Cricket World Cup - India v West Indies as it happened

  1. 0825 Commentary

Today in Chennai, one of the greatest sportsmen of his or any generation will attempt to reach a milestone that until recently many had not even realised existed. If seeing history in the making interests you, I reckon you might want to stick around.

  2. 0832 Commentary

The legend is question is Sachin Tendulkar, a man who has scored 32,645 runs in an Indian shirt. If he scores a century in their Group B match against West Indies at the World Cup, he will have scored 100 100s for his country. It's impossible to overstate the size of this achievement. My esteemed cricket editor Paul Grunill likenes it to "climbing Everest on top of Everest". He's rarely wrong.

  3. 0836 Commentary

I asked Tendulkar, and he said he'd only score his hundredth hundred if you lot got stuck in with chat all day long*. Here's how: text to 81111 (with 'CRICKET' at the front of your message); tweet me @Stevo_football; tweet me with the hashtag #bbcworldcup; and send an email e-mail to tms@bbc.co.uk with 'For Jonathan Stevenson' as the subject.

    * Strictly speaking, this isn't true.

  4. Contributor

From BBC Sport's Paul Grunill: "Over in Kolkata [Calcutta], 2003 semi-finalists Kenya have a lot to do to avoid going home without a single win in the tournament after Zimbabwe piled up 308-6 in the Group A 'dead rubber'. The Kenyans need something special from captain-for-the-day Steve Tikolo, who is playing his final international match."

  5. 0841 Commentary

India have won the toss in Chennai and are going to have a bat. So if Sachin Tendulkar is going to reach that landmark, it'll probably happen in the next couple of hours. Get the teas in; this is what we're here for.

  6. 0845 Commentary

So, here's where we are in the World Cup: India and West Indies have both already qualified for the quarter-finals. Actually, Windies are only 99.99% assured of their place, but they would have to receive the kicking of a lifetime today to not get through. If India win, they will finish second in Group B and will play Australia in the quarters. Windies could finish second or fourth. It's a bit complicated, really.

  7. Twitter

From MoffAloff: "Climbing Everest on top of Everest. A good analogy that. I still find it hard to get my head round a hundred 100's."

  8. BBC Test Match Special's Michael Vaughan
Contributor BBC Test Match Special's Michael Vaughan

"The England players have been away for a long time and that's not easy. The injury to Stuart Broad hasn't helped and there has been a lot of swapping and changing. But you can peak just at the right time and England are the kind of team that know they can beat anyone. They might play Sri Lanka in Colombo and they'll have to raise their game for that one."

  9. 0854 Commentary

Some team news to fill you in on - India have made two changes, with Suresh Raina replacing injured opener Virender Sehwag and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, on his home ground, coming in for left-arm fast bowler Ashish Nehra. West Indies leave out star batsman Chris Gayle, who had been an injury doubt, for Kirk Edwards, while fast bowler Kemar Roach is rested and Ravi Rampaul comes in.

  10. Commentary

From Herbie in the TMS inbox: "Is there any result that means Bangladesh would go through at the expense of West Indies?"

(From Paul Grunill) Realistically, no......I'm not a mathematician but India would have to win by, to use the vernacular, 'shed loads'.

  11. 0859 Commentary

Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir walk to the wicket in Chennai and they get a thunderous ovation from the crowd, who are already unbelievably lively. Excited? You will be. Our bid for 100 100s starts here...

  12. Commentary

From Phil, Adelaide, in the TMS inbox: "I hope India win but no 100 for the Master. That way they will play Australia, whose skipper, Ponting, said he knew he'd nicked it to Akmal yesterday. For Tendulkar, the epitomy of sportsmanship, to achieve such a milestone against his complete opposite would be delicious. Oh the polarity!"

  13. 1 over WICKET Tendulkar c Thomas b Rampaul 2

Ravi Rampaul takes the new ball and unleashes the shortest of all bouncers first up, the ball flying over Devon Thomas's head for four wides. Sachin Tendulkar - making his 450th ODI appearance to boot - gets a standing ovation for taking guard. Unprecedented acclaim. He flicks his first ball off his pads for a couple... oh my word, I've never heard silence like it, Tendulkar feathers Rampaul behind and walks, he doesn't wait for the umpire to call it, he's gone!

