought by politicians and the corporate world.

Perhaps the newspapers should put a price rate below each report at which the report was published.  (Quote)
