The crisis at Japan's earthquake-stricken nuclear plant is deepening, with radiation emissions rising Wednesday to levels that forced authorities to temporarily evacuate the last technicians from the facility.

National television showed pictures of helicopters being prepared to drop water onto the Fukushima power plant's damaged number 3 reactor, in a desperate attempt to lower temperatures and prevent the nuclear fuel rods inside from melting down.

But NHK Television said the military aborted the plan after another helicopter flew over the plant to monitor radiation readings. Chief cabinet secretary Yukio Edano said new preparations were under way late Wednesday to begin injecting water into the crippled reactor from the ground.

New fire erupts

Japanese awoke Wednesday to televised photos of a new fire at Fukushima's number 4 reactor, where a two-hour blaze on Tuesday released a plume of radiation that was detected as far away as Tokyo, 240 kilometers to the south. The new fire died down after a half-hour, and was soon replaced by clouds of white smoke pouring out of the number 3 unit.

At a press conference in Tokyo, Edano said the smoke was probably steam escaping from a rupture in the containment chamber housing the unit's nuclear core. Officials announced a similar rupture in the chamber of the number 2 unit a day earlier.

Danger forces evacuation

Edano said the skeleton crew of about 50 workers still struggling to pump seawater onto the fuel rods at all six of the plant's reactors had been removed from the plant for their safety, but that radiation levels appeared to be dropping by midday. He said later that monitoring showed radiation levels within 30 kilometers of the plant were not so high as to pose a threat to human health.

Even when they are not in use, the nuclear fuel rods remain very hot for weeks or months. Unless they are kept cool with a steady supply of water, their outer casings can melt away releasing radiation into the air.

At units 1, 2 and 3, the rods are inside thick concrete containment chambers designed to hold in any radiation, even if the rods melt down. But officials say the chambers surrounding units 2 and 3 have now been cracked, allowing radiation to escape.

Explosions have destroyed the outer buildings at all three of the units, caused when technicians vented steam from the containment chambers to ease a dangerous buildup of pressure. Seventy percent of the fuel rods at the number 1 reactor and 33 percent at the number 2 reactor are believed to have already been damaged or melted.

At units 4, 5 and 6, the rods were removed for maintenance before last week's earthquake and placed in cooling ponds outside the containment chambers. With the plant's pumping systems damaged by the earthquake and tsunami, those rods are also in danger of becoming exposed.

Worry spreads across Japan

The drama has caused alarm across a country already traumatized by the largest earthquake ever recorded in Japan.

The governor of Fukushima prefecture, Yuhei Sato, said at a news conference that panic caused by inaccurate reporting of the nuclear crisis is preventing relief supplies from reaching the evacuees and victims of the earthquake. He urged nuclear power company officials to give out more accurate information and appealed to all Japanese to extend help to those who have been evacuated.

In Tokyo, residents have been buying up facemasks and protective gear while some foreign governments have warned their nationals to leave the capital.

Edano said Japan is preparing to ask the United States for technical assistance and may reach out to other countries. The International Atomic Energy Agency is also preparing to dispatch a team of experts.

The only weapon we need is love to fight our self destruction nature.

16-03-2011 Christie (USA)

Why can't the evacuated people who have lost everything be transported to southern Japan? Busses could take them to the western shore and cruise ships could sail them to southern Japan.

16-03-2011 Graeme Henderson (Australia)

Nuclear Energy is safe! We need to find all the pro-nuclear people and jail them for life. Maybe we can convert this power station into a prison for them.

My heart goes out to Japan and the people Everyone please help them

16-03-2011 tim (u s)

Where are the nuke engineers from other countries and ge. Surely they can rig temp power to get temp pumps running

I dont think japand understands the danger of nuclear power that had learn the hard way

16-03-2011 azuka okolie (Nigeria)

i wish japan all the luck as they recover from this quake and to my brothers and sisters in japan my condolence you all.

16-03-2011 Merufumoto

Of course they couldn't give out bad news too quickly, because to do so would have caused a catastrophic panic that may well have cost more lives.

16-03-2011 Nix (South Africa)

I've been criticised for years on my stand against nuclear power because 'it's so safe, it's cleaner etc. etc.' I hope the rest of the world wakes the hell up. If Japan, with all its technology can't remain safe after a natural disaster, then how would the rest of us make it?

16-03-2011 R. Bala Raja Reddy (India)

Japanese have always been first in athletics and asian games and all sort of events whatsoever and the best manners they have in the world. I was always inspired by their manners and learnt to behave like them despite me being a converted christian born in a hindu conveted family faollowing all pryaers and i like the song saionara sainora etc, wish u all the best all gods i pray will help Japan

Here it goes again.when trouble hits.they ask America first.why do we always have to go into more debt to be the police or hospital for everyone. Just gets old...!!!

16-03-2011 R S Yadaw (India)

I pray to God to save the life of people of Japan & hope God will show the way to rescue the affected people from natural disaster. I hope soon the people of Japan will turn on their normal life. O God ! Help them.

VATIC ALERT: There Will Be No Japanese Radiation Disaster - Here's Why!!!! http://www.businessinsider.com/japan-reactors-pose-no-risk-2011-3-1 March 14, 2011 at 8:57am , by morgsatlarge, BI Nuclear Expert at MIT

16-03-2011 Beanie (US)

I think that they should use robots to move and direct water hoses to spray water into the reactor. Use remote controlled planes to drop water onto the reactor. Use robots and not people to work in the dangerous areas. Robots are very developed now and can be controlled from 1000s of miles away.

16-03-2011 krag r. (usa)

Although my father fought in WW2,my heart goes out to tbe Japanese people. Having earned a purple beart on the island battles of Kiska and Attu, dad was rather un-sympathetic to any asian troubles. I suppose had i been in a war, i might also feel that way too. Again, godspeed to Japan. My they find a solution before things really deteriorate.

