Attackers armed with knives and machetes have clashed with pro-democracy demonstrators in Cairo.

The incident took place on Wednesday in Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the anti-government protests that led to the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak. Television video from the square shows the two sides throwing rocks at each other. News reports say at least two people were injured.

The unrest erupted after hundreds of pro-democracy activists had gathered for a rally in the square. The French News Agency (AFP) says one activist described the attackers as "pro-Mubarak thugs."

Meanwhile, Egyptian officials say the death toll from violent clashes on Tuesday between Muslims and Christians has risen to 13.

Officials say about 140 people were wounded in the unrest, which erupted during a demonstration in Cairo. At least 1,000 Christians had gathered to protest against the burning of a church in a Cairo suburb last week.

Witnesses say Christians and Muslims threw rocks at each other before riot police fired warning shots in an effort to break up the activists.

Egypt's military rulers promised Tuesday to rebuild the church and prosecute the Last week, Muslims set fire to a church following a conflict between two families, reportedly over a relationship between a Christian man and a Muslim woman.

Egypt's military rulers promised Tuesday to rebuild the church and prosecute the attackers. But Christians complain the military has been slow to move and reluctant to anger Muslims living in the community.

Even before Egypt's pro-democracy uprising, tensions had been growing between Christians and Muslims in the country.

And Muslims wonder why the United States might not welcome the folks who do this sort of thing?

09-03-2011 (USA)

This is a perfect example of how religion poisons society, causing people to kill each other over cherished myths of gods and creators. To quote Richard Dawkins..."Religion is about turning untested belief into unshakable truth through the power of institutions and the passage of time."

09-03-2011

If you haven't read the Koran you really don't understand the problem.

09-03-2011

the old regime has fueled the secterian tensions before. the ex interir.minister will be tried because he ordered the attack on the two saints church not long time ago. TO USA to my understanding the US welcomes all ethnicities and people from all religions. the US is not a christian state.

09-03-2011

But there is a planet full of hurting, lost, uneducated and undernourished people. We need to establish strict populations limits, move people (and keep them out) from regions where there is no clean water or where diseases like malaria are rampant, or areas we need to stay the way they are because they preform an important function for the planet like large jungles of vegetation that help scrub the air and replenish oxygen.

09-03-2011 (USA)

This simply highlights the extent to which Muslims in Egypt are not yet fully accepting towards Christians ... maybe the Muslim Brotherhood is still radical and alive?

09-03-2011 Kurt (USA)

That is interesting considering the fact that Richard Dawkins' beliefs are also untested. Yet this is still deplorable because there is no excuse for any human being to act this way. It boils down to self promotion which is the opposite of true Christianity. Jesus said, "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." Anything other than this is NOT Christian no matter what name or symbol one carries.

09-03-2011 (USA)

Religious or not, scholars are not interested in Dawkins' intellectually trivial arguments.

09-03-2011 wahid ibrahim (USA)

It is sad to know that humans killed each other in thousands,in the name of religions. Do gods ( whoever or whatever they are ) of these religions approve of those killings ?. Assuming the obvious negative, then why they do'nt stop it, if they are all powerful All religions teach us that gods can do anything.

09-03-2011 John (somewhere in middle east.)

This is a perfect example of barbaric nature of the so called islamic religion that poisoned societies for 14 centuries , causing death a d destruction unless you submit to their "religion". people in the west need to WAKE UP and realize the extreme danger this muslim terrorism ideology still poses to every still healthy culture.

09-03-2011 Bill (usa)

The pyramids, the museums and the Copt's are all about the glory of ancient Egypt. Trying to exterminate the Copt's is trying to exterminate a countries heritage. Religions come and go, heritage is an unmeasurable wealth. In North Africa and the Middle East, Christians are less than one percent of the population and this faith has not made or will make a dent to the Muslim faith. Egypt is trying now to join the world in freedom, but freedom is for all, not only the majority.

09-03-2011 Godwin (Nigeria)

People's belief should not be a thing of ridicule. Religious belief is one's right and should be held sacrosanct. If other beliefs do make trouble, all of them put together cannot equal 0.001% of troubles caused by muslims. If a US senator portrays Islamic danger to the world, some term it anything. But the truth is Islam is grossly intolerant of other beliefs, even though it itself is most fake and inferior when compared to other beliefs.

09-03-2011 Robert (Canada)

The Islamic God does approve of these killings of non Muslims. The rule in the Koran is; convert them to Islam, if they refuse, tax them, once they can not pay, kill them. The Koran is a hate crime, the west will not understand until it is too late. There is no such thing as 'radical or extreem Muslims', all practicing Muslims are not to be trusted...don't agree? read the Koran!

09-03-2011 ebrahim (south africa)

if the usa leave attacking islam there will be no problems, the americans are a lost race

09-03-2011 (U.S. of A.)

