Don’t try to control our lives, say Saudi women

By RIMA AL-MUKHTAR | ARAB NEWS

JEDDAH: Young Saudi women are calling for more freedom and liberty in their own country. On International Women’s Day, university students claim that women in Saudi Arabia need more independence because their daily life is filled with restrictions.

Arab News spoke to young Saudi women about their thoughts on the future.

“One of our simple rights is to be able to drive to college. I don’t understand why it’s prohibited for us to be in the driving seat,” said 22-year-old Zakeyya Ghulman. “I’m sick and tired of the driver being late and busy with all the work my family is giving him — dropping my mom off at the doctor,  picking up my sister from school. I keep waiting for him for hours.”

Traveling without a male guardian and having to wait for his approval creates problems for  20-year-old Kholoud Mamoon. “My parents are divorced. My mother is from Egypt, and she lives there. My problem is that every time I want to visit my mother I face a lot of resistance from my father before I finally get him to take me to see my mom,” she said. “I want to just pack my bags and book a flight for the weekend to visit my mom whenever I need to.”

Under Saudi law, women require their guardians’s permission to leave the country — either by escorting them to the airport and signing an exit waiver or by obtaining single-use or multiple-use permission forms that women keep with their passports.

Having the freedom to choose her future husband is what 25-year-old Amal Al-Ali really wants. “I come from a family that controls young women and does not give them the option to even choose their future,” she said. “Our generation is new and out there, we see and mix with men more than my mother and grandmother did when they were my age,” she said.

Amal added that her father decided when she was a baby that she was going to marry her cousin. While Islamic custom grants fathers the right to reject male suitors, it does not permit fathers to arrange marriages against the consent of their daughters. However, going against a father’s will can prove to be a formidable challenge for daughters and sons alike.

Some jobs and college studies are prohibited to Saudi women, especially if they’re perceived by parents to be inappropriate for women.

“I always wanted to study journalism, but my father was so against it that he controlled my high school certificate study, my college study; and I’m sure he will control my job options,” said 19-year-old Nora Al-Harthy. “His argument was that journalists have to mix with men in the office and talk to them by phone or even interview them. This act in our family is taboo.”

As for sports, stadiums are no-go zones for women — something that irks the Kingdom’s many female football fanatics. “This is nonsense,” said 20-year-old Mona Bokhary. “I have a passion for football and it doesn’t make sense that women are not allowed to watch football live and always have to watch it on big screens. I want to attend a football match and hear people cheering for their favorite team and feel the game. What’s the harm in that? Why isn’t it allowed for women to go there? Why not make women’s only sections at local stadiums?”

Are we born free? It is a big question mark what we call as freedom. If we believe that we are from Allah and we have to return to Him. In this case we are bounded by the laws of Allah. So we are not free. If we do not believe then we are atheist. An atheist is bound by social culture around him, for example he has to dress and cannot walk naked, he cannot have sex with his near ones, as restricted by social norms [I do not say by God as he is an atheist]
Humans are bound to have certain restrictions due to religion, culture, society, nature and ethics. So no one is free on this planet.

So no one is free to do anything they like to do, and they have to accept certain restrictions imposed by religion, society, government and culture.

I fail to understand why media is publishing such things. The atmosphere in the Kingdom is very peaceful and I dont think there is any problem for women. Newspapers should refrain from publishing such naive demands which are attempts to change the decent atmosphere and create disturbances in Saudi Arabia. The so called women's day and women's rights is nothing but to destroy and damage the dignity of women and just to uncover them in the name of freedom which is very bad and shameful.

To the women who wants to go and cheer for her favorite football team - Why do you wish to reduce yourself to a simpleton when you can be a higher class woman.
Does freedom mean you would like to trample upon Islamic law (Not Saudi Customs) to get your thrill of the day?

Why do women in Saudi Arabia think that they are not contributing to society unless they are working along side the men. You know taking care of a family is work too - that will be much appreciated when you find your child has been brought up to lead the country.