  14. 0907 Commentary

Unbelievable. If there's a silver lining, it's that Sachin Tendulkar's show of sportsmanship has shown that gentlemanly conduct in cricket is still alive and kicking. The appeal went up from Rampaul, the umpire hadn't decided, and Tendulkar walked without even looking. I wonder if Ricky Ponting's watching...

  15. 2 overs Commentary Ind 14-1

From deafening roar to deafening silence. It's gone a bit eerie in Chennai. Big Sulieman Benn lopes in for the second over, the left-arm spinner bang on the money, but Gambhir won't let him settle, dancing down the pitch to the last ball and whacking him over mid-wicket for four.

  16. Commentary

From Mo, London, in the TMS inbox: "Stevo, it is hard to see how anyone can get close to the little master. It's often stated that genius's also have a weakness of sort, Zidane, Schumacher etc. But this guy is one that defies that 'rule'. Class act."

  17. 3 overs Commentary Ind 17-1

Rampaul is getting some serious bounce, and I didn't even tell you who the new batter was did I? How rude. It's Virat Kohli, and he and Gambhir take three off the over with minimum fuss.

  18. 4 overs Commentary Ind 22-1

Benn comes round the wicket to Kohli, not going between umpire and stumps as I used to but around the umpire. To be fair, he's about twice the size of me, so the umpire would have to stand about 10 yards back. Over the wicket to Gambhir, who is watchful, until Benn drops short and he rocks back and cuts hard through point for four.

  19. Contributor

From BBC Sport's Paul Grunill: "To say it's all gone a bit pear-shaped for Kenya over in Kolkata is a huge understatement. They were 48-5 after 13 overs, chasing a target to 309 to beat Zimbabwe, and 39-year-old Steve Tikolo has gone for 10 in his final international innings."

  20. 5 overs Commentary Ind 28-1

Rampaul is extracting life out of this pitch as another bouncer flies past the helmet of Gambhir. He's bowling short of a length and getting it to rear and the classically moody stares of a fast bowler are there in abundance too. Gambhir nicks one that flies in the gap between first slip and gully for four, unlucky Ramps.

  21. Commentary

From Mo, London, in the TMS inbox: "There you go Stevo, that's what separates him [Tendulkar] from everyone else. There was no way they would have given that out even if they had reviewed it. Only he knew he nicked it and he walked. Century against the Aussies, hopefully."

  22. 6 overs Commentary Ind 38-1

Benn continues, this giant of a man bowling spin, he gets one to bounce on Kohli and the right-hander is beaten attempting a cut shot. But he feasts on to a fuller ball, devouring it through the covers for four... and Benn over-pitches again, Kohli once more clubbing him to the offside fence. Glorious batting, and probably the end of Benn, for now.

  23. 7 overs Commentary Ind 43-1

Windies need pace - or at least bounce - from both ends, according to Tony Cozier, the "doyen of West Indian cricket", says my colleague. Rampaul bowls a decent over but Gambhir plays a peachy shot from the fifth ball, rocking back and caressing a ball just short of a length in-between cover and point for four.

  24. 8 overs Commentary Ind 50-1

Here's that change as Andre Russell comes on for Benn. It's right-arm medium-fast and he finds a decent line and length to both batsmen straight away, conceding three singles before getting excited and bowling a bouncer that flies over poor Devon Thomas's head and runs away for four byes. Ruined the over, that.

  25. Twitter

From SleeperPService: "I wonder if Ponting watched Tendulkar walk and felt ashamed?"

    Somehow, I doubt it.

  26. 8.3 overs WICKET Gambhir c Russell b Rampaul 22

Rampaul deserves that, he's bowled impressively. Gambhir plays a strange shot - he's on the move, aggressive, and slices a short ball straight down the throat of Andre Russell at third man. He didn't have to move a yard. India 51-2 now.

  27. 9 overs Commentary Ind 53-2

Yuvraj Singh is the new batsman and, as you'd expect, he gets a pretty healthy ovation from the Chennai locals. He hasn't faced yet as the batsmen crossed, and Kohli clips a couple more past square leg.

  28. BBC Test Match Special's Michael Vaughan
Contributor BBC Test Match Special's Michael Vaughan

"You don't mind bowling at Yuvraj on a pitch with a bit of bounce."

  29. 10 overs Commentary Ind 53-2

So, Russell to Yuvraj, bouncer first up and the left-hander is forced back. He'll be expecting some chin music, no doubt. Russell pings another in short of a length and Yuvraj doesn't look entirely comfortable, a very fine maiden over.