16-03-2011 M K Moni (India)

Really unfortunate.Wishing the Japanees to face the situation bravely.

16-03-2011 Dr. Lloyd Ryan (Canada)

We have become one world-country. The sooner we recognize it, the better for humanity. This is not Japan's crisis; this is a crisis for all of us. There is no room for finger-pointing or self-righteousness. We are all in this together, the family of humanity. We belong to each other.

16-03-2011 John (Canada)

Japan is preparing to ask for experts to come in? Why are they not there already, admit it Japan you cannot handle this yourselves

16-03-2011 David (Thailand)

Thanks for the really dumb comment about robots. I am sure they didnt think about that. Maybe you should take charge of the situation.

16-03-2011 kevin (United States)

. Safe Nuclear Power = Oxymoron .

16-03-2011 Tom

R U crazy? Robots LOL, this is serious, If people must die than at least some will be saved.

16-03-2011 (US)

Should have ask for help prior to severe catastrophe at the nuclear plant!

16-03-2011 Thomas (US)

@ Beanie I'm pretty sure they may have already thought about that, but it was probably ruled out. This is probably more difficult than we could imagine.

16-03-2011 uhmnc

I guess Beanie is right

16-03-2011 mike (canada)

I dont know why the Japanese govt did not immediately reach out to the world for assistance with these nuclear plants, especially with such a disasterous quake. This percived pride has proven to be almost as disasterous as the geological events.

16-03-2011 Alexander ejiro (nigeria)

This incident in Japan probs the effect of technological expansionism.Third world countries beware

16-03-2011 wklywrkr12 (United States)

What the devil took the International Atomic Energy Agency so long to respond to this obvious nuclear emergency?

16-03-2011 rao (india)

this japaneese are full developed. they know very well. how can they construct these plants across sea.

16-03-2011 Cecil (US)

Sure, how long will it take you to build those robots? We'll wait. Oh, by the way, microelectronic circuits fail when bombarded with neutrons. You might want to take that into account in your designs.

16-03-2011 Muruli (India)

i pray the god to give enough courage , streanght, energy to japan people to face the disaster.plz god save the people.

16-03-2011 bob (USA)

the robot need to be hardened against nuclear exposure to be effective. If not the all the electronics will be fried and rener useless.

16-03-2011 Pablo (ES)

Robots would take too long to prepare.

16-03-2011 D F (US)

Would dry Ice react with the core. I say if it does not pump fry ice directly into the towers surrounding the core. May not be cost effective but if it works do it. Besides it cools things fast.

16-03-2011 Muruli (India)

i pray the god to give enough courage , streanght, energy to japan people to face the disaster.plz god save the people.

16-03-2011 Roberto (USA)

The IAEA should have been prepared to send in people immediately following the earthquake. These people are asleep at the switch.

16-03-2011 rathod darshan (india)

i think the nsituation is gettin worst day bu day. at such time major neuclear power countries should come ahead for the help with the latest technology awailable with rather than keepin it secret ..........

16-03-2011 Steve (PHC)

My prayers and thoughts are with the people of Japan. I wonder if there isn't a substance to cool the core that can be dropped from a slurry bomber.

16-03-2011 shawnhoopslefty (usa)

in the light of the event in japan, why do they have to ask for assistance?this is the plight of mankind, from the hood to the gated neighborhood, all these great countries collectively could form a plan and merge together to overcome the crisis.O WHERE ART MY BROTHER

16-03-2011 usman Ghani (Pakistan)

Apart from this crisis, just want to say by developing these nuclear palnts, we are destroying earth ourself......My question is simple do we want to destroy earth?

16-03-2011 Megatron (Cybertron)

As a representative of the robot race, I'm appalled at the lack oh humanity you show our kind. Would you accept our race forcing humans to face such dangerous radiation levels when one of our fission reactors has a core breach? I think not!

16-03-2011 Brian Washburn (USA)

My name is Brian Washburn an over the road truck driver here in the US...I have a family and and being separated from them for a couple wks at a time is hard enough...my heart and prayers go to you...wish their was something I could do...so I pray...be safe...

16-03-2011 Jya

Terrible. And to think that people complain about windfarms!

16-03-2011

Japan developed robots

16-03-2011 Dan (US)

not that simple, beanie. First robotic systems have to be INTEGRATED into the process - expensive and never totally fail-safe. Plus, remember that robots needs electricity to run; and the plants failed because of NO ELECTRICITY ! The Japanese society was SO MUCH better before Admiral Perry went to visit them. What a mistake they made to adopt the Western ways.

16-03-2011 Ann Shannon (USA)

God bless all of Japan, and deep honor and gratitude to the workers who remain at the plant.. The world is with you. Please, members of the press, be aggressive in demanding specific levels, RATES, and duration of radiation levels. Generalizations (such as "a sharp increase in radiation") simply do not meet the needs and rights of the public to know what is going on. .

16-03-2011

Lord Jesus, I pray for this country, and it's citzens with my love and concern. Let us reach out in anyway we can to support you and through you give empathy and support. Let us recognize our brothers and sisters of this world and know our prayers can make a difference. I pray we open our resources of any size to aid in food, clothing, support, and to let us embrace Japan within our hearts each moment. i pray for your will to be done, Amen

16-03-2011 akbar hussain (india)

i know japan is a developed country but tecnologist have not any tecnique through this they do information to the people?

16-03-2011 Isabel (USA)

It is very sad to see what has happened to Japan. I still cannot believe it. All we can do is pray that things do not get worse and pray for the people there, that is living through this crisis. I do agree with Beanie though. Put robots to do these things. Many lives have been lost already, dont risk anyones life anymore. God Bless!

16-03-2011 gmseed (Scotland)

But the UK and US governments nevertheless steam roller straight ahead with their expansion of nuclear energy programmes.

