Muslim apathy to US witch-hunt

WHEN Rep. Peter King from New York's Long Island has championed a Congressional Hearing into "the extent of radicalization in the American Muslim community and that community's response" reminiscent of the McCarthy's House Un-American Activities Committee, isn't it about time that the Arab League or the OIC held hearings into America's un-Islamic activities?

Ten years have passed since the 9/11 tragedy when Muslims in the US were rounded up in their thousands and incarcerated without access to lawyers or loved ones. Since, Muslims have been made to pay a terrible price for the actions of 19 fanatics who in no way represent Islam or its values.  Afghanistan and Iraq were bombed and invaded as a direct consequence.  Over a million Muslim men, women and children have been killed in those countries, untold numbers maimed, widowed and orphaned.

Innocent Muslims have been humiliated and tortured in Bagram, Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo. Some were abducted off the streets of Europe when they were hooded and chained before being flown to third countries prepared to do the CIA's torturing dirty work. Women and young children are still being bombed by US drones in Afghanistan despite the heartfelt pleas of President Hamid Karzai. Yet, instead of apologizing for its crimes against the world's 1.5 billion Muslims, Congress has launched into an anti-Islamic witch-hunt.

I wonder how those worthy gentlemen in Washington would react if, say, Egypt, where some 11 percent of the population is Coptic Christian, were to embark on a similar official demonizing of Christians for crimes committed by Americans of shared faith in Arab lands.

As Donald Rumsfeld boasted to Piers Morgan on CNN last week when asked if he had any regrets, there have been no repeat performances of 9/11. He's right. The biggest victims of terrorist attacks are Muslims themselves and, indeed.

Congress should never have blessed Peter King's divisive, hate-mongering endeavor, billed by King "to establish and show the American people that there is a real threat of Al-Qaeda recruiting and also homegrown terrorists radicalizing the Muslim community." If there is any radicalization of Muslim communities in the West, it is prompted by America's unjust wars and slurs heaped upon Muslims by King and his ilk. Singling out one faith for investigation runs contrary to America's stated democratic values and its much-touted constitution.

Resulting from the hearing, the Council for American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), an advocacy and lobbying group set up to protect the interests of American Muslims, was besmirched as “a terrorist organization” that collaborates with outlaw groups such as Hamas. That ridiculous unsubstantiated allegation was countered by Los Angeles Sheriff Leroy Baca who said, "If CAIR is a criminal organization prosecute them and bring them to trial."

US Democratic Rep. for California's 12th Congressional District Jackie Speier was hissed and booed when she condemned the hearing as being "grossly incomplete" and suggested that in addition to investigating Islamic radicalism, a Christian terrorist organization called The Army of God should also come under scrutiny.

In fact, the former activities of Peter King himself should be looked into. An enthusiastic supporter of the IRA in its murderous heyday, King announced in the 1980s "If civilians are killed in an attack on a military installation it is certainly regrettable, but I will not morally blame the IRA for it," and he was shown out of a Belfast court room during an IRA murder trial for being "an obvious collaborator."

When taken to task for his murky terrorist-supporting past, King points out that the IRA never committed terrorist acts within US borders (in other words, to hell with America's British ally) and likens the IRA to the Israeli Irgun which used extreme violence to consolidate a Jewish homeland. He would not, however, accept that same argument if it were used to defend methods used by Hamas to retrieve the stolen Palestinian homeland.

Peter King's despicable congressional hearing smacks of America's usual double standards and hypocrisy when it comes to Muslims and Arabs. As the world witnessed during the Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions, Arabs, whether Muslim or Christian, want the same things as their counterparts in the West - economic, social and political change. Among all the millions of North African demonstrators there was no burning of American flags or even displays of anti-Israeli sentiment.

I was gratified to note messages left by surprised Americans under Egypt's revolutionary music video "Sout El Horiya" (Sound of Freedom) on YouTube showing people from all walks of life in Tahrir Square singing along when the uprising was in full swing. One of those messages read, "Look at those faces. Those are the kind of people I would like to get to know."