  30. SMS

From Tony Cocozza, London: "Someone should make the point that when Tendulkar fails India often win. When he scores a century they often lose."

  31. 11 overs Commentary Ind 58-2

West Indies take the bowling powerplay, as is standard, and Rampaul fizzes in a short bouncer that Yuvraj tries to flay away and misses completely. He has more luck next ball, though - a ball back of a length enables him to step back and bludgeon the ball through mid-wicket for four. There's the crowd again.

  32. 12 overs DROPPED CATCH Ind 67-2

Russell continues and Yuvraj rifles a cover drive through the offside for four top-class runs, no point running for that one. The Windies could do without him staying in for the next 20 overs. From the last ball Yuvraj fends away another short ball, ugly shot to gully where Darren Sammy dives, gets two hands to the ball but cannot cling on. How costly could that be?

  33. 13 overs DROPPED CATCH Ind 70-2

Darren Sammy must feel like he owes his team and brings himself on. Kohli clips a single off his pads before Yuvraj gets two into the leg side. Not much bounce for Sammy, who is a good deal slower. Yuvraj drives the last ball straight back to Sammy, it's high and Sammy can only get the fingertips of his right hand to it and can't cling on to that either. Drama.

  34. Commentary

From Kev, Wellington, in the TMS inbox: "With the DRS now here to stay, should there be a directive from the ICC to umpires to make positive 'out' decisions against those batsmen who choose not to walk (not mentioning any names - i cant be bothered to name the Australian team) and force them into making a decision? It would surely encourage more sportsmanlike behaviour as demonstrated by Sachin and Adam Gilchrist and any 'howlers' would still be rectified."

  35. 14 overs Commentary Ind 73-2

A frustrated-looking Russell rages in, like a big ball of energy, but his radar has gone off a little and both Kohli and Yuvraj are playing him quite comfortably. Yuvraj hammers the last ball of the over straight to Devon Smith at point, his timing's not quite right on that occasion.

  36. 15 overs Commentary Ind 81-2

Sammy is clipped away for a couple by Kohli before Yuvraj seizes on a short ball that pops up outside off stump, the left-hander pirouetting in his crease and swinging it away through the leg side for four. Bowling powerplay over, for what it's worth.

  37. Twitter

    From prasad_s: "Common misconception. Sachin's ODI century record: Total ODI Centuries: 48, Won: 33, Tied/NR: 2, Lost: 13. Win %:68.75... Sachin's Test Century record: Total Centuries: 51, Won: 20, Drawn: 20, Lost: 11. Loss %: 21.56."

  38. 16 overs Commentary Ind 86-2

Leg spinner Devendra Bishoo, who bowled wonderfully against England the other day to take 3-34, comes on and Yuvraj has a look before pulling a short ball into the leg side for a single. Like the looks of this boy Bishoo, who elicits an outside edge from Kohli off the last delivery, the ball running away for four. Moral victory for Bishoo.

  39. 17 overs DRINKS BREAK Ind 89-2

Yuvraj is looking for it now and he goes on the drive again to Sammy, but the Windies captain has got cover on the off side fence. Just three singles off the over, you feel Yuvraj is bubbling under here. Drinks.

  40. Contributor

From BBC Sport's Paul Grunill: "They're heading for an early finish in Kolkata with Kenya slumping to 110-8 against Zimbabwe in the 28th over - seven of the wickets falling to spinners. Zimbabwe, if you've been paying attention, made 308-6."

  41. Commentary

From Jaco, Pretoria, in the TMS inbox: "Regarding the TMS producer's tweet that there were "no heroics from the little master today", I disagree. We did see heroics. Not the kind of heroics that the Ponting's of this world would understand or appreciate, but heroics nonetheless."

  42. 18 overs Commentary Ind 91-2

Bishoo continues. My editor Paul reckons he sounds like a cross between the noise you make when you sneeze and what the person next to you says as a result of said sneeze. Bang on the money, two off it.

  43. 19 overs Commentary Ind 95-2

Sammy continues to trundle in without too much happening. Kohli has been quiet just recently, gone into his shell a little. Still got 36 from 44 balls, mind. Get in touch, will you? Text 81111, tweet @Stevo_football or with the hashtag #bbcworldcup or send an e-mail to tms@bbc.co.uk with 'For Jonathan Stevenson' as the subject.