How much longer until the Tea Party starts treating our American Muslims like that. Hate is Hate and it all stinks the same. It's about time for us all to move past this petty tit for tat that has gone on for thousands of years.

09-03-2011 (Canada)

Take heed, U.S. and Canada, stop taking in immigrants from strange cultures (by that I means Islam). Where in the U.S. or Canada have you ever heard that Christians killed their daughter, burned a mosque and attacked the houses of Muslims because they involved in a relationship with their daughter?

09-03-2011

well duh. . Egypt has disposed a bad leader but they still have many problems. the military was in charge before the revolution and still is.

09-03-2011

Quoting whoever wrote, 'If you haven't read the Koran you really don't understand the problem." This is going to sound pessemistic, but without having to read either a bible or a the koran, where the hell did they get the idea that killing someone or burning a church is going to make them seem like a better person. I think your just crossing a line of ethics and morals.. -_-.

09-03-2011 civil unrest

The bible is just as violent and intolerant as the koran. Religion is just another excuse to justify killing someone who is different from you. Any christians/jews/muslims out there who are on a high horse need a reality check. Millions of people throughout history have been killed in the name of ALL THREE religions. They are all equally easy to manipulate into justifications for violence.

09-03-2011 Randall (USA)

Godwin, you are completely correct. All thoughts, ideas, and beliefs should stand on there own merit. The bible says "As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead." James 2 "To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless," Psalm 18

09-03-2011 visse (World)

Gay, straight, Christian, Jew, Democrat, Republican, banker, laborer, dark or light, we can all get testy. History has made us all equal. Purpose separates us, and decides our worth. Greed poisons society, not religion.

09-03-2011

thank you "civil unrest".....finally a person of intelligence speaks!

09-03-2011 Rebecca

A waffled way of saying the Christians were attacked by Muslims ~ again ~ and because they are not equal under the law ~ as it relates to the shari'a, which does not allow for equality between Muslim and non-Muslim ~ they do not enjoy the same protections as Muslims. - An Egyptian Christian is barred from serving as president - Only the president can grant permission to build a church and to repair one may take 8- 10 yrs to gain permission - Bahai children can't attend state schools

09-03-2011

Yes religion is poisonous and has turned people against each other before let us watch it do so again and again and again and say in god we trust.

09-03-2011 Chris (USA)

One thing that many people don't understand is that being is a Christian is not about religion but about a relationship with Jesus Christ. Do not judge how Christ is based on the actions of other people (including myself). Read what Christ says and do your best to follow him, not people.

09-03-2011 Alastair (Europe)

Civil Unrest, You can manipulate any religion. It is very easy when the religion calls for specific people to be killed. You know the justification can be extracted word for word from the Quran. Ask the foiled terrorists what motivated them. ISLAM! Islam is the most dangerous totalitarian Ideology any man created. You are either ignorant of historical fact, ignorant of religious duties placed upon Muslims by Quran and living in a bubble where they have no access to current world events.

09-03-2011 Corzair (UK)

The Prophets taught that our mission is not to kill each other! If people don't follow heavenly guidance then that is the peoples fault not religion! Only Satan and his followers is happy that people are killing each other Wake up people Wake up !

09-03-2011 CitizenSane (USA)

Godspeed Egyptian Christians, Godspeed.

09-03-2011 Kara (USA)

The christians and muslims should not be fighting amongst themselves, this a perfect time for them to band together and strengthen themselves to fight for democracy...they are just using the mobs as an excuse to fight amongst themselves its' pathetic! How can anything truly get done when they people are fighting amonst themselves and the government? They will fail in their plots if they do not band together in some way!

09-03-2011

"Where in the U.S. or Canada have you ever heard that Christians killed their daughter, burned a mosque and attacked the houses of Muslims because they involved in a relationship with their daughter?" Untold numbers of people have been killed by USA white Christians for exactly this offense, in America, in the name of their Lord. Blacks, hispanics, asians...

09-03-2011

2012 will soon come and everybody rest from all what's going on in the this planet.

09-03-2011 farah (egypt)

It wasn't "Muslims" who burned the church. It was one muslim who burned the church that set everything else on fire. Christians and Muslims protested against the church burning. The clashes erupted after some muslims were angered that the protests blocked the streets. Muslims are planning another protest to support the christians and to condemn what happened. I'm a muslim who joined the protest against the church burning

09-03-2011

Your Bible and Koran are just allegories; all you stpd fks that blindly follow a book instead of sending love and respect for your brothers and sisters are not only perverting your ignorance. To the smiling and waiting hell, which is your own creation, blind idiots will happily march.

09-03-2011

This is what the islamic religion gets you.