So drop this non sense that has plagued western women. I live and work in America and trust me most of the working women here would just love to take care of only their family. But the reality is someone has duped them into working outside 9-5 and then working again at home taking care of the kids.

It is Islam that gave rights to women long before the others. I am surprised that these "women's demands" come mostly from women in Saudi Arabia.Obviously they are not aware of the position of women prior to Islam. They have to read the Quran to know the position of women.Allah has guaranteed them their rights, but with this go obligations. You cannot take Islam "piecemeal"The present situation has arisen, because parents do not know, that a woman has the right to choose her spouse but of course, the parent as guardian has to give his approval. In the event of a parent denying this right, she can go to a judge who can listen to the case and adjudicate.
Now coming to husbands, they should also know that they have to treat their wives well and that she too has her rights, again obligations too.
If both men and women know the limits placed by Allah and fear him, there
need be no problem
"Getting married is easy.Staying married is more difficult.Staying happily
married for a lifetime, should rank among the fine arts." I am on fifty.
Some thing women should know;
"If you take a look at many societies today, a woman is only valued and considered important if she performs the functions of a man, (while at the same time displaying her feminine attractions to the public). While these women may carry the immense responsibility of bearing and rearing children, you have to admit that they may still be at par with men in nearly every area of life. The result is the present-day confusion concerning sex role differentiation, resulting in very large numbers of divorces and emotionally distraught children.

In Islam, however, the value and importance of women in society and the true measure of their success as human beings, is measured with completely different criteria: their fear of Allah (SWT) and obedience to Him, and fulfillment of the duties He has entrusted them with, particularly that of bearing, rearing and teaching children.

Nevertheless, Islam is a practical religion, and responds to human needs and life situations. Many women need, or wish, to work for various reasons. For example, they may possess a needed skill, such as a teacher or a doctor.

While Islam does not prohibit women working outside the home, it does stipulate that the following restrictions be followed to safeguard the dignity and honor of women and the purity and stability of the Islamic society, (the conduct of women, after all, is the "backbone" of any society):

1. Outside employment should not come before, or seriously interfere with her responsibilities as wife and mother.

2. Her work should not be a source of friction within the family, and the husband’s consent is required in order to eliminate later disagreements. If she is not married, she must have her guardian’s consent.

3. Her appearance, manner and tone of speech and overall behavior should follow Islamic guidelines. These include: restraining her glances in relation to any men near the work place, wearing correct Islamic dress, avoiding men, not walking in a provocative manner, and not using make-up or perfume in public.

4. Her job should not be one which causes moral corruption in society, or involve any prohibited trade or activity, affect her own religion, morals, dignity and good behavior, or subject her to temptations.

5. Her job should not be one which is mixing and associating with men.

6. A woman should try to seek employment in positions which require a woman’s special skills, or which relate to the needs of women and children, such as teaching, nursing other women, midwifery, medicine with specialization’s like pediatric or obstetrics-gynecology.

You know what's the problem with Saudi Arabian society? They mix religion with traditions... In fact, tradition is sometimes more powerful. I mean there isn't an Islamic role against women driving cars, even I remember the Saudi foreign minister in 2007 said in an interview with Channel 4 in the UK, that "there was no Saudi law prohibiting women from driving" he added "Its not a political issue, its a social issue".

Also, going to the staduim to cheer for the club you like or the national team is a normal thing. Other Muslim countries already have women seating zones in their staduims, its not a big deal.

There are a number of other issues, its just became a matter of how others would see her or perceive her and a matter of 'protecting is better than curing or solving the problem'... which is more than asking what women and girls want or need. If these issues won't be solved, I think things will get out of control and explode: lets face it, things are already changing under the table, we just pretend we don't see it and try covering it up.