  44. 20 overs Commentary Ind 97-2

Bishoo finds his line and length almost unerringly, very impressive for an inexperienced leg spinner. He's not giving Kohli or Yuvraj anything to hit, the left-hander missing a drive, almost nicked that to Devon Thomas. Three overs for nine so far for Bishoo.

  45. 21 overs Commentary Ind 104-2

Sammy is on the money and into a nice rhythm, until Yuvraj takes two steps down the wicket, swings those powerful arms of his and plants the West Indies captain miles and miles over long-on and into the crowd. Effortless, sublime, scintillating. A bouncer ends the over, Yuvraj getting the heck out of the way.

  46. SMS

From Kartikey, Cheltenham: "Kohli is playing a very Rahul Dravid-like innings."

  47. 22 overs Commentary Ind 110-2

Now Yuvraj goes after Bishoo, slogging a sweep into the air and to the square leg boundary for four. Bishoo keeps his cool and there are three more singles off the over. Signs of intent from Yuvraj.

  48. 23 overs Commentary Ind 114-2

Big-hitting middle order batsman Kieron Pollard is on to bowl some medium pace for the West Indies and Kohli scampers through for a quick single just as his stumps are thrown down. Four singles off the over, the last ball rearing unpleasantly off a length at Yuvraj, who reacts with genuine surprise.

  49. 24 overs Commentary Ind 118-2

Bishoo draws a false shot from Yuvraj, the left-hander clipping a shot into the leg side and into the air, the ball falling just short of mid-wicket. Four off the over. A Mexican wave starts up in Chennai - it's not that dull. Behave.

  50. Commentary

From Chris, Stoke-on-Trent, in the TMS inbox: "Re: comments on batsmen walking - players are far more likely to walk when they've nicked it while the DRS is in place as if it's an obvious deviation the umpire's original decision will be changed anyway."

  51. 25 overs Commentary Ind 123-2

Pollard is steered intelligently down to third man for four by Virat Kohli, lovely touch that. The big man recovers well though, four dot balls to end the over, five from it. Kohli has 46 from 62, Yuvraj 43 from 58 balls.

  52. Twitter

England's Graeme Swann: "I envy all of you today who are having a lamb roast dinner. When I get home I plan on necking a pint of mint sauce."

  53. 26 overs Commentary Ind 134-2

Finally the pressure of bowling to Yuvraj gets to Bishoo. His first ball is too full and Yuvraj's quick feet turn it into a full toss, the left-hander hammering it into the leg side for four. Next ball is flat and down leg side, Yuvraj swivelling and spanking it down to fine leg for four more, that's brought up his fourth fifty of the World Cup. Three more runs off the over, Yuvraj hogs the strike, and 11 off that one.

  54. Commentary

From Andrew in the TMS inbox: "Everyone is saying how much Sachin showed sportsmanship today, has everyone forgotten what happened two weeks ago between England & South Africa, Jacques Kallis ASKING Matt Prior if he caught it because he knew he nicked it but the umpire hadn't even moved, Prior said yes so Kallis walked, yet no-one seems to mention it."

  55. 27 overs Commentary Ind 137-2

Pollard tries to becalm Yuvraj, bowling just short of a length and Yuvraj popping one up that stops on him just short of Devon Smith at point. He swings his arms next ball and takes two to the cover boundary, three from the over.

  56. 28 overs Commentary Ind 148-2

Sulieman Benn comes back on for Bishoo and he is a touch short first ball, Yuvraj leaning back and cutting with immense power for four. Benn then over-pitches and Yuvraj creams him gloriously through the covers for four more, he's racing here, no mistake. Benn is usually a Windies banker, but his four overs have gone for 32.

  57. Contributor

From BBC Sport's Paul Grunill: "It's all done and dusted in Kolkata - Kenya all out for 147 and Zimbabwe the winners by 161 runs. But how will Zimbabwe fare in Test cricket when they return to the five-day game later this year?"

  58. BBC Test Match Special's Vic Marks
Contributor BBC Test Match Special's Vic Marks

"This is starting to look ominous for West Indies. There could be mayhem in the last 10 overs here."