It was interesting, too, to find protesters in Wisconsin demonstrating against a bar on union collective bargaining carrying banners that read, "Fight like an Egyptian." Peter King and his bigoted cohorts aren't getting with the program. Labeling Muslims as freedom and democracy-hating fanatics is not only old news but is also proven to have been falsely manufactured news.

What mystifies me is the lack of reaction by Muslim and Arab leaderships to such continuous physical and verbal US attacks on their own people. Predominantly Muslim countries supply America and its allies in Europe with oil and gas, host numerous US bases. Collectively, they have vast wealth, huge armies and state-of-the-art warships and airplanes. Yet, they behave as if they have no geopolitical clout at all.

It seems to me that Arab states have been apologetic and obliging enough relative to 9/11 in which they had no part. Instead, they should be holding the US to account for its crimes and slurs against Muslims, both past and current. Muslim people need defending. When oh when will the 22 member states of the Arab League and the 56 member states of the OIC that are supposed to promote Muslim solidarity be up to the task?

If the Arabs/Muslims take action against Americans, that will make it easier to persuade the American people to take up Biblical Christianity. So yeah, go ahead and let's see what happens. Though I seriously don't think Arabs are that stupid to think they can take on Biblical Christianity and win.

Excellent point. Organisations purporting to represent Muslims and having membership of Muslim majority countries and organisations need to speak up, quickly, consistently and in public. The King hearings were designed to and will result in hate-mongering and preaching to the anti-Muslim, bigoted choir whose reach now extends beyond the blogosphere. Perhaps the reason for the silence of these Muslim organisations and governments is that a good number of them are client governments, and the meaningful defense of Islam and Muslims is not a part of their portfolios. Shame all around.

Many rulers of Arab countries depend on the US to survive. Therefore they would be the last ones to question America about injustice to a segment of its population.

As for the OIC, is is a toothless organization with no defined goal.

Dear Linda: Joe McCarthy was a Senator, he chaired the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. The House Un-American Activities Committee was a separate Committee in the House of Representatives, chaired by Martin Dies, Jr. Check your spelling and your facts.

Linda you just do not get it. The King hearings is about how the Muslim community in America is being bombarded by radical Islam with families losing their sons to this terrorist style crowd. In the Muslim world the same thing goes on as evidenced by the Kingdom publishing pictures and names 85 Saudis that have joined these forces causing undue pain to their families for joining such an organization. It is about how to help stop this type of radicalization and how others can help the families who are being affected by such brain washing. Unfortunately others in America are tying like you to make this a western versus Islam issue which is not true. Even U. Madha was singing the praise of the ACLU for being involved, but, the ACLU is against all forms of regilion, openly supports homosexuality of men and women which is against Islam and Christianity. When the parents told the tales of how their sons were recruited by internet brain washing and then killed in foreign lands it was heart breaking to a lot of Americans as they see it the same way. One must remember that Al Qaeda declared war on America killing not just Christians, Jewish or Buddist, but, many Muslims at work on. Tell me that this is allowed under Islam.

How many organizations for minorities exist in Muslim Majority countrires ? Does KSA have any ? Muslims countries are in the throes of massive upheavels. If Islam is the answer, my question is whose islam ? there are so many intepretations! The taleban have their own and will kill/die for it. WE discrimnate against each other, forget minorities.

As a muslim in the US ( i also was i nthe UK for 7 years) , i have never faced any discrimination. The hearings in Congress are important and draw the spotlight on us and our flaws. Lets deal with it instead of screaming ISlamophobia or injustice. Muslims hardly allow minorities in their own countries to say anything. What hippocrisy!

Linda Heard is a bit short on facts and long on wishful thinking. The Arabs need to sell their oil to survive. They manufacture next to nothing and must import virtually everything that they need for a decent life including food, medicines and technology. The West and everyone else buys oil. The Arabs are not exactly giving it away. If they cut the West off, they in turn would cut the Arabs off from all supplies. Those supplies include products made from oil, including gasoline. How long can people survive without the basics of life, much less luxuries?

