Workers Evacuated From Stricken Japan Nuclear Plant

A woman looks at a message board to check for evacuees in Rikuzentakata, northern Japan, Tuesday, March 15, 2011, four days after a powerful earthquake-triggered tsunami hit the country's east coast.
Japanese officials have suspended operations aimed at preventing a stricken nuclear plant from melting down, after a surge in radiation made it too dangerous for workers to remain there.
The chief government spokesman, Yukio Edano, told reporters that radiation levels at the quake-stricken Fukushima plant spiked at mid-morning. He said the remaining workers at the plant were evacuated to a safe area, because of the risk posed by the increased radiation.
Edano said levels have now receded somewhat, and that officials are monitoring them to determine when it would be safe to send the workers back into the plant.
Listen to Les Carpenter speak with VOA's Steve Herman, who is reporting from Koriyama in the disaster region in northern Japan.
Early Wednesday, what appeared to be white smoke was rising from one of the reactors at the plant, which was crippled by last week's devastating earthquake and resulting tsunami. Edano said officials were trying to determine the cause of the smoke, but that the most likely cause is steam escaping from a ruptured containment vessel in one of the reactors.
Japan's government is trying to avert a major nuclear disaster from the crippled plant. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from a 20-kilometer area around the facility.

Authorities also are rushing doctors and emergency supplies to thousands of people who have been left without food, water and shelter following the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Japan's NHK television on Tuesday quoted government officials as saying that 3,000 are confirmed dead, but more than 10,000 are missing and feared dead.
The scale of the triple disaster is enormous. U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs spokesperson Stephanie Bunker told VOA Tuesday she has not seen a disaster quite like this before.
Images from Japan
Television pictures from hard-hit Sendai show people lined up for water and canned food, and some stores rationing food sales to 10 items per person. In other areas, the 100,000 personnel deployed by the government are attempting to rescue survivors stranded by the flood waters and mountains of debris.
Rescue crews still are struggling through debris-blocked roads to get to hundreds of thousands of people whose towns and villages were leveled by Friday's earthquake and tsunami.
The government says 15,000 people have been rescued and 450,000 have been evacuated nationwide.
Poor japan.May the every thing turn into a bright way!

Still there is time to track back from our so called advance technologies and developments. We should respect and learn from the nature to live naturally to avoid these kind of disasters. We should only develop technology which is ecko freindly and in no case it should be dangerous for human kind.

A massive quake in 10,000 years will endanger the plant. It's like you know it's going to happen, but you are going to play Russian roulette and see who gets it.
There is absolutely no assurance that nuclear can be contained, and there is no study to see what the long term effect will be. Perhaps it will not be the nuclear war that ends us all, just simply the act of mother nature and the lack of foresight for those in the top or perhaps bottom, since we are the ones that voted them into power.

This photo saddens my heart deeply .The priority should be for children , women and elderly people to be evacuated immediately before the situation be complicated by other crisis . All scientist and specialists should think how to cope with this catastrophe wisely and urgently . It should be a way to re-cool the reactors instantly in order to remain the stability of the Nuclear plants for a while .

At a dose rate equivalent to 4,000 chest X-rays every hour one should call that what it is: terminal radiation poisoning. But everyone is trying to pretend it isn't happening. It is clear even with a full melt down few lives are at risk from these nukes. The costal construction of comunities poses a far greater risk to public health then does nuclear power. So if we are talking about a moritorium on nukes we need to have a much more serious talk about restrictining any developement along our coasts. If we are not willing to do this then the nuke moritorium is a joke.

My thoughts are there are a few things we can do : send prayers that suffering be diminished, give aid where possible, learn form this situation, dont put all our trust in technology or governments, be wise about how we generate energy and work with nature in future. develop safe energy options, wind farms , wave power.

Yes all this tragedy, the Mayan long calendar seems very accurate. I hope so, it would be nice to experience the Unity of Conciousness. In this very distructive time upon earth it provides hope that we are all evolving to the pinnacle of our evolution. My heart goes out to the people of (Queensland) Australia, (Christchurch) New Zealand and most recent and severely hit Japan. I am sure in our hearts and minds we all know that something had to give.