  59. 29 overs Commentary Ind 155-2

Pollard jogs in, over-pitching as Kohli this time hammers him away to the mid-wicket boundary for a one-bounce four and that has brought up his half-century, from 64 balls. These boys have now put on 104 in just over 20 overs.

  60. 30 overs Commentary Ind 160-2

Double the score after 30 overs and West Indies are looking at a run chase and a half. Andre Russell comes back on with the Windies really needing to break this stand and Yuvraj looks exhausted, so umpire Steve Davis calls for a drink mid-over, strangely. Five off the over.

  61. Commentary

From Jackie, Melbourne, in the TMS inbox: "Why can't I follow the commentary of this game, as a neutral, without hearing the Aussie bashing? We are not even playing for goodness sake! What is it with you Poms, this obsession with beating Australia and knocking us. You know, we actually kinda like the the English over here. We enjoy your eccentricties and especially enjoy how uptight you get when you are supporting your team!"

Years and years and years and years of losing. That explain it?

  62. 31 overs Commentary Ind 165-2

Windies turn to Rampaul in their desperation for a wicket, an obvious choice as he's taken the only two to fall so far. But these two are batting like they are in a dream, completely unperturbed by anything going on around them. Five singles off the over.

  63. Commentary

From Tim, Marlow, in the TMS inbox: "Stevo, listening to a match featuring Sulieman Benn reminds me of the time that an elderly relative of mine (whose identity is withheld to protect the innocent) wondered aloud whether he was any relation to Tony Benn. Quite possibly the silliest sporting question I have ever heard."

  64. SMS

From Rob, Skipton: "All this talk about walking and Ponting, why was nobody else incensed when England played SA and De Villiers didnt walk when he had been bowled?! Embarrassing."

  65. 32 overs Commentary Ind 173-2

Russell starts his sixth over with a leg side wide, before Kohli pulls him to deep mid-wicket for a single. Yuvraj takes two with an effortless flick off his pads and gets two more to extra-cover, lovely shot off the back foot. Eight off it.

  66. BBC Test Match Special's Michael Vaughan
Contributor BBC Test Match Special's Michael Vaughan

"Let's be honest, Ricky stood and the umpire gave him not out. Who's at fault? In the right world you'd like Ponting to walk off but as has been proved you can get a nick and it not be given. It's great to see Sachin but you have to feel for Ricky Ponting. He's going through a rough patch so he stands and hopes he's going to get away with one and he doesn’t."

  67. 32.2 overs WICKET Kohli b Rampaul 59

It's the Ravi Rampaul Show for West Indies, the paceman doing the trick for his captain, a straight one nips back in a touch and as Virat Kohli tries to smash it into next week he loses his castle. Great partnership of 122 is ended.

  68. Commentary

From Mark, TMS inbox: "Re Jackie in Melbourne. Don't be so defensive, people are not having a go at Australia, they are having a go at Ricky Ponting. Last time I looked they are not the same thing. Which must come as a comfort."

  69. 33 overs Commentary Ind 176-3

India captain MS Dhoni comes in and he gets a pretty enormous ovation too. Yuvraj takes advantage of the wicket to dash off the pitch for a minute as everyone else takes drinks. Dhoni is off the mark straight away to long-on, good over though, three off it and Rampaul has 3-38 from eight overs.

  70. 34 overs Commentary Ind 180-3

Remember, if India win today they will face holders Australia in the quarter-finals. Dhoni pushes Russell to Sammy at cover but it goes straight through the captain's legs - nutmegged - and they take a single. Four off the over, very much calm before the storm. Yuvraj has 81 from 91 balls.

  71. Twitter

From maytokun: "It may look ominous, as it did against South Africa until India lost nine wickets for 27runs... this is cricket."

  72. 35 overs Commentary Ind 188-3

The ball is changed, as is mandatory after 34 overs, but Yuvraj continues, his flashing blade sending a Kieron Pollard ball outside off stump to the deep backward point fence for four. This is now Yuvraj's highest score in World Cups, would you believe? He clubs Pollard to long-on, one bounce to Devon Smith, who was mulling over a dive and attempted catch for a split second.

  73. 36 overs Commentary Ind 192-3

Devendra Bishoo is back on and pushing it through a bit more, he's probably a bit worried about floating it up and being thwacked out the ground, can't blame him. Four singles off the over and he'd have settled for that, for sure.

