A large audience gathered at Dar Al-Hekma College on Jan. 19 and 20 for the 16th Senior Students’ Exhibition of its Interior Design Program.

The exhibition titled, “Instruments of Light,” symbolized the interior design students’ experience in college and showcased 11 exceptionally creative interior design projects — all of which a clear vision.

“The purpose of the exhibition is to encourage students to creatively reflect what they studied through graduation projects,” said Dr. Suhair Al-Qurashi, dean of Dar Al-Hekma College. “The title we chose explains the beauty of light since it is able to pass through buildings, spaces and holes. Light can also enter through the decorative designs and reverse them to operate.”

Abdulaziz Al-Khudairi, deputy governor of Makkah region, established the exhibition where each designer notified him about their projects and their personal background.

The displayed projects included a vocational training center for the disabled, a pensioners club, an equestrian club, a driving center for women, a museum and a jewelry center. In addition, the exhibition contained redesigned projects for existing buildings in Jeddah.

Lujain Kamel’s project was for a breast cancer association located in Jeddah. “The building, which will host the breast cancer patients looks like a ribbon, and I chose the main colors to be light pink, gray and white. It will be a place where patients can receive psychological support and share their experiences. I also added several sections, such as a walking area, so that patients can enjoy sports, yoga, as well as receive healing,” said Kamel.

Dima Al-Muhawesh redesigned the Mohammed bin Abdulaziz International airport in Al-Madinah to improve it. “This airport should have international standards and should be smooth and comfortable. So, I added a VIP lounge, shops and many entertainment areas. I also included special departments for disabled people, such as sitting and information sections within the normal areas. This area contains several levels, which all people can use, and allows for the disabled to ask for directions and help through the screen,” she explained.

Salma Al-Agil designed a jewelry institution whose purpose is to educate customers. “Most women in the Gulf buy jewelry without knowing about its originality. My concept is to educate women, as well as display different jewelries. All the lines and decorations are not straight; rather, each section is designed like a diamond. I also added an auction room inside,” she said.

Linda Al-Tabba’a designed a natural boutique hotel that depends on high technology and speed. “The boutique hotel provides all the users an unforgettable experience in practicality and design. I created a car display that’s made from glass and metal, which can rotate and move up and down. The car is also changeable according to the sponsor,” she explained.

Hind Al-Selimi designed a museum for King Abdulaziz Aal Saud located in King Abdullah Economic City, which would target foreigners. That way, tourists and international businessmen can visit this museum to find out about the Kingdom’s history and founder.

“The museum would be divided into eight chambers where each one would be equipped with special screens to provide data on the Aal Saud family. The first chamber would talk about King Abdulaziz’s first ten years and childhood; the second about the first ten years of King Abdulaziz’s life stages; the third would highlight the king’s life in the desert; the fourth covering when he went back to the city with his family; the fifth would talk about the establishment of Saudi Arabia; the sixth would cover the international events that he attended and presidents’ quotes about him; the seventh would narrate his life inside his palace, such as how he deals with his family and parents. And, finally, the eighth would be about the King’s death,” she explained.