If you indeed believe in a God this is definitely counts as "an act of god". You are asking the entity that caused the destruction and the death to help and save or even take pity in any way the same group of people that he acted upon. Japan doesn't need your prayers or your god. They need lead blankets, iodine, and a few thousand years before the radiation levels render the place livable again. Use your brain, maybe it will grow. Or glow if your close enough to the reactor.

The bible says Luke 21:11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.

Why do some these people commenting invoke God and asking God for favors? If he or she exists, then that person should be summoned for questioning for such uncalled for vandalism on a peaceful nation. Forget the God, the Japan is a strong nation and they will overcome this. Human problems can only be solved by humans.

i concur with Gujrati Indian, nuclear power plants were never "totally safe" we need to garner power for natural SAFE resources. BUT big money backs nuclear power, pays your politicians to advance their greedy agenda and bottom line, which amounts to filling their pockets and mortgaging our future, and your children's future. dont allow this to take place, please contact your senators and congressmen and voice your opinions vigorously!

I feel so badly for Japanese people and their suffering. The nuclear crisis shows that man is foolish if he thinks he can control something so dangerous as a nuclear reactor. We need to be humble and recognize the power of nature is bigger than we can control, and no amount of careful design is going to keep the world free of nuclear accidents. We need safe and renewable energy solutions for the world, and we need to move away from nuclear.

This should make Iran think twice about what they are getting themselves into when they set up nuclear reactors for peaceful purposes (as Japan facilities are only emitting dangerous beta-emissions so far (X-rays)
Gamma-emissions are common from weapons-grade nuclear material zapping everyone at 300x Hiroshima and leave only shadows in the pavement.
Is that what the al-Quran wants?
Iranians and religious leaders really should be thinking their nuclear desires through, IMO.

There should not be any hesitation by Japan to adopt suggestions from abroad. Sometimes an ordinary person may suggest ideas which experts cannot think of to control the radiation crisis. Some studies have been conducted that rural cow dung has anti-radiation properties but in absence of proper infrastructure, studies remains incomplete. May God give them strength, wisdom and solutions to get over this radiation crisis.

How to help. 1. Use less electricity. Turn off appliances; watch less TV; replace older electronics; cook less; etc. 2. Produce your own electricity. Anything from a simple solar cooker to heat water to a full blown solar system for your home. 3. Demand that your elected representatives commit to switching from dangerous sources of energy to renewable ones. Make it clear that this is not negotiable if they want your support. Japan should be a wake-up call for us all. Will we listen?

The nuclear industry says that a meltdown like this is not possible in the U.S. because we have a sufficient number of back up systems. I bet the Japanese technicians believed the same thing. Anti-nuke groups have been saying it all along, no system is completely fail safe and the consequences of a nuclear disaster are to hideous to risk.

I pray that the Japanese people are spared any further tragedy. It is inspiring to see how honorably the citizens of Japan behave in the face of such disaster. Truly, the people of Japan must be among the most highly cultured and civilized folk on this planet. An inspiration and to be looked up to.It is still fresh in my how the folks in my country reacted so barbaric to hurricane Katrina, not near the magnitude of Japans disaster.Japan ,you are to be admired. the number of the victims who died from the tsunami and quake is much higher than that of those who will be killed or potentially injured by the leakage. I believe our government will address the leakage issue in a right manner immediately and hope this leakage won't lead to the extreme argument that we don't need atomic energy anymore. because we take advantages from the power. we should take trade-off risks as long as we benefit from using the power.

I am wondering why they would pull the only workers left who are attempting to gain some kind of control over these reactors, in all reality they have probably already been exposed to fatal amounts of radiation. Are they planning to send in new workers? Is some one else planning to take over efforts of this "meltdown" disaster? This is no longer a country hit with natural devastation, if those 6 reactors "meltdown" the impact will be global...

With as much technology as exists for military strategy etc, couldn't a robotic or remote controlled device drop the coolant to avoid further human loss? This disaster is so heartbreaking - and difficult to understand. First reaction - must be love, compassion, blessings and support to the people of Japan and to Japan itself. Peace, blessings and healing upon them all. May good prevail in this dark hour. Maybe the next reaction - is repulsion at the evil of nuclear technology. May nuclear technology be perceived for what it truly is - a vicious danger to our greatest gift from God - Mother Earth.