  74. 37 overs Commentary Ind 195-3

Pollard continues to amble in, both Yuvraj and Dhoni are circumspect for now, gearing themselves up for a heroic finish. Dhoni cuts fiercely for a couple off the last ball, while Yuvraj is down on his knees at the other end, he looks like he's really struggling, dehydration maybe.

  75. Commentary

From AJ in the TMS inbox: "Re Mark (below) - Ricky Ponting has a 34-1 World Cup record as Captain. English would dream of such a cricketer, with that sort of record."

  76. 38 overs Commentary Ind 203-3

Nothing like a bit of English-Aussie banter, is there? Amazingly, no mention of the Ashes from anyone so far... Anyway, Bishoo continues to wheel away, probably relieved he's bowling now and not in seven, eight overs' time. Having said that, Yuvraj sweeps a poor ball down leg side for four. He's now 96 not out.

  77. BBC Test Match Special's Geoff Boycott
Contributor BBC Test Match Special's Geoff Boycott

"Bishoo is bowling well. He's not just tossing it up there and letting them have a whack at it, he's bowling a lot of flatter, quicker balls."

  78. 39 overs Commentary Ind 209-3

Dhoni sends his Chennai public wild by dancing down the track to Pollard and larruping him over mid-wicket for four, brutal shot. He then steals a single into the off side to get Yuvraj, on 96, on strike. Yuvraj garners a single of his own, toying with the crowd, six off the over.

  79. 40 overs Commentary Ind 212-3

Bishoo sizzles a couple of quick, flat leggies into Dhoni and he's not giving them any room to have a crash. Three singles off the over - two to Yuvraj, who is now 99 not out and on strike. When he reaches three figures, he's going to swing for everything.

  80. 40.3 overs THAT'S 100 Yuvraj Singh 100 not out

Yuvraj tries to cut Pollard but misses - Pollard goes up for the caught behind, but his wicket-keeper remains motionless. After driving Pollard to cover, Yuvraj finally brings up his century, playing off the back foot to long-off. Brilliant innings from Yuvraj, exactly what India needed after losing a couple of early wickets. It's his 13th ODI hundred, first in World Cups, and Chennai goes mental.

  81. 41 overs Commentary Ind 216-3

Dhoni edges streakily and gets a couple after a mis-field from Benn, long way for him to get down in all fairness. And still we wait for the carnage...

  82. Twitter

From tommoore66: "Re AJ - I could have captained the Aussie sides of that era. He had an top team to lead. It didn't matter who tossed the coin."

  83. 41.4 overs WICKET Dhoni st Thomas b Bishoo 22

Lovely stuff from Bishoo and he deserves that wicket big time. He floats one up to the India captain, it's around his eyeline and Dhoni's eyes light up, he dances down the pitch but is beaten in flight, missing the ball and not getting back quickly enough as Devon Thomas whips the bails off.

  84. 42 overs Commentary Ind 219-4

Suresh Raina, the 24-year-old left-hander, walks to the crease for the first time in this World Cup. He gets off the mark with a single and Bishoo finishes with 1-48 from his 10 overs, good effort.

  85. BBC Test Match Special's Geoff Boycott
Contributor BBC Test Match Special's Geoff Boycott

"If Yuvraj Singh was a horse, you'd say he was knackered. He's run his race."

  86. 43 overs Commentary Ind 223-4

Pollard continues and Raina picks up a couple to the cover-point boundary, nice stroke. A ball from Pollard bounces on Raina and Devon Thomas cannot collect, the wicket-keeper falling to the ground straight after, looks like he's picked up an injury, possibly his right thumb. Yuvraj takes advantage of another rest to drape a towel around his head and sit on the floor. Thomas is patched up, and after a five-minute break we continue. Both men are struggling.

  87. BBC Test Match Special's Geoff Boycott
Contributor BBC Test Match Special's Geoff Boycott

"Harbhajan is going to enjoy bowling on this. He likes a bit of bounce."

  88. 43.5 overs WICKET Raina c Rampaul b Sammy 4

Captain Darren Sammy is back on for West Indies and Yuvraj is well enough to demolish a long-hop miles back into the crowd for six. After three singles Raina then perishes, swinging a Sammy ball straight to Ravi Rampaul at short fine leg. Can't keep Rampaul out of the game.

  89. 44 overs Commentary Ind 233-4

West Indies have done well here, so far they have avoided the carnage the Chennai crowd was expecting India to create. Yusuf Pathan comes in, about time he showcased his class to the World Cup.