There have been tens of thousands of terror attacks since 9/11. Plenty of those were against the West. Why is it that the terrorists all invoke Islam and quote religious texts? Why is it that Muslims overlook those and the fact that most of the victims were Muslims?

@ Ashton Dunn, what the heck is Biblical Christianity? Is there any other kind? Christianity does NOT call for violence in any shape or form. Ever hear of, <turn the="" other="" cheek?="">

I would like to submit the following: To promote and establish a partnership with the Muslims community, Leroy D. Baca, Sheriff, County of Los Angeles, established a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Outreach Program in 2007, which later became the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Muslim Community Affairs Unit. He appointed Sergeant Muawiya Mike Abdeen and Deputy Sheriff Sherif Morsi as the officers in charge of this unit that performs twofold responsibility of building trust and understanding between the Muslim community and the Sheriff Department, and training the Sheriff Department staff on cultural sensitivity about Muslims and Islam. The Los Angeles County Sheriff Department became a model of cooperation between the Muslim community and Sheriff Department Muslim Community Affairs Unit. Many other cities in the United States emulated the model set up by Sheriff Lee Baca. The Congress in Washington became cognizant of the success of the cooperation between Muslim and the Los Angeles Sheriff Department. The House Committee on Homeland Security of the congress invited Sheriff Lee Baca to Washington to learn more about his model. Muawiya Mike Abdeen accompanied Sheriff Lee Baca to Washington to attend the congressional meeting. At the hearing of the House Committee on Homeland Security on March 17, 2010, Sheriff Lee Baca testified and said, "Americans, particularly elected officials, should not claim Islam supports terrorism. This is counter-productive to trust. It plays into the terrorist strategy that the West is against Islam. At this time in our history, with billions of dollars being spent on a war against terror, our nation should ask that all Americans follow President Obama's example and be the instrument of goodwill to Muslims throughout the world. "It is my belief that the average American has the potential to be our best ambassador of goodwill.
However, senators, members of congress, governors, mayors, boards of supervisors, sheriffs, police chiefs, scholars, scientists, and laborers and their leaders must set the example with a desire to visit mosques and communicate with Muslims, worldwide, in the quest of better understanding Islam. Extremists are what they are, but they cannot thrive or survive in a world that is not indifferent."
During the hearing, Congressman Mark Souder attacked Sheriff Baca and asked him about his working relationship with Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and his attendance at the 10 CAIR fundraising dinners. Sheriff Baca responded: "And I'll be there 10 more times." He added, ". . .for you to associate me somehow through some circuitous attack on CAIR, is not only inappropriate, it is un-American."
After the hearing, Sheriff Baca said: ". . .when a member of Congress is that misinformed, you gotta question whether or not they understand what their constitutional obligations are when it comes to public safety."
Mark Souder, Congressman from Indiana resigned on May 18, 2010 from the Congress for his sexual liaison with a temporary help in his office. Sheriff Lee Baca had described him as a man who is "an amateur intelligence officer." Souder proved that he has no intelligence. He proved that he is a bad and a filthy evangelist. Souder has no decency, no etiquette and no morals. He represents the ugly side of America; a moral coward. That is why hundreds of thousands of Americans think that terrified congressman Peter King will also go into oblivion like his colleague Mark Souder.

No doubt that the US and the rest of the world would like to hold Muslims to account for their crimes against humanity, especially their own people and for their slurs against nonMuslims, many of which are uttered everyday here.

Calling nonMuslims kuffaars and western culture filth; stating that their women are whores; trying to justify terror because of Israel; blaming everything that happens to Muslims on others does not endear Muslims to anyone.

When hundreds of millions of muslims begin marching, protesting and actually doing something against terror you all can get back to us. In the meantime, there will be investigations as to why so many Muslims are being radicalized.

Those Muslims who do not like it should look to themselves.