16-03-2011 Lee (US)

I pray for the people of Japan. They have a long, hard way to recover from this. I pray the nuclear disaster will be contained with small loss of life and health. I have given what I can to contribute to alleviating what is sure to be great need. I pray that emergency supplies reach the hundreds of thousands of homeless before disease strikes at them.

16-03-2011 Brian Cotter (Ireland)

Is the plant owned by GE? If so then this would make it an American problem

16-03-2011 S Rao (India)

Japan can over come crisis of 2nd world war. Certainly they will build the country back to its glory.

16-03-2011

Christie, There's no room for more people in southern Japan.

16-03-2011

Evacuate the population, let the cores melt down already, make Diane Sawyer do another 60-minute special report on the humanity of it all, and let's get back to normal things like fretting about how expensive gas is and our war in Iraq. Hoo-ra.

16-03-2011 paul (uk)

get a pump.....nuclear rods need cooling. why is there no gravity fed back up.

16-03-2011 Cameron (United States)

Why is it that everyone comes to us first for solutions to their problems? The united states has enough on its plate without Japan problems. This will just create more national debt, which in return puts us deeper in the hole. People just need to wise up. When they tell you there's a tsunami coming, leave.

16-03-2011 chinmayee (india)

i pray to god that people who r safe will start their life again safely.hope d scienctists will find new way to help d peoples.

16-03-2011 kis (usa)

ya lets have will smith an his irobot buddys on the scene. o maybe they will call in some terminators the T1000s. get reAl. real ppl have to b on the job. I hope for japan in this terrible ordeal.

16-03-2011 Sarah (US)

You have to remember that we can't just go into a country, no matter what the circumstances unless that government specifically asks. They asked for relief help, we did it. They did ask for nuke help, so we can't until they ask. I do tink, however, that agencies such as the IAEA should have reign over these things, no matter what country. You want nuclear energy, this is the ruler over it.

16-03-2011

may we all learn from this that we have never attianed scientfic full level of knowledge to have a safe controle over all we have inevented in time of a disaster??

16-03-2011 Adeel (Pakistan)

Hope the situation will be under control soon. My love and prays for Japanese people.

16-03-2011 Sam (USA)

It is indeed an unfortunate combination of circumstances that led to this disaster. Let us hope that the rest of the nuclear enterprise learns the lessons of this disaster and try to shut down all the decrepit old reactors now running with extended life. Let us hope the Japan situation ends satisfactorily and the rest of the industry and Governments wakes up.

16-03-2011 ED BLEVINS (UNITED STATES)

The Japanese are a orderly culture,The rest of the world would be in total chaos. My heart and prayers go out to these brave people

16-03-2011 D (United States of Coruption)

Good thoughts for the people of Japan. In this time of crisis leave it to Americans to armchair quarterback the whole scenario.

16-03-2011 Good_Wife (USA)

"Here it goes again.when trouble hits.they ask America first.why do we always have to go into more debt to be the police or hospital for everyone. Just gets old...!!!" Perhaps because that is how civilized nations are supposed to act. I hope we are still a civilized nation.

16-03-2011 Cheryl Klingenberg (USA)

Love and light to all who are suffering in Japan through this unimaginable crisis.

16-03-2011 PaulC (Australia)

Its surprises me that no one has asked the question "How can Japan ask other people from other countries to jump in get contaminated and possibly die in order to fix their problem?" The Japanese are a proud people too. They are doing the best they can and are getting the best advice where needed. I stand in total admiration of these people and how they are dealing with this extraordinarily difficult task.

16-03-2011 Myriah (Canada)

If the power company wasn't so busy trying to cover it up, they could have gotten help from other countries in their before it got this hot. The Japanese government is being so courteous and polite to the power company that they're going to turn Japan into a hot zone

16-03-2011 b n krishna swamy (india)

I WISH THAT THE BROTHEREN OF JAPAN MAY BE BLESSED WITH DUE COURAGE TO FACE THE PRESENT CRISIS AND TO GET BACK TO THE NORMALCY AT THE EARLIEST

16-03-2011 Jami (US)

I'm sorry but you are wrong "Beanie."No we cannot do that with robots, but your idea with the plane is a good one.

16-03-2011 Philip (USA)

4 protective nutrients: 1) potassium iodide (or lots of kelp) 2) gamma-tocotrienol (a form of vitamin E) 3) coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinol) 4) alpha-lipoic acid

16-03-2011 Chris Bell (United Kingdom)

All the best for Japan, they are an inspiring culture with a rich history. They always seem to get the wrong end of the stick. I hope that they can recover from this disaster and get back to normal life.

16-03-2011 Benjamin P. L. Turner (United States of America)

The nuclear power plants got hit by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake almost directly under where they were built, then got hit by a 21 foot high tsunami. They operated perfectly for 40 years. Trying to argue that nuclear power is unsafe after all the previous information is like shooting a man in the face and declaring that bulletproof vests are useless.

16-03-2011

What blows my mind is they didn't have any backup power systems to run the pumps in the event of a power failure... HELLOOOO.... what the hell were they not thinking!!! All of this would have been averted if they had had battery and or gasoline powered generators and pumps for this type of emergency. Especially for nuclear power plants to not have redundant power is so obvious, I just don't get it!!!

16-03-2011 Nitin Raj (India)

God Please help Japan to Recover

16-03-2011 Joe (USA)

There is temporary power being rigged in order to continue pumping in sea water. The Japanese have trained for every emergency scenario, including this one. This seems like the perfect storm, but even for this they are as equipped as anyone to handle it. I have all the confidence in the world that they pull it off.

16-03-2011 sundar (india)

sad for such a desciplined nation like japan. obama should not let nuclear lobbyist ( big money industries ) to lead the decision processes. unfortunately the largest democracy india is limp like our priminister!! wish we could be there to guide these world enviromental decisions.

16-03-2011 Jim (USA)

Where are the fire boats/tugs that can blast huge volumes of sea water?