I thank ALLAH every day for that. I am not sunni, not sufi nor shi'te. I am a muslim. In my workplace, I am surrounded by men but I have not flirt, make eyes or have any kind of illicit or unhealthy relations as ALLAH is my witness. In response to women should basically stay home, provide sex & breed, I dont know what to say to that & my muslim husband supports me in what I do cause he trust me & knows I am doing good & not bad things to hurt or harm people with my words or actions., & please dont equate culture & tradition with Islam or any religion. Most people in the world are much more educated than that. What I do , I only answer to ALLAH & ALLAH is the ALMIGHTY & the ONLY JUDGE that judge us, not anybody unless you are challenging GOD that you are doing a better job than him by judging others of what they should do & what they should be based on small minds, big egos & insecurities.
As for those who deem women are only a burden or a sex object, are you also insinuating your own mother. Perhaps one comes from stone. In Islam. utmost respect & regard is given to mother & the women that one insulted, oppressed, discredit or belittle will eventually become a mother.
as for the condemnation of western women...... they will likely be female soldiers waiting for instructions to save lives due to the unrest in the current middle east :P

Again, countless accusations of mis-treatment of women in the demonic West! Just how brain-washed are some of you people? Given the difference in populations, I think the saudi male should be far more ashamed of the prevalence of rape in his own country?

The Demonic West has a major problem preventing illegal immigrants from entering their territories. The EU countries in particular are the immigration targets of Muslims, Muslims who want a better life.

If Western women are so oppressed in their own countries, why are they not risking life and limb to illegally enter the 'female Utoipa' that is Saudi Arabia? In spite of the difficulties of life, that most people have to cope with, western women would never consider Saudi Arabia to be a dream destination. Remove the Western compounds, and the freedom women have there, and 99% of Western wives, here in Saudi, would be on the next flight home. I shouldn't imagine any would be quaking in fear of being raped when they got there.

Rima, you have written an excellent article. Any free-thinker would agree with the sentiments of the article, unfortunately, Saudi (male) society doesn't like free-thinking, as many of the comments prove.

It takes time to understand .Saudi can re- think and have the freedom given by probhet time.To understand and take the woman as a part of society ,Saudi should practice CO-education system at least up to the age of eight or nine. Islam can not agree with the western system. Muslim mother can not tell her daughter to take contraceptive or some other method in order to avoid illegal child . Islam say you get marry and have the relation . it does not agree have the sex and and then marry or leave her in street. Presently I do not think the social system is capable of giving permission to ladies to go whereever she likes. In some other countries like India , Pakisthan , Nepal the Husband or wife will not go without informing their life partner . First up all we should educate the woman then only we can expect a better society . She should know her responsibility. How to lok after the kids what should be taught them. How should behave with elder person. Father should ask consent before marriage , woman should have some union controlled by authority .

A true muslimah does not want to imitate men nor the non-muslim, she is content with all the blessings Allah swt has blessed her with, she throws this lowly worldly life behind her back and strives for the eternal life to come. There is in an authentic hadith of our beloved prophet Muhammad (sws) that any muslimah who observes the halal and the haram, obeys her husband (in good/lawful matters), fulfills the religious obligations and dies upon that state she may enter Jannah any gate she chooses. SubhanAllah!! this is true honour for muslim women. Our islamic history is a testimony how it values women. There is something called culture and a way of life called Islam. The two are different as the sun and the moon. So our sisters should reflect on what Allah swt is saying as we all are definatly returning to Him swt.

Do women have rights as per Shariah in KSA. And forget about driving etc, one law, which is in direct contrast to Islam. A Muslim women, despite the consent of her Wali, cannot marry a foreign Muslim man without permission of Govt (which is rarely granted). Where is Shariah in this, I think we have a newer Islam. Who is asking about the freedom of west Poor souls are asking for freedom as per Shariah!

I cannot believe some of the things being written here.

"The atmosphere in the Kingdom is very peaceful and I dont think there is any problem for women."

Of course it's peaceful- women are silenced by oppression, so it's not really a surprise none of the men are hearing women complaining.

"The so called women's day and women's rights is nothing but to destroy and damage the dignity of women and just to uncover them in the name of freedom which is very bad and shameful."

This is beyond nonsense. I can't believe there are men out there who think like this. Or rather, I don't WANT to believe it.

