The Environmental Biology Major

The Department of Biology is pleased to offer a new major in Environmental Biology.

The major in Environmental Biology will offer a rigorous program of study in science related to the environment.  This major is designed to provide students with a foundation in population, whole organism, evolutionary and environmental biology as well as in chemistry and mathematics.  Additionally, the Environmental Biology major will emphasize critical reading and writing skills, the ability to communicate scientific concepts and results, an education in core scientific principles, and quantitative background related to hypothesis testing.

Students will apply to the Environmental Biology major during the second year.

Career Paths

Graduates of the Environmental Biology program will be grounded in the fundamentals of natural science and prepared to enter graduate programs in Ecology, Evolution, Genetics and others.  Students will also be prepared for careers in public policy, conservation, science education, medicine and international relations.

Senior Thesis and Tutorial Research

Each student will participate in in-depth independent research or an internship experience while being mentored by a member of the faculty with experience and expertise in an area of environmental science and studies.  Students can begin in the junior year by registering for tutorial credit (BIOL-300) and/or as seniors in the senior thesis.  Students will also enroll in the course Communicating Science to help students develop communication and writing skills via their own senior thesis research topics.
