No one should brand Merkel and Sarko ignorrant. i ve been many times to Germany and quit frankly we have the same issues in Netherlands. Some turkish speak very bad in the language they live in (which usually is not the language they grow up in as thats mostly turkish) why is it always the turks which are badly integrated and non of the italian or croatian emigrants?

@Proletariet

as a dutch i am fairly well informed and exposed to German language and culture (which we share). I cannot see Mr zu Gutenberg to blame it on the left. He actually never blamed anyone but himself failing to correctly quote and mark things.

Schade, i am ivy league educated and i know the German universities very well too. The reason of their low rankings rather depend on different, yet other factors such as that the biggest and most important research institutes are NOT within the University but separate entities which work together with multiple Universities. See Fraunhofer (mp3) or Max Planck which are heavily interlinked with not just Universities. You cant compare apple and pears. German Universities are not marketed as brands such as Harvard is. After the big 8 an some other good colleges u have a lot of easy as hell universities in the States. Another key differentiator is the way US colleges encourage students to form and found new companies, just look around Cambridge,MA. Many Harvard and MIT student set up their companies there. All those things come together for rankings. Another factor is how many students apply and how many get denied. You cannot deny that the German system is working extremely well for the last hundred of years. Germany filled most patents in Europe and is the country which is targeted most by industrial espionage. Mr Wharton got his idea of an MBA after a visit in Dresden or Leipzig when he saw how trade and commerce was taught there. You really like your stereotyping dont you. all your comments on Germany are heavily biased and that gives one a certain idea of how sad a person you are.
Not sure if you re aware but new technologies like the GM Volt where developed solely in Germany. Specially German engineering education is world leading in its curriculum. put an Anglo Saxon and a Germany educated one in trial you will find out. Stop your German bashing, it really is too obvious.

oh and i forgot the irony and sarcasm in d first posting of Schadefreude... calling Germans stealing plagiarist with no creativity and rubbish schools... i guess someone has to find out who came up with those cars or machines and who shot the russians and americans to the moon.... i could go on about it but i guess his intention was to be ironic

Feb 22nd 2011 1:59 GMT

no prob frankfromStuttgart, i just got fed up and bored seeing always the same ilk lamenting and stating the same odd (false and stereotypical) bs about certain nations. i ve been exposed to Germans my whole life and have nothing bad to say since u find special people any country out there. Am just a bit worried that admins here do not tend to stop those trolls from spamming

Feb 22nd 2011 10:26 GMT

Schadefreunde, i dont know what the Germans did to u but it must mess around with your writing. Stop posting stuff in German if your command of such is based on some long gone memory. As far as i can see your account and experience of German educational institutions is non-existing. German 2nd level education outshines Anglo Saxon in many measures (we re not talking any irrelevant Pisa stuff here since they also account for non Gymnasium schools) In G u get Physics maths and so on as well as a foreign language education to a much higher standard thn Ol Blighty. Maths and a foreign language and 3 other HARD subjects (not like Drama or pottery/ Business )are mandatory in their Exams. Their idea ist not everyone is suitable to proceed to University thats why they have the lowest number of pupils pushing all the way from 1st year to finish in year 13with their Abitur.
U re just blindly spreading your garbage and grunge with Germany .

Feb 1st 2011 1:43 GMT

on a key note... most of the German foreign players are indeed German born players which only got the passport of their parental home country like the former Kovacs or Altintop brothers.

hm wonder if those authors ever ventured to Hungary... they hate Romanians specially cygarni..
and in regards of rudeness and arrogance.. the Austrian would be (sorry meant WIENERS) Europe's no 1.
anyways whats your matter with Russia? get over it islanders

Dec 17th 2010 8:54 GMT

As far as i remember the OECD said Germany is not educating enough academics. Well probably cause you dont study Beautician or Nursing at college level but apprentice level meaning...hands-on practice. They re more rigorous in who is granted into 3rd level education. Those people with apprenticeships are their backbone. the laborers their inventors and many enterprises were founded by people without any academic degree but a practical knowledge of their chosen field

Mr Junker also failed to recognize that if E bonds would be issued, his native Luxembourg would be better of as they dont need any new debts... Smart ass

Nov 26th 2010 10:56 GMT

Guys, Germanambassador aint german

Nov 18th 2010 11:54 GMT

As usual the misinformation of most posters here and the lack of properly translated German articles makes it hard to form a un-biased opinion.
Sarrazin does not condemn immigration but says more has to be done to make such part of the German society and accepting German cultural values as the ones being mainstream a country called Germany (as everywhere else in the world)
People which emigrated to America wanted to become Americans, people goin to europe wanted to be Muslims in Europe, not reflecting the same values but co-exist instead of being part of the society