  90. 45 overs WICKET Yuvraj 110 c and b Pollard 113 (Ind 240-6)

Pollard comes in for his last over, he's done a decent job with his wibbly-wobblers. Yuvraj drives through extra-cover for a couple more, good fielding on the boundary from Darren Bravo. Yuvraj drives the last ball straight back to Pollard, who makes no mistake holding on to the catch. Lovely innings, but boy was Yuvraj struggling towards the end.

  91. Commentary

From Graham in the TMS inbox: "It is now evident that England's erratic progress in the group stages was all part of a masterly plan to avoid Australia in the quarter-finals."

  92. 46 overs Commentary Ind 247-6

Now India take the batting powerplay, as we enter the final five overs, so West Indies can only have a maximum of three fielders outside the 30-metre circle. Andre Russell is back and it's short, outside off stump, so Pathan helps it on its way past the keeper for four, very fine shot in every sense. Harbhajan gets off the mark with a single off his first ball before Pathan pulls hard but Pollard cuts it off running around at long-on, top fielding.

  93. 46.4 overs WICKET Pathan b Rampaul 11

The excellent Ravi Rampaul is back into the attack for his last two overs and Pathan squeezes a single off the inside edge before Harbhajan does the same. Pathan drives into the Chennai night sky but the ball almost plugs in the outfield and Sammy keeps him down to two, Rampaul then firing in a superb yorker that cleans up Pathan's stumps next ball. Lovely delivery.

  94. 47 overs Commentary Ind 252-7

India are blowing their chances of a big total here, though with Chris Gayle left out by West Indies it certainly won't be an easy run chase. Chennai local Ravichandran Ashwin is next man in and he should be run out taking a single, Sammy missing with his throw from mid-off. Rampaul then sneaks one through Harbhajan's defences, just misses everything, great over.

  95. 47.5 overs WICKET Harbhajan c Pollard b Russell 3

Ashwin almost plays on to Russell, the ball somehow missing his stumps and flying past Devon Thomas for four. Bishoo then pulls off a super stop at cover-point to deny Ashwin another four, before Harbhajan somehow flicks a Russell full toss in the air to long-on, where Kieron Pollard races in off the boundary and dives full-length, taking a wonderful catch. He picks up an injury in the process, though, maybe dislocating a finger, and hurries the physio on to click it back into place. Phew, it's all happening.

  96. 48 overs Commentary Ind 260-8

India have only gone and collapsed again, haven't they? It's awful quiet in Chennai right now. Ashwin takes a single off the last ball of the over, so new batter Zaheer Khan won't have to face yet.

  97. 48.5 overs WICKET Zaheer b Rampaul 5

Ravi Rampaul has never taken a five-for in ODIs and he spears a yorker to Zaheer's stumps, the tailender getting his bat down in time. Zaheer then gets his back foot out of the way and blitzes the ball through the covers for four, but Rampaul gets one through again and he's bowled him! That's a Michelle for Rampaul, great effort.

  98. 49 overs Commentary Ind 267-9

India are in danger of being bowled out yet again here. Strange World Cup gets strangers. Munaf Patel gets off the mark with a single and Ravi Rampaul ends with 5-51 from his 10 overs.

  99. 49.1 overs WICKET Munaf b Russell 1

Andre Russell takes the last wicket with the first ball of the last over, Munaf hanging his bat out to dry and the ball getting through his poor defences, cleaning him up.

  100. 1244 Commentary

India are bowled out for 268 in 49.1 overs. West Indies need 269 to beat the hosts.

"It's a spirited performance by West Indies. Russell, Bishoo - we'd never heard of them before the World Cup, but it's good because it's a sign that perhaps they are better stocked for players than we thought. I'd still have India as favourites to win the match, mind."

  102. Commentary

West Indies bowler Ravi Rampaul after collecting 5-51 on his World Cup debut: "I went out and did my best for the team. Earlier I had a lot of bounce, like with the first delivery and then I bowled line and length and it paid off. [Towards the end] I got a bit of reverse swing and bowled a few yorkers and it worked. It's an awesome crowd and I like the atmosphere."