16-03-2011 Bob (USA)

This is the worst situation that Japan is facing so I pray for Japan n Japanese people. God bless them n just help Japan.

16-03-2011 Falguni Guharay (Nicaragua)

At this stage, the nuclear disaster in Japan is not only a problem of a private company of Japan but for the rest of the world. Japanese Government must and should open up to put in place an international nuclear emergency task force lead by International Atomic Energy Commission and all the experts including those from Chernobyl and Three miles Island. Thousands of lives are at risk now in Japan and elsewhere.

16-03-2011 Tony (Croatia)

@Beanie. Robots can't be controlled remotely through the radiation since the radio signal can't go through, but I think that Japanese people have very high morale and so their government is going to do everything that's necessarily to prevent further damage as well as protect people's lives.

16-03-2011 Mark (England)

Our hearts go out to the struggling Japanese people. Those who have already been affected by the forces of nature, and those not yet affected. Nuclear power is safe, all things relative. It is much safer than coal fired. How many people have died in the mines aroung the world?? Any catastrophe of nature, can and will inflict pain and difficulty to mankind. We will overcome. Good luck Japan.

16-03-2011 PRAKASH P (INDIA)

We invite all Japanese people to India to work and live. Why to stay in a dangerous nuclear place. You can live peacefully in India. What business or work you do in Japan can be done in India by the japanese people.

I pray that god will bring you all through this ruff time. I pray for the safety of everyone over there that's still alive. And I also pray for the families who have lost loved one. May the strength and mercy of god be with you.

16-03-2011 Neil (UK)

Unfortunately, we have no choice but to continue using nuclear energy. We are almost certainly reaching peak-oil, and over the next 30-40yrs, we will almost certainly have to rely heavily on nuclear energy until other (viable) alternatives come into mainstream use. Simply put, we have no real choice but to not only continue to use nuclear energy, but actually increase it.

16-03-2011 Ganesh (New Zealand)

Its so devastating to see the flow-on effect of the disaster. May be its time to think and plan a world without nuclear power, including Japan.

16-03-2011 b n krishna swamy (india)

Please check the death toll of previous nuclear power plant meltdown or incident. It is different to Nuclear bomb. And consider how many people die from coal and any other form of power generation.

16-03-2011 Anirudh (India)

Nuclear Energy is safe but not perfect, it depend where we are using it... at Japan where earth quack is very frequent will might be not a safe place but we have to remember that we have limited bio fuel so need a alternative until we found a perfect source of energy. God help Japan's people.

16-03-2011 James (Aus)

Robert from USA, The guy who wrote your article (http://www.businessinsider.com/japan-reactors-pose-no-risk-2011-3-1) is a specialist in supply chain management at MIT, not a nuclear scientist - or even someone with more expertise than being able to read wikipedia. Just because he's got a Phd doesn't make him an expert.

16-03-2011 Robzy (South Africa)

All my prayers go out to you Japan! i wish you a fast recovery and may all the people who cannot find there loved ones and friends etc,may you all find each over and may all the people who are lost and don't know each other, may you find someone to and be their for each other!! god bless you, Japan. you will recover from this, in if it takes many years to come!

16-03-2011 Bhupinder Singh Raja (Punjab India)

Japanese are brave, intelligent they live on land of Rising Sun. I think they can control the situation, may Vaheguru Ji help them.

16-03-2011 Caroline G (Australia)

The use of robots is the best idea ive heard in ages, why has no-one thought of this before !!!!

16-03-2011 Karl (USA)

The Russians tried using robots at Chernobyl, and they failed in a brief time. Apparently high levels of radiation affects electronic circuits as well as mechanical devices. The first photographers often suffered mechanical failures in their cameras.

16-03-2011 Banyai (USA)

There is good and bad in every thing we do.So sometimes we just have to weigh out the options.there is 10million times the energy in nuclear than gas.and both have their set backs.

16-03-2011 SUBHASH (india)

Now the only solution is to prevent the radiation by making a concreate wall around the nuclear fuel storing as nearer as possible.

16-03-2011 Ron (US)

Hard to argue with the facts, though. http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2010/apr/22/lamar-alexander/facts-risks-nuclear-power-plants/ (no US commercial nuclear power deaths) and there is seems little question that fossil fuels are causing tens of thousands of deaths per year. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/20/science/earth/20fossil.html?_r=1&adxnnl=1&adxnnlx=1300278980-ENlwea1VuF+Bxfsa7X1YlA What is happening is a tragedy, but we need to keep some perspective.

16-03-2011 rskirad@gmail.com (India)

I would like to present myself as a Volunteer to help in this natural clamity. I would not hasitate even to go into radiation area. This is offered in just humanity and love and not with any expectation. Please ask if i can do something good for Japan. 8805987702

japan and it's people deserve more and more appreciation for their calmness and patience in such a horrible situation.we the people, world over, must pray and provide them all the basic ammenities

16-03-2011 Tory (USA)

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone effected by this horrific natural disaster. My GOD grant you peace in your loss, speedy assistance in the stabilization of the nuclear disaster and give you all you need to sustain your needs. 16-03-2011 Neil F (UK)

"I pray to God to save the life of people of Japan & hope God will show the way to rescue the affected people from natural disaster. " But why would he get involved now? He clearly hasn't bothered getting involved at all yet... He's quite happily sitting on the side lines watching the death and suffering...

16-03-2011 gpshemi (usa)

Oh hell...nuke power can be made safe...we just don't do it!!