09-03-2011 Sam (Australia)

Regardless the issue, they need to learn how to argue without throwing stones. Maybe they're not worthy of democracy until they can learn that. Having said that, I tell you that Islam is a problem that nobody wants to recognise. It is a real problem. Muslims can be "corrected" (some of them don't need it)... but the religion as a whole has an arrogant tone that lends itself to intolerance. It is not the only religion with this problem. Face the truth people.

09-03-2011 mazra (USA)

In Matthew 22:39, Jesus reminds us to "Love your Neighbor as yourself." So Coptic Christians fighting Egyptian Muslims is simply wrong and is against Christian teachings. If someone burns down our church, the best plan for us as a Christian should be first to forgive those that trespassed against us and then quietly go to the task of rebuilding our church. But so often our anger takes over. So please do not attack the faith on the account of the believers that fall short. We all fall short.

09-03-2011 Proud Egyptian and Muslim (Egypt)

I wish the protest nonsense that is happening in Egypt these days could all end. These are not the people that had originally protested during the revolution that are protesting now. Rather, every group is exploiting this situation to make their personal demands. This is nonsense. Let the country rise first, then demand.

09-03-2011 Dana (USA)

..and pass the ammunition.

09-03-2011 Concerned (Canada)

The level of Islamaphobia on this board is distressing.

10-03-2011 Sam (Australia)

We're not afraid of Islam. We're aware of it's underlying intolerance to other religions.

10-03-2011 Mick

The only "true" religion is "Live and let live" People need to learn tolerance and to live together in peace.

10-03-2011

Did you forget the islamic empire? It ruled most of the known world for almost 1000 years or so with the quran and the sunnah of the prophet muhammed peace be upon him...hmmmm...there are churches here in egypt older than that and that were built during the islamic empire, synagogues and even hindu temples, buddhist temples etc. ( india was part of it) now if what you claim is true how do you explain that? You can't because your speaking from obstinate ignorrance.

10-03-2011 Alhamdu (Nigria)

Muslims are the same anywhere in the world, whether you are a believer in religion or not. There has never been a place where christians started any war tilk more of killing. Islam is the one that feels ahe is superior than all religions and must kill to prove it. Take away violence (of any kind) from Islam, and you'll see it crumble.

10-03-2011 Egyptian from (Egypt)

These attacks had nothing to do with religion. The previous regime doesnt accept being defeated so they are trying to destroy the revolution. Islam prohibits killing Christians, jews or even aesthets. I hope one day every one will know the truth of Islam. Islam is not about killing, its about love and life not death.

10-03-2011 Loving peace (Nigeria)

if islam is peaceful what are those; “Slay the unbelievers wherever you find them.” Sura 2( The Cow ):191 4. “When opportunity arises, kill the infidels wherever you catch them.” Sura 9( Al-Taubah) :5 5. “Any religion other than Islam is not acceptable.” Sura 3 ( Al-Imran ):85 8. “Punish the unbelievers with garments of fire, hooked iron rods, boiling water; melt their skin and bellies.” Sura 22( Al_Hajj ):19 that is just a sample because of the space limitation

10-03-2011 jgfggh (spain)

this is not good,,,all this is crazy peace

10-03-2011 Coptic (US)

As long as Islam exists, we will never see peace. Please people educate your self, and read the Quran so you can understand why muslims kill others. And for those who say that christianity teaches violence, give me a break!!!! Jesus has told us to love, feed, cloth, forgive, bless, and pray for our enmies. Give me another religion that tells you that!!!

10-03-2011 katrina.hdiaz (New Zealand)

Can you please tell me how do you identify the difference between a Muslim and a Christian out of crowds of 1,000's? Religion was put to the side through-out the Revolution. Both sides came together , they ate, slept and prayed in the same square without conflict. Stop blaming the Muslims for everything , Christians are just as guilty. Both sides fought together for a new Egypt. Let there be peace and stop the hatred. God belongs to no man, but Gods teachings are for all man.

10-03-2011 Sam (Australia)

You know what, just because you built a couple of synagogues and hindu temples doesn't make you tolerant. You only tolerate them so long as they cow-tail to you. Your religious arrogance stinks. Islam was created with an all-or-nothing stance towards everything in its path... therefore it will end up being nothing because of its inability to change and adapt to changing times. Who cannot adapt will perish. Get over it and grow a new identity that isn't based on ancient myths.

10-03-2011 Sam (Australia)

I reject God like he rejected me. I resent him like he resents me. I love him as much as he loves me. I will never worship anything other than myself.

11-03-2011 muslim (egypt)

the complete one:Sura 2( The Cow ):191 4.and for those who fought you because of your religion and expelled you from your homes kill them wherever you find them.Sura 9( Al-Taubah) :5 5 is the same way christians belive that no other religion than Christianity is acceptable, really trying to attack koran is futile, Islam was never about killing others.
