Cost of Education Budgets

Loan Disbursement Example

Application Requirements

Eligibility for need-based financial aid is calculated by subtracting each student's expected family contribution and other resources from the average cost of education budget at Georgetown.

Need-based financial aid is available to applicants who can meet the nationally recognized guidelines for "demonstrated financial need". If the cost of attending Georgetown University is greater than your expected family contribution from income and assets plus other resources, you will have demonstrated need and you may be eligible for need-based financial aid.

FAFSA Requirements

Students applying for financial aid for cohort 1 will file the 2010/2011 FAFSA.

Students applying for financial aid for cohort 2 will file the 2011/2012 FAFSA

Students applying for financial aid for cohort 3 will file the 2011/2012 FAFSA

Average Costs

The cost of education budgets show the average costs of graduate study at Georgetown University for the academic year. These are the “expense budgets” that Georgetown uses to measure your eligibility for need-based financial aid awards, and for loans and other financing options. Eligible applicants are offered need-based financial aid to meet the average costs included in this "expense budget.” Most supplemental loan programs limit borrowing to the average cost of attendance minus any other financial aid awards.

What is Included

A typical graduate student's average cost of attendance includes the cost of full time or part time tuition (depending on which track you choose), the mandatory equipment fee, an allowance for any student loan fees paid, plus an allowance for average living expenses, books, and a travel/transportation allowance.

What is Not Included

The standard cost of attendance/expense budget conservatively reflects the amount of funds required to attend Georgetown University. Of course, depending on lifestyle choices, your actual expenses may be greater or less than the standard cost of attendance. In addition, the standard cost of attendance does not usually include personal expenses for computer hardware, software, and monthly service contracts, telephone service, new clothing, automobiles, and furniture or appliance rentals.

Living Expenses

The living expenses allowance in the standard cost of attendance for graduate students reflects the average cost for rent and food over the academic year based on data provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics for Washington, D.C.

Books and Supplies

The allowance for books and supplies used in the standard cost of attendance is based on data reported by the Georgetown University Bookstore.

Travel

The travel allowance in the cost of attendance is based on the average lowest cost for commuting expenses.  It also includes the mandatory trip to Georgetown's campus.  Where this allotment shows in your budget will be determined by which program you are enrolled in.  The allowance for each individual student will vary depending on the distance between the reported “home” permanent residence and the District of Columbia.

Allowances for Federal Loan Fees

The processing fees deducted from federal loan proceeds may be added to your cost of attendance for the purpose of increasing your eligibility for loan funds.

Allowances for Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities may have special expenses related to their health care or living arrangements that should be included in the calculation of eligibility for federal need-based financial aid. Applicants are encouraged to discuss their individual circumstances with a Student Financial Services Counselor.