16-03-2011 Aidan (AUS)

Japan sits bang on the centre of 3 major tectonic plates!!! Why the hell on earth would any engineer/developer/government even think to consider building one of these death plants in such a natural disaster prone country????? Absolutely perplexed :s

16-03-2011 A (USA)

Beanie - has made a very good suggestion, unmanned mechanisms could provide a possible additional aid, not a solution but aid to the solution

16-03-2011 andy (usa)

i wish all the best to the people of Japan, they have given many thing to the world in a blssed way. my our lord Jesus look after them in thier time of need and sorrow

My heart goes out to this country and it's people. Their behavior during this catastrophe for their fellow man is so touching. There were no looting reported and everyone politely wait in line for their rations in the midst of this turmoil is a fine example for us to follow.

there are more than what meets the eye, dangerous plutonium leaks much more hazardous.

16-03-2011 Pastor Kim (USA)

Someone who said: "Why do we (the U.S.) always have to go into more debt to be the hospital for everyone?": was too cowardly to post their name. I am stunned when I hear such mean spirited thoughts coming from a fellow citizen. Obviously this individual has never heard (or absorbed): "Do to others as you would have them do to you.:"

Japan was the first country to ban on wearing Burqa by muslims. Japan was the first country that stop the reciting of Quran. : my condolence to all japanese. GOD please save them from these radiations. The radiations are leaking heavily now according to the japan local news agency.

16-03-2011 Albert (United States of America)

Nuke power is the future. The problems being presented are due to relying on mechanical backup systems. Looking the situation from a lay persons viewpoint I do not understand why those plants do not have water storage tanks such as those used in cities municipal water systems with a manual valves to supply emergency cooling water to the containment vessel. If they have them they need to improve upon them. Just sayin....

16-03-2011 Sandeep Thakur (India)

We have to help them.. lets all help them...

16-03-2011 Nancy (America)

Ever since the horrible destructive force of the atom has been blundered upon, man has tried to make something "good" out of it. (medicine, power). Give it up! It's deadly poison from a death culture that needs to pass into history. The whole idea is a mistake. We need to do better--cleaner, safer, perpetual.

i request to god that nothing happen to japanese.bez in the past 20 years japanese face 80+ earth quakes. so this is the biggest earth quake that japanese face first time. so every one should pry to god that nothing happen to japanes as well as every one in the world due to radioactive material.

16-03-2011 dave (u.s)

I think this all could been prevented if they never build a nuclear power plant on a active fault line.I just hope we all learn from this action and not build dangerous things again on any unstable places..I think shouldnt had been done in first place.

16-03-2011 Appi (india)

If an accident/natural calamity is this far, how far can be a war with the nuclear weapons?

16-03-2011 Sam (UK)

For those bashing the U.S., we stand ready to help but have to wait for the Japanese government to request assistance. Think about it. It's not like they asked and we said, "Uh...no."

i take pride in the fact that we are the first country to turn to when tragedy hits. there are some decisions made by our government that i don't agree with, but the decision to help Japan, in my eyes, is beyond acceptable.

The Japanese have always set an example to the whole world in terms of their manners. They are very kind and hardworking. Japan is a great nation and surely will fight back this catastrophe with vigor. I don't understand the immobility of the US. They attacked Iraq to protect Iraqi people from the supposed 'weapons of mass destruction'. Now here is a real danger in Japan, lives are at stake. What is the US doing now? With US help or not, Japan will surely come around. My best wishes for them.

16-03-2011 Krishan Aggarwal (India)

Oh Japan!! I wish it comes our of this crises as soon as possible. It feels so helpless. May the Gods be with you guys.

16-03-2011 PRAKASH SAXENA (INDIA, NEW DELHI)

In this hour of need and distress I and my family extend full support and good wishes to all the people of Japan engulfed in the present crisis and pray to God to bless and extend wisdom and help to Japanese nation as a whole to crack the solution to the crisis to overcome by all means the present disaster and save all the people grieved or not.

Its getting bad day by day. Everytime I search for Japan news my heart start beating faster. Hope that countries from all across the glob will advance their helping hand all direction wether it is Nuclear or Humitarian.

16-03-2011 Anna (US)

My heart goes out to Japan. I admire them for the way they are dealing wth this tragedy. Their behavior is exceptional. After viewing the photos, it appears that the outer containment walls have been compromised it at least two reactors. I am proud that america can and is helping Japan. It is our moral duty to help one another. What kind of selffish people could stand by and do nothing. If it were us in this position, I would hope that others would be compassionate and help!

16-03-2011 Nathan (USA)

Sure, as if Japan has a warehouse full of firefighting robots and has just elected not to use them. Beanie, your idea is a good one, except that you would have to be a month or twelve into the meltdown before the robots could show up, because you have to design, build, program, and coordinate robot production. Kind of difficult to do when you also have thousands of people to rescue, house, resettle, and feed, and not anywhere near fast enough.

16-03-2011 Ashvani (India)

Japan needs everyone helping them in this time of crises. Let each responsible govt of any country understand that we have to reach them without they asking for it. Anyone of us can get into this serious issue in our respective countries. Open the doors of help after all we are humans.

16-03-2011

This is the time for us to work together to save the people in Japan, not to judge.

16-03-2011 roy boy (Australia)

WE now see people in Japan who really need our help to resettle their shattered lives. These people are true refugees they are not running from their homes like some. These people have no homes why not take even for a year or two ten thousand of these unfortunate souls and rehouse them in Australia. These people are not illegal boat people. these are true refugees

this should be a wake up call to all nations with nuclear energy to find alternatives coz this is a catastrophe.we create things that in real sense could be harmful to us.let the world learn and act upon this.i hope all the affected can find new beginings again.the world should all chip in to assist at their time of need

16-03-2011 Nag (India)

I pray god help japan and stop the nuclear accident and save human life

16-03-2011 Jon (US)

For all of your anti-nuclear advocates out there, nuclear power powers my home and lowers the cost of electricity. You can't be ready for every contingency. If Japan knew about the earthquake ahead of time, I'm sure they would have done things differently.