Seriously, open your eyes. Forcing women to cover to their heads, to be led around by guardians like children, to have no control over their own mobility- that is not protection, it is OPPRESSION. Since most of you condemning female equality here are not women and have no idea what it's like to be a woman in such a backwards system, I suggest you shut your mouths. You have no idea what you're talking about.

I deeply hope for the sake of all humanity that Poe's Law applies here, and all of these disgusting pathetic comments are trolls. If indeed you people actually mean the hateful things you say, I would urge you to think rationally- are women inferior to men? Are they less intelligent? Are they less able to drive and to cope with the responsibility of doing so? There is absolutely no evidence that any of these things are true, do you care about whether the things you believe are true or not? Or do you simply want to project your own fears and insecurities onto the way you treat other people? Have a bit of respect for your mothers, your sisters, your female friends (if you have any!).

Let us say! permission is granted to women to drive in KSA; then we should know what will happen; say for example in Jeddah the roads are already crowded and daily there is traffic-congestion/deadlock resultantly it takes hours in Jed city to reach destination. when women will be allowed to drive; the number of cars will be doubled on roads, consequently, more traffic-deadlocks/congestions; more accidents, more pollution etc. Moreover, where men are scared to drive and in case of accidents death ratio is very high; how women will manage to drive? Above all, from Islamic point of view we have to double check that whether it is allowed for women to drive or otherwise. Any inconvenience caused is highly regretted.

HANI, HAMID and like-minded should know and understand that it is not just a matter of driving permission for women, there are many evil intentions behind it, they are just becomining innocent and saying 'BOOK FAIR" "DRIVING" " FREEDOM" and so on. What kind of freedom they need ? What is their problem, ? in fact they dont have any problem . One wants to watch the football match and cheer in the stadium and others are complaining about their parents because they are telling them the truth and trying to save and protect them from evil, these women have failed to understand and just become tools in the hands of some so-called modern and broad minded, they are inciting and trying to mislead them in the name of women's right, freedom and so on.Any right thinking, sincere and wise lady will not involve herself in such activities. All these things are bad and shameful even if they have attractive and beautiful appearence, they should obey their parents and husbands and follow ancestors, respect the law of this holy land. On every step they should remember that they are women. No parent can see his daughter going astray, nobody can take place of parents, they are always wishing them well, they want to see them safe, happy and successfull.

Women and men have equal rights, a right t express their opinions. That is what Islam is. No one has any right to put people down based on their opinion.

Well, seeing the status of Saudi Arabian women, I can say that they are really unfortunate. Many women in the world takes big responsibilities, they can be anyone they wanted to be. They have a feeling that they are significant individuals to the society, not only as house wives, but as decision makers, strategists. They can actually do what men can do. Why could they not be given their own right to choose their own well-being. Let them grow on their own way.Let them share their ideals of making the society improve. They must not be deprived of their faculties. And ultimately, They might even out-perform men and well might have better contribution to Saudi Arabian development than the men.

Assalam Alaikum, I agree with the Idea behind in Mr. Awadh's Message. In parallel, we should also agree with the legal demands of women which is Islamic as well. Like, Marriage as per Consent if the person is Muslim, regarless of Nationality. Discourage Dowry, Help helpless women in finding food. Help those seek divorce rather than discouraging. Educate Husbands & device a mechanism to ensure women get its right. Bro! If divorce rate is increasing then there are some serious issues to be addressed.

ISMAEEL MARIKAR

Your endless supply of self-fabricated cobblers that you endeavor to espouse as fact is truly amazing.

"If a women feels she is being deprived of her rights she is free to "flee" from the oppressor......."

Really. So all you opressed ladies, out here in Saudi land, who feel that life in another country would offer you the freedoms that you desire, Ismaeel has the answer. Never mind that your 'guardian' refuses to give the permission you need, Ismaeel knows how to do it.

Come on Ismaeel, there must be thousands out there waiting to hear how to flee their oppresive guardian? Don't be shy now, let's hear it.

