There is conflicting information coming out of Libya about who holds which areas along the desert frontline outside rebel-held Benghazi, as the opposition continues to urge the international community to move quicker on aiding its cause.

The opposition says its fighters have retaken the town of Brega, southwest of Benghazi, despite claims by Moammar Gadhafi's government that its forces hold the town and are advancing toward the rebels' eastern stronghold.

On Sunday,  the opposition announced a change in leadership in its military structure, putting Major Abdel Fiteh Younis in command of the rebel armed forces. Younis is the former head of Colonel Gadhafi’s special forces units. He reportedly has about 2,500 trained soldiers who defected with him in the early days of the uprising.

The announcement of his command coincides with what appears to be a tactical success in Brega, where opposition leaders say a trap ensnared government troops. If true, this indication of thoughtful planning would be a change from earlier in the uprising, when the rebels showed more enthusiasm than skill.

According to the opposition, the government soldiers captured in Brega are being well-treated in a Benghazi prison. Reporters' requests to see the prisoners were denied.

While the situation on the ground is confused and hard to confirm, rebel leaders are still calling on the international community to impose a no-fly zone so that they can regain the momentum and push towards Tripoli, hoping to overthrow the country's longtime leader.

With U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton holding talks in Paris about Libya before heading to Cairo, Libyan opposition spokesman Mustafa Gheriani says the message being given to Clinton in her meeting with an opposition delegation is clear.

"The message carried to Hillary Clinton is basically, please move-on on the no-fly zone, move-on on strategic bombing. Let’s end this before any blood is shed," Gheriani said.

In Monday's fighting, there are reports of some government bombs dropped on the opposition-held city of Ajdabiya, the last major hurdle before Benghazi.

The feeling here in Benghazi is that should government troops get to Ajdabiya, it will be a bitter and bloody fight.

Opposition members say before that happens, they hope the international community will act in time and stop the fighting.s.

One day notice on no fly zone. Drop a ton of flowers on Moamars residence. Crater the runways.

The choice is simple. Either some country or some union of countries airlifts a hundred shoulder-fired anti-tank weapons to Benghazi, or Gaddhafi will win militarily. If he wins, he will have to slaughter thousands to stay in power and will not hesitate to do so, while humanitarians wring their hands. Since the will to convey these weapons to the rebels does not exist, Gaddhafi will win.

A no fly zone and few bombs on Azziziya would make most of Libyans , lockerbie victims famlies very happy.

Why don't we just bump the bugger off, and save a lot of trouble. The UN and NATO are worse than useless, and the Arab League would never do the dirty deed themselves.

It's reported that a 2,000 man special forces unit fighting with the rebels recaptured Brega. That would cut off the supply line to Gaddafi's Eastern armored spearhead. It's also reported that the spearhead advanced with little infantry support, which means the night is not their friend. I wish the rebels every success in the evening's actions whether tonight or another.

America and its allies have enough cruise missiles to initiate a swift short surgical strike on the airfields and missile sites. This operation alone would make a difference to help turn the tide of battle. Military supplies such as armour piercing shells and even shoulder fired missiles would strenghten the opposition foces resolve for sure. The 'No Fly Zone' is fast becoming a spectators topic!

It is time for these countries' citizens to shed their own blood to establish what they can believe in. If foreign forces are the fighters, they will just be considered an occupying force within a week, especially if they are Christians fighting for Muslims.

When the United States wanted thier allies to back them up to go into Iraq and Afghanastan they asked for help and without question the allies supported this move. Now Libya is asking for help against the regime Ghadafi has hired menceries to fight his battle which is a cowardly act, its not a fair fight. If United States and other countries don't come forward and help Libya then the next time United States asks for help from the Allies it might not be a good response.

14-03-2011 Jason C. (USA)

The rebels wanted a fight looks like they got one. Do not get involved ,let them decide it.

14-03-2011 Tom K (Canada)

We have missiles that can reach the other side of the world, what is the trouble pressing a button and sending a missile to take out the nut job. Peace at last.

I don't understand why the West is dithering about the no fly zone....is it because we are afraid of the reaction of the other muslim countries? Or is it because we have a community organizer in the Whitehouse?

15-03-2011 kanuk (canada)

America should not get involved in the fighting in a muslim country any more, there are a good lesson to learn from their involvement in Somalia,Iraq and Afganistan.

15-03-2011 Pete (USA)

No Fly Zone. Now. Please

15-03-2011 Torontonian (canada)

why is everyone talking about support for the rebels in Libya? i have never heard any talk about the various groups in and outside America being supported for their causes. America can not be a cheerleader in every war around the globe.if a country has to deal with its internal conflict, let it deal with it in a way it has to..however, America hasn't been tried for all the war crimes it has committed against civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan and other places

15-03-2011 Sam (Australia)

@Genghis Khan, it is precisely that attitude that makes deems them "not ready" for democracy. Why empower people who see violence as their only liberator. Ever tried reading a book!

15-03-2011 Sam (Australia)

Violence and violent attitudes are a bigger problem than oppression of those who hold such attitudes. Work within the system. Read a new book every month and take a shower everyday for crying out loud. Get the basics right first.

15-03-2011 Bill (U.S.A)

Kaddafi is not stupid, he will not attack Pengazi's one million plus population. He knows casualties will be very high and will force foreign intervention. House to house fighting takes special troops that he does not have. Most likely he will just circle the city and wait them out or try to buy his way in.