16-03-2011 dr rajesh a.g. (india)

its high time the global nuclear experts coordinate with the helpless japs to overcome this tragedy

16-03-2011 Ockert (South Africa)

Why does natural disasters always happen to good countries? It should rather happen to war stricken/rebellious countries like Libya or Zimbabwe because that way all enemies will learn to work together to survive instead of fighting against each other just to promote political powers.

16-03-2011 binkie (usa)

Robots? Cruise ships? these are some of the dumbest comments. Why dont all the evacuated people just go on a vacation cruise. Rants and Raves from people who are not helping, just talking!!!!!

16-03-2011 Malin (Sri Lanka)

May all good things happen ; all around Japan, all around the nuclear plant too; May all decision be successful and make this land calm again......

16-03-2011 Down south (USA)

Where I come from we help each other ! That's what GOD intended for us to do help each other in times of need! So what if we are not receiving help when we need it, I feel honored that I live in the country that gets called first to help those in need! That's what we should do, or maybe that's just good morals and values ive learned from living in the south!I'm from the country and I love it that way!

16-03-2011

The negative comments need to stop what happens there has an effect on all things across the board, pray for help for them.

16-03-2011 Bill (USA)

Living near the coast is safe! We need to find all the coastal land developers and jail them for life. Maybe we can convert the beach into a prison for them.

16-03-2011

Solute to the 50 HEROES now struggling in Fukushima plant!

16-03-2011

PEOPLE, I love everyone around this world. I DO BELIEVE THAT THE NUCLEAR PLANT CAUSED THE EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI. We have to go back to the old way of living.

16-03-2011 SOLOMON (NIGERIA)

I FEEL VERY SAD WHEN I SAW THE THEN EXTENT OF DESTRUCTIONS IN JAPAN, I PRAY THEY WILL PICK UP COURAGE IN ALL MIGHTY GOD WHO GIVES THEM THE POWER OF KNOWLEDGE TO COME OUT OF THIS GREAT TRIAL IN JESUS MIGHTY NAME AMEN. IRAN SHOULD LISTEN TO THE WORLD POWERS, BECAUSE IF THIS TYPE OF EVENT HAPPEN TO IRAN WHAT WILL BE THE FAITH OF OTHER COUNTRIES AROUND THEM.

16-03-2011 Nataraj (India)

Japanese have been Hardworking and have excelled in many fields of specialisation. Even now many countries have been trying to compete with Japan. No to forget the way how Japan has developed after Hiroshima bombing. Despite hardships like Volcano, earthquake, Tsunami and many more they still have been #1. I heard from one of my friend who had gone to work in Japan about the kindness and good nature of the Japanese people. Lets all pray to God to give them the courage to overcome all hardships.

16-03-2011 concerned (India)

why earth is angry? have we exploded any nuclear blast in her heart in the name of nuclear test? think for a while and stop the destruction of earth and life of all beings over the earth.Save the earth to save our selves.

16-03-2011 Patricia Jessup. (South Africa.)

Hopefully mankind will learn from the unspeakable castastrophe that has hit this stricken country. We haveseen the devastating power of nuclear forces unleashed with most devastaing consequences.Today Japan- tomorrow the world.....

16-03-2011 PJW (USA)

My thoughts are with all who have been affected by this disaster. We need to more education about the hazards of nuclear energy AND we need to reduce our consumption of energy.

16-03-2011 Anna (US)

I admire the way that the people of Japan are conducting themselves during such catastrophy! I am proud the the US is helping them. It is our moral duty to help one another as humans! Ignorance sometimes gets in the way of doing the right thing for some folks! I wish them well. May god bless them!

16-03-2011 F. Fazri

We are lucky, as we can see clearly that tsunami is the cause of crisis.. if not, maybe this crisis will be said as done by muslim terrorist. haha

16-03-2011 Neil (UK)

Desperate measures are being adopted to deal with the incidents at Fukushima. Although caused by a natural disaster the country should have been better prepared for such a situation given the earthquake and tsunami in the far east area several years ago. That said, expertise drawn from all countries of the world should not hesitate to assist Japan in their hour of need. I wish I could help personally.

16-03-2011 raluca.riverwind

I hope as human nature we learn to give and share freeleey. Nothing not even money is important that life....is this civilized domesticated society forget that? And sell you a T.V. dinner. What are we doing everyone. Life is priceless!

16-03-2011 Morons (US)

They are not reporting it correctly...there is still no release to the public. The evacuation is a pro-cautionary. Check this site if you would really like to know what is going on "http://www.world-nuclear-news.org/". Oh, and just to stop that next post about how the backround counts were above normal. 1000 time backround count is still less that smoking a pack of cigarettes. Or flying across the pacific one way.

16-03-2011 savannah (u.s)

we pray for all these poor people may god help them and have mercie

16-03-2011 Mike (USA)

Why do the Japanese officials wear these silly filtration masks, like those worn by physicians at hospitals, that do not prevent inhalation of radionuclides? This makes the public believe they are safe by wearing them too and it's a farse; a completely malicious joke on the Japanese people. The universal color of radionuclide filtration media is magenta, and such half face masks must have a rubber or similar type of seal to the facial tissue.

16-03-2011 Dr.K.S.Rama Krishna (India)

I pray God for the safety of all people living in Japan.

16-03-2011 ian (ireland)

HI-just worried that most of the exposed population near the plant NEAR fukushima(100 km radius) are not wearing breathing filters/masks except for authorities. one minute contaminated particle inhaled will cause lung cancer-are they informing the people about this-I'VE had two e-mails form a friend in Fukushima prefecture who was not aware of this. There is a very low radioactive count in Fukushima prefecture-just 18 microsieverts to-day-24 yesterday.

16-03-2011

Please help people in Japan. It s time for everybody to rethink the use of nuclear power for the high interest of humanity and how we all protect our environment

16-03-2011 mark anthony (united states)

16-03-2011 donny (costa rica)

Why is usa waiting to be ask for help if this was war for oil they would be the first ones to get their noses in. Obama you better go and help japanese people, because for what I read if there's a nuclear catastrophe your dear hawaii is going to be gone too

16-03-2011 Anonymous High Schooler (U.S.A.)