Or, were you, as per usual, just spouting unmitigated nonsense?

Islam HAS given women [ladies] their freedom as required but western world is adament on twisting morale issue and dress conduct. all for the sake of fashion fashion. Europe bans women from covering in public, but takes NO ACTION towards half naked womed walking the main town centre causing mayham. Their idea of freedom is take wome from home into work then from there desk top to table top and various other immoral venues.
plz plz ladies think B4 you destroy your own life & others as well.

If Saudi women are so childlike and incompetent that they cannot be trusted to choose their own clothes or drive themselves, why are they allowed to raise Saudi children? Aren't children too precious to be left in the care of such infants?

I wonder why you use an Anglican based name when, from your very poorly structured English, you are, quite obviously, not a native Anglophone? Is it so you can attempt to add, deceitful, credibility to your outrageous assertions, like the one below?

"Their idea of freedom is take wome from home into work then from there desk top to table top and various other immoral venues" (sic)

Which source of brain-washed bigotry did you take that from? It is hard work refuting the ludicrous accusations some of you idiots make against the West, but I feel it is necessary, because for every twisted moron, like you, there will be, several, others who, deprived of any meaningful education, will read your comment, and believe it. Thus, exponentially, increasing the number of brain-washed idiots.

To all of you, out there, who cannot distinguish the difference between the 'reality' of Western life and what you drool over in your own secret porn collection, start backing up your assertions with some sort of credible reference. That, or keep your fantasies to yourself.

You are like stuck records.

Dear Men, why are you all so scared of the fact to give a woman the right to drive? What is the worst case that can happen? That they will drive better than a man? Why are you afraid to give a woman the godgiven right to choose her husband? Are you afraid she will not choose YOU, are you really saticfied with the Idea that your wive never choosed you... that you choosed HER? Isn´t it a nicer thought, to have a woman beside you that choosed you too? Why are you afraid, to give the woman the right to travel by her self? Dont you have trust, are you afraid she will not come back? Why should she not come back, if she loves you and lives in a trustful relationship with you? The opposite, she will count the days to come back home. Why is all this fear? Dont hide behind the Koran. I love Islam, I love my religion, but I hate the fact, that men love to interpret the Koran and Hadith like they want. Our Prophet Peace be upon him, gave us long time ago the right to get education, to work and to make decisions.... this was that time. What rights would he give us today? Because he was a generous, loving and peacful man. Think about it men... there is nothing to fear about, aslong as your hearts are open, your trust is big and your faith in God strong.

First of all, embarrass!! Why would someone post such a topic in the main English news paper in Saudi Arabia. We want freedom.. Ladies? do u know what freedom means? if u looked the term before using it you would be embarrassed to post or even contribute in such topic. With freedom comes responsibility, and with responsibility comes order and regulations. I am sadden to say that there are a majority of youth in Saudi Arabia that lack both. Let’s start with making a single line in the banks before learning how to take a car and drive in a single line on the roads. Let’s learn how to be patients and wait for the drivers who are either taking mothers to doctor appointments or picking up siblings from schools before having the right to drive. Because with driving comes patients. If one just took a moment and thought about the overall responsibility of one’s life and the life of the person who is with you in the car or in the car next to you then you will take such matter seriously. One doesn’t really appreciate what they have until they lose it. In one point in time, I wanted to have the right to drive myself from point A to point B, so I got the opportunity to drive and let me tell you this I miss having a driver. I miss not worrying about parking and being late. I miss not worrying about driving in traffic and getting frustrated. So having a driver is luxury that one might take for granted. Lets fix the statistics of Saudi Arabia being one highest country in car accidents before allowing more drivers. But most of all it saddens me to see such topic emerging at this point of time. It is a critical time in the Middle East and all eyes are on Saudi Arabia anticipating whether they will follow the disturbance. Seriously guys, The King may God grant him health and strength he needs, he opened and gave us women a lot of opportunities in Saudi Arabia and this is how you thank him?? It saddens me!!! J.H.C
