Public opinion poll

Al-Ahram Weekly's 1994 poll of a random sample of 1050 Egyptians has been described as unprecedented in Egyptian journalism, in terms of reach and scientific rigour. Conducted in close cooperation with Dr Nader El-Fergany, director of Almishkat Centre and one of Egypt's top demographers and social scientists, the poll surveyed public opinion on major domestic and foreign policy subjects. Its findings on the political affiliations and/or inclinations of Egyptians came as a surprise to most observers. And no less interesting were the poll's findings on Egyptian attitudes towards Egyptian-Israeli relations and the peace process.

Yes to pluralism, no to violence
A first-of-its-kind public opinion poll conducted by Al-Ahram Weekly indicates an overwhelming rejection of Islamist violence and substantial support for the principle of political pluralism. It also shows that the "psychological barrier" with Israel is still in place, and that, nearly two decades after the introduction of a multi-party system, a sense of political ennui continues to prevail.