(US) The us is the first to pick a fight but when a nation needs our help where are we. We should have been there already. My response at this is, that we had to wait to be asked for help. Japanese culture is very big on pride and Honor. We had to respectfully wait for them to ask for help. And when they did, we sent our atomic experts. Thanks

16-03-2011 Patrick Pittman (United States)

Nuclear energy is one of the safest way to generate energy and has been present for over 50 years. The thing that gets me was why did they build a plant so close to the ocean? And why it was even considered. I know hind site is 20/20 but that chose of location was just stupid. They should consider closing all nuclear plants located near such threats.

16-03-2011 Cả Thá»™n (Hà Ná»™i)

They asked US to help because of US Know-how and US willingness. They did not ask Vietnamese to help!Well...about 10 US navy ships are there now to help.

16-03-2011 Aravindan and Abinaya (India)

We two are brother and sister studying in 5th and 7th respectively and we were there in Japan for 2 years. We know the people of Japan. They love other country people and give more respect. No racism and no particiality and help other country people very much. At this juncture we would like to extend our moral support to Japan and we hope they will recover soon. Our hearty condolences to the deprived people of Japan. We love Japan and Japanese too much.

16-03-2011

tim - the pumps have been exposed to salt water, they are seized up and history. beans - i think the whole world does not understand, don't put that on japan why do they ask america? cause they got the tech.

16-03-2011 PaxUs (Australia)

The Japanese people were the first to suffer from this destructive energy on the planet and have bravely lived beyond the nuclear nightmare of WW2. To once again be stricken, by this monster from their past, is bitter irony. It would have been logical to assume Japan being the last nation on Earth to embrace this industry. But then again, perhaps it is like falling off a horse for the first time. You get straight back in the saddle to overcome your fear.

16-03-2011 JPG (US)

The world is increasingly in need of more electrical power with people becoming more wary of the nuclear option. But to give up on nuclear power would be a GRAVE MISTAKE. Certainly nuclear power can be made to be a very safe option. The technology is truly available today. Hydrocarbon sources are being significantly depleted and is becoming supply constrained. Solar and wind options are still expensive and only complimentary to steady sources (mainly hydrocarbon and nuclear).

16-03-2011 Troy Kuster (Canada)

First, I offer sincere condolences to the Japanese people lost, injured, displaced by this tragedy. I believe that the international community needs to rally humanitarian efforts to alleviate the impact to this great nation. Just as it should in each and every place where such devastation occurs.

16-03-2011 Eufordem (USA)

Dear Anti-nuke people, Don't you also think governments should immediately move all residents from any area where 8.0 or higher earthquakes because people have been killed? Do you hold the Japanese government responsible for 10,000 deaths because they allow people to live near a coast where the KNOW historically that major tsunamis have occurred? Why is this OK, but nuclear power us not? Think about it.

16-03-2011 imamatthews (USA)

We need more than Love for this problem!  500,000 are homeless; you cannot just ship them all South. This is a complex geo/political/money&power problem. The power company in question has a dismal safety record. The nuclear industry has understated the many dangers and have paid enough people off, so that they can get away with what amounts to a multimillion dollar lie!

16-03-2011

The key issue is maintaining the geometry of the fuel rods and keeping them cool stops a partial or full melt down, however it is essentail that the geometry is maintained to avoid any criticality and injection of abosrber material is essentail to protect against loss of Geometry. A solution maybe to use Boron Dust or Small Boron glass beads which are the ultimate protection for Gas Reactors

16-03-2011 gouthamj (India)

God please help. Its tough for us to handle. We need some help from you as well.

16-03-2011 Quad

People, read your bible. I pray for those people just as everyone else is, but these things are meant to happen. Why you might ask? Read your bible. Of course there are those that will persecute what I type, my comment, that is supposed to happen as well. Again I say as loudly as I can in print READ YOUR BIBLE! Time is near!

16-03-2011 James (Kenya)

The whole world should come together and show solidarity with the people of Japan during these trying times that they are going through. Lets pool our resources and take action. Today it's Japan tomorrow we don't know

16-03-2011 Rachel Gibson (UK South West)

My heart goes out to Japan and those suffering becuase of disaster and disease ~ Japan people will rise again ~ they are the most aptient people i have ever seen - people here complain far more about far little - time to appreciate what we have and to live each day as it comes ~ Blessed be Japan - Peace to all

16-03-2011 Graham (UK)

I thought that power station reactors were designed to automatically extract a number fuel rods in the event of cooling failure, just enough to stop the chain reaction or again insertion by gravity of mediator rods to slow down the reaction. Why were the cooling water pumps and control system not set on concrete plinths say 12mts above ground. The power station is after all in an earthquake / tsunami zone .Graham

16-03-2011 K. (u.s)

If they need help, we should help. Because if the radiation gets into the air, we're all in trouble.

16-03-2011 NG (U.S.)

People who are saying that this shows how unsafe nuclear power is don't understand that this type of reactor that is legal to build in Japan would be illegal in the west because it is unsafe. There are many different types of reactors and the one in question is one of the least safe. Also the type of radiation is not the heavy type most people fear but a lighter iodide version that will likely land in the sea and will disappear in 1-4 months even from sea creatures.

16-03-2011 tsn (Nigeria)

the world hardly recovers from a shock before it is confronted by another. There is cry for help everywhere. Who listens to the cry?

16-03-2011 Natural-World-Human Nature (United States of America)

Nuclear power systems evolved from the discovery of the naturally occurring radioactive systems that have always existed in our world. We all live eat and breathe in a natural world of radiation. We exist today on this planet because of a nuclear power source – the sun. The sun drives the wind and provides the source for solar power. We humans have only attempted to use this existing source.