15-03-2011 jaaranga (Canada)

I think it is time the world need to wake up to fight against dictators like gadafi . he was in power 41 yrs and bombarding his people and the world is watching that is strange . The protesters are fighting for their freedom . The world must help the civilian

By the time , opposition will be more regulated and armed in the meantime it will gain more supporters and aid which will help them to make tangible progress on the ground . Retake the town of Brega, southwest of Benghazi indicates how determinate and courageous the rebels are whereas they fight heavy weapon of Gaddafi by traditional old weapons .

15-03-2011 hamad part 2 of 2 (Oman)

No fly zone will expose the truth on the ground and who own the more loyalists and partisans . It seems that Libyans have already decided their fate and destiny and thing could deter them to reach their rights . It is remarkable sacrifice which Libyans youth provide for their essential legal rights .

15-03-2011 Merlin (USA)

NO AMERICAN MILITARY INVOLVEMENT IN LIBYA! Where's the Arab league with its modern air forces and huge armies? Tired, like many American's of being used and kicked by Arabs and Muslim's. The tyrants are theirs let them take them out. 195 countries in the UN; about 120+ have civil problems, tyrants, or military rule. All they need are some leaders with integrity, honor, and trustworthyness. What they get is their problem. We can't do it all.

15-03-2011 Dave (USA/California)

The freedom fighters need surface to air missles to down the planes and anti-tank missles. Knock out the fuel trucks in the rear at night as tanks have bad mileage and artillery must be re-supplied with shells.

15-03-2011

this is internal conflict Between government and Rebels how want to take power by forza

15-03-2011 Brisbane (Australia)

It looks like being left Britain and France. Both are keen to end the tide of African migration. I agree with Sam though. Have a bath and stop dragging your knuckles.

15-03-2011 Ivan Zimmer (USA (Living in Taiwan -Republic of China--not the PRC Chicoms))

Watch CNN, Al-Jazeera, BBC, Airirang! They all have reports of people begging for the free world to help them, and the free world is sitting on its hands mumbling and doing very little. By not helping the Libyans, we become hypocrites! We become traitors to our own espoused values! It seems the only people who have have any sense are the French!

15-03-2011 CHAKANETSA MAGUSHA (SOUTH AFRICA)

The Egyptian army should go into Lybia and kick this psychotic tyrant out like the Tanzanian army did to Idi Amin in 1979.How can we have a murderous lunatic in charge of a country in the 21st century?

15-03-2011 Hadit (Canada)

@Sam Do you sniff glue while you read or just when you write? Work through the system? Ya, some Germans under Hitler tried that "ONCE!" Also Russians, Chinese, Khmer, others, and now Libyans. Through the system works fine in an open society/government, but NOT AT ALL under tyranny. There is never any option, except armed, violent, deadly, insurrection.

15-03-2011 Krux (USA)

So, all of you Westerners think Libya is fighting for democracy. And you think America should provide a no fly zone! Why? Because we can? So can the Arab League or AU and they were created for that purpose. To handle African affairs. The death of any American in Libya is pointless. They haven't any concept of democracy. Shari'a is the law they impliment and it is in strict opposition to any form of democracy.

15-03-2011 Ami #1 (USA)

Shari'a is the enslavement of females, rape and abuse of 9 year old girls married to old men, no freedom of religion, press, speech, and no dignity, justice, or equality for Christians or othe non-Muslims. Christians need a special permit to build churches, then pay taxes which can be used to build mosques. Christians, on pain of death cannot seek to convert Muslim's.

15-03-2011 Ami #2 (USA)

Muslim's, however, can and do try to convert Christians. Christians cannot be elected to top positions in government, nor can they serve in the military. This is Shari'a which "purifies" Islam through Jihad and keeps Muslim's in the Dark Ages. Do you think Libya can establish any democracy at all? Even Turkey, Egypt, and Tunisia say Islam is the state religion.

15-03-2011 Sans (USA)

NOT ONE MORE AMERICAN TO DIE FOR MUSLIM IDEALS. PRESIDENT OBAMA AND US CONGRESS, GET THIS STRAIGHT; IF ONE AMERICAN DIES, IF IT COSTS AMERICA A LOT OF MONEY TO INSTITUTE A NO FLY ZONE, BEWARE ELECTIONS OF 2012! American's are tired of taking out Muslim tyranny only to hear chants of, "Death to America!" NO TO NO FLY ZONE; LET AU OR ARABS DO IT!

16-03-2011 Ivan Zimmer #1 (USA (Living in Taiwan -Republic of China--not the PRC Chicoms)

@Sam: Listen to Hadit! Read a history book and look to the future. @Sans: We don't fight for Muslim ideals! We fight for human ideals. Which is what the entire middle east is doing right as we speak. Why don't you go live in China or Libya or perhaps Saudi Arabia or even North Korea, then go back home and think about these issues. People in the middle east want their humanity. Consider what Ami above just mentioned. People like you undermine the very values you take for granted.

16-03-2011 Ivan Zimmer #2 (USA (Living in Taiwan -Republic of China--not the PRC Chicoms))

What Ami above just mentioned is what the people of the middle east are fighting against. When people can live free they most likely will respect the freedom of others.

16-03-2011 Ivan Zimmer #2 (USA (Living in Taiwan -Republic of China--not the PRC Chicoms))

@Krux: The Arab league is the the status quo that the people of the middle east are fighting against! The AU is usless. It is either our influence or China's! Take your pick. And by what you say you lack a concept of democracy yourself (but so do most people who throw around the term, China IS a democracy). So do you think they do not deserve their dignity and human rights?

16-03-2011 Popeye

Krux,Ami,and Sans I strongly agree with you. Some Arab nations have the best American and Russian weapons money coud buy let them use it to help their fellow Muslims. If the United States lend a hand to this,in the end most Muslims will call it American intervention on Muslim affairs.