@Gavin,

one wee question. Who is the bad guy? If you need money cause u didn t save enough (hence none) but want to buy something you actually cant afford and ask some bank from UK or d continent to help you out... who actually is at fault? the one which satisfies demand or the one has a demand he cannot satisfy by himself as he has not the financial base to do it?
Its too easy to blame anyone else but ourselves. We created that demand and if i look in the Saturday Indo i see tables of which banks/credit cards over the best AVR in return for u moving your debts to on their card, giving you a prospect of being able to spend money again (of course which is adding on top of the nasty pile already accumulated)
Its neither German nor anyone else s fault, its ours.Go to the Church pub or any other built with money from banks. The empty carcasses down on the LUAS to Sandyford never being occupied by tenants. We lied over our means and we have to face the bill.We re on the receiving end of benefits from the EU and same time using that money to build roads to no-mans land (or small ones to IKEA)while attracting investment with cheap taxes which could otherwise go to the continent where they pay the taxes which fed the irish tiger... biased the Irish are. Do what Bertie couldn t and face the truth, this is an Irish misdoing not a banking one

Oct 24th 2010 9:23 GMT

sorry but if u search long enough for the needle in that pile of hay, ull eventally find it...
i dont give a toss of some silly wannabe newspaper or "poll" i speak on account of people i know not about people which i dont know. go to germany in holiday season or any spermarket, u ll find plenty of yellow numberplates. germans also account for the most bi national marriages. must have a sad life. on a foot note. my brazilian colleagues thing we dutchies are more german then the germans. sayin we re rude and not tolerant but ignorrant. well everybody has to make his own picture but holidays and reading doenst give an account u ve to live and also master the language to give a valid account which none of the trolls here can

Oct 24th 2010 8:27 GMT

thanks again. so u say anything against your notion and u re either an enemy of the trolls or a exile German. Well i guess people get used to it here being scrutified and harrassed by ur ilk.
As i said, u post a commend and second later u get a recommendation. its so...well easy to spot. Anyway. Yes i know we re a bit too easy to come over by the nazis but well... they re organized quick and direct...drive thru Rotterdam and spot the difference to other cities. Basically nazi bombing helped them a lot to rethink their if our building style (narrow but long, utterly steep and narrow staicases) is such a good idea.
Oh and yes we had lots of collaborateurs like every other country too. Ok we re a bit too eager to over archive our quota regarding trains to Auschwitz but war is a special time and being calvinists we dealt with those collaborateurs our own dutchy way...as u like google soooo much look for mine field cleaners... i dont have anything against u or any european country. My wife is a lovely german french lady and i lived in 18 countries so far, next being china. But its just tooo obvious that its allways the same lot of people bashing Germany. Its not actually that ui guys have much influence since more and more people dont give a toss on economist blocks since u ilk around here in every usual article. Oh and btw. Schadefreude, i had German in school as nearly all of my fellow countrymen, i spent many lovely holidays and had a string of German girlfriends, i m not such a sad person as u, biased and boring with repeating myself. I also do not pretend to speak German like u misspselling every single word and have no idea about the german psyche. Germany is like Nederlande, a colorful place where people do not mind ur difference too muhc as long u show interest and respect the rule of the place. Have a look in statistics, After US and i guess Russia, its the second most diverse place with many people having a migration background.
u guys must have studied Gorings books on propaganda intesively

Oct 23rd 2010 10:39 GMT

of course i know hunger winter and oorlog winter. we have movies about it. anyway my family lived in a different part which wasnt cut off as the invasion took place in another. and yes famines happen in wars... ask the irish or berliners

Oct 23rd 2010 10:34 GMT

ah u 3 from the usual suspects group. i like the way u post something and immediately get 1 recommendation.... so sensible... i know now u target me with you rants too, but i ll keep it short. my dissapointment in the Economist board is final

Oct 23rd 2010 10:30 GMT

well u re both right but in fact, Quebec is the only department which is entirely french speaking and i officially out myself as a Poutine lover

Oct 23rd 2010 10:22 GMT

Kristallnacht is not to bring in relation with Multi Kulti show shame on. stop quoting in nazi propaganda speach and get over it. BTW the french idea of assimilation shows in recent riots and whenever u go to Marseille or greater Paris

Oct 23rd 2010 10:19 GMT

Marie, thats news to me, but telling u something...in most places on the continent, including the occupiers home turf. people where starving as men were dead, imprisoned or at war.
and no, we dutch drink belgian beers, german beers, or stuff like Hertog Jan or Grolsch. btw Budweiser is a sorta German beer with its foundes being Bavarians and Swabians as far as i remember