16-03-2011

The reactors are shut down, but decay heat from the byproduct of fissions will still cause the temperature to rise if there is no cooling. You would need a water tower around 4500 feet tall to overcome the pressure inside the reactor. This is why you need a cooling pump and electricity to power it.

16-03-2011 MD (Philippines)

May God be with them, lets pray for their safety....

16-03-2011 bill witt (usa)

the reactors are safe, as long as they are not built on faults that have history of being among the most active in the world

16-03-2011 Karthik (India)

Almighty, Please help the Japan to back to Normal life

16-03-2011 Steve

It can be alot safer, however the corporations building and running them need to develop proper safety plans in case of emergency situations like this. It is much cleaner than burning coal, oil, Orimulsion, as all a properly running unit puts into the atmosphere is steam! We get more exposure from radon in our basements in a year than the workers usually get at one of these places. The public trully needs to be properly educated on nuclear power, but most are to stubborn to listen anyway.

16-03-2011 RAMESH TOSHNIWAL (INDIA)

AS AN ORDINARY TECHNICAL PERSON I AM REALLY IN A FIX TO UNDERSTAND THE REAL TROUBLE OF THIS POWER GENERATING COMPANY.IS PUMPING FAILURE OF WATER SUPPLY ONLY CAUSE OR EMPLOYEES ARE TOO SCARED TO GET NEAR AND REPAIR FAULTS OR APPLY OTHER METHODS LIKE SPRAYING SILICA ETC. FOR KEEPING THE CORE COOLED.IT MAY BE SUICIDAL FOR SOME PEOPLE IN FRONT TO GO NEAR AND DO THE JOB, BUT JAPAN IS WELL KNOWN FOR ITS BRAVE PEOPLE.

16-03-2011 Tom Smith (South Africa)

ROBOTS? ROBOTS? Come on we are talking about ROBOTS? The head of the IAEA is Japanese that is why they did not go right away, he does not want to take the blame for this since he looked away from all the failed saftey tests done by Tokyo Electric.

16-03-2011 Andrew (Russia)

To that vegan from Australia: nuclear energy IS safe, IF nuclear plant ISN'T older then the one in Chernobyl. Otherwise. We know two major nuclear disasters. Chernobyl and Fukushima. First one was the result of dangerous experiment with fool protection turned off. Second one caused by catastrophic earthquake. Honestly: do you call THAT a treat? It is much more safe than listening to enviromental freaks like you.

16-03-2011 jim wang (USA)

robots were used in cleanup of highly radioactive 3 mile island reactors in 1980's for 4 years. These robots worked fine and did their job in highly radioactive environment.. So sure they can be used again. There is no technical or technology issue, only no preparation

17-03-2011 alan (USA)

The sad thing is this old nuclear plant from the 70s was to be decommissioned within weeks. Dams fail and kill people, so do coal mines and oil refineries. New nuclear designs are light years ahead of those of the 70s and are much much safer. Yes I will always support nuclear power plants. You can put one in my back yard.

17-03-2011 Warrick (Australia)

We can only go on by what the media is informing us ( The world's population ). This natural disaster will affect every single on of us and if you think it won't you are a little naive . There would be a few officials that would know exactly on what is happening on the ground at the nuclear plant . The reason for this is to control the information going to media and not to panic the already battered japanese population. I pray for the people involed Plan for the worst hope for the best

17-03-2011 Dr.Aruna Devaraj (India)

Dear Breathren Meditation, Herbal Therapy & little Excercise will helpyou. Use minimum oil in food and green vegetables . We will uphold you with our prayers.

17-03-2011 James Craig (USA)

I would give my life to help these people with their reactor problems. buzzycraig.craig@gmail.com

17-03-2011 HumanRemodeling.com (USA)

Global village issue. The radioactivity would be in Hawaii in 36 hours, and to the West Coast of USA soon too. 2. This disaster is not because of "some corrupt politicians" but because *we, ordinary people* the consumers, request electricity to run our dryers, airconditioners, lights, power machines, cars, hot water showers, ***we the people must start living more in accord with our resources. ****

17-03-2011 mike (usa)

i hope it workes out for them. if it don t call obama

17-03-2011 aike (Japan)

Many Japanese people had believed the information from the government and Tokyo Electric Power Company. But we cannot help doubting the information from them because foreign media including VOA speak about the crisis differently. Japanese government and media seem to undervalue the influence of the nuclear crisis. Information from VOA and other foreign media is helpful for Japanese people.

17-03-2011

What blows my mind is they didn't have any backup power systems to run "the pumps in the event of a power failure... HELLOOOO.... what the hell were they not thinking!!! All of this would have been averted if they had had battery and or gasoline powered generators and pumps for this type of emergency. Especially for nuclear power plants to not have redundant power is so obvious, I just don't get it!!!"\ diesel generators were knocked out after the tsunami.

17-03-2011 DARPA+JAPAN ROBOTS (US)

Beanie is spot on. You naysayers don't have a better idea. DARPA's Grand Challenge & Japanese robots PROVED you can have autonomous robots get from point A to B. Bet hardened control system Big Trak with Dumpster (circa 1979). GET ON IT! This won't be over tomorrow. Robots used @ 3Mile Island, but yeah, it's impossible, so please continue to try and stifle the creative minds whilst not offering an alternative. Beanie types should visit Innocentive

17-03-2011 li (china)

is there plenty of ice available? Dropping cold ice instead of seawater. Cp of ice, water and steam are 2.1, 4.2 and 2.1 J·g−1·K−1, respectively. Ice heat fusion is 334 J.g-1. Therefore the ice is much more effective than sea water.

17-03-2011 Justin (USA)

I wonder if they can build a upside down funnel of lead material to cover the leaking site, the lead shall absorb most of radiation. while openning allow to pour the water or ice in to cool the ractions