  103. 1252 Commentary

Great effort from Ravi Ramps, that. I'm gonna lie low for a while, but you won't miss the start of the West Indies run chase, oh no. From BBC Sport's Paul Grunill: "News of a change in the New Zealand camp, with experienced seam bowler Daryl Tuffey drafted in ahead of the quarter-finals to replace Hamish Bennett, who has an ankle injury. Shame that - I liked what I saw of Bennett at he start of the tournament but he is one for the future."

  106. 1315 Commentary

No rest for the wicked. Off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is opening the bowling for India and we're getting under way.

  107. 1 over Commentary WI 1-0

Ashwin bowls three long-hops and gets away with all of them, Devon Smith steadfastly refusing to play an aggressive shot in the face of such dire bowling. Kirk Edwards is his partner and he blocks his first two deliveries.

  108. 2 overs Commentary WI 8-0

Zaheer Khan steams in from the other end and Smith clatters him to Kohli at backward point, good stop from the half-centurion. Smith totally misses an attemped drive before cutting late and superbly for four. Classy.

  109. 3 overs Commentary WI 14-0

Ashwin, who looks quite gangly in his action, is being cheered every ball by his home Chennai crowd, but they are silenced as Edwards caresses him through the covers for four.

  110. 4 overs Commentary WI 20-0

Zaheer is struggling a touch for line here against a left- and right-hander, just straying on to the pads. Smith plays a quite stunning drive off the front foot, straight back past the stumps for four. Pathan then throws down the stumps at the non-striker's end, umpire Simon Taufel doesn't go upstairs - but replays show he would have been out. That's unbelievable. He's a foot out, Edwards. Unbelievable.

  111. 5 overs Commentary WI 24-0

I'm still reeling from that non-decision. Ashwin squares Smith up, leading edge to cover, and India are unluckly not to have a breakthrough so far. Four off another steady over.

  113. 6 overs Commentary WI 33-0

India get Harbhajan Singh on quick-sharp and he beats Smith's outside edge with an off spinning beauty first up. Edwards takes a couple into the covers before he moseys down the pitch and blasts Harbhajan into the crowd for six over long-off. Good intent.

"A mistake from Simon Taufel. He doesn't make many but Kirk Edwards has got a reprieve on debut. There is no excuse. The technology is there. You might as well use it. I bet he does next time."

  115. 6.1 overs UMPIRE REVIEW

Anshwin hits Smith on the pad, he's not going anywhere, trapped in his crease, umpire Davis gives it not out but that looks good to me. We're going upstairs...

  116. 6.1 overs WICKET Edwards lbw b Ashwin 17

It pitches on leg and it is straightening enough to hit his pad on leg stump and be going on to hit leg stump. It's not an on-field call, that one - it's just totally out. Kirk Edwards gone, 40,000 go wild.

  117. 7 overs Commentary WI 36-1

Darren Bravo is in at three and he will have a big part to play if West Indies are going to get anywhere near this total. He's off the mark, good over from Ashwin, only three off it.

  118. 8 overs Commentary WI 39-1

Smith cuts Harbhajan hard, but Munaf gets across smartly inside the ring to prevent what might have been four. Three singles from the over, Harbhajan doing his job for Dhoni well.

  119. Commentary

From Andrew in the TMS inbox: "On the subject of Simon Taufel not reviewing the run out, I have a theory. A few years ago, he got into hot water by saying he goes on the appeal and the body language of the fielding side as to whether to give someone out or not - all part of the picture he paints to get him to his decision. Did the fact the Indians didn't appeal with any conviction and didn't really think it was out affect Taufel's dicision?"

  120. 9 overs Commentary WI 41-1

Ashwin hasn't bowled that well but the Windies are making him look unplayable. Two singles from the over, despite another long-hop in there, and he's got 1-15 from five so far.

  121. 10 overs Commentary WI 46-1

Harbhajan isn't so lucky as Smith leans back and chops him to the fence for four, too short by miles. One ball rears up at Smith and that's a false shot, would've been snaffled by a short leg if there was one.

  122. 11 overs Commentary WI 50-1

The bowling powerplay is taken immediately, as if you needed me to tell you. Ashwin continues, four more singles off the over and it's all a bit tight at the moment. "Bravo looks like a batsman, you'd have to say. That swagger, that stance," says Michael Vaughan.

  123. Commentary

From Saleh in the TMS inbox: "Simon Taufel - Anagram - "Fault is on me'."

  124. 12 overs Commentary WI 61-1

Harbhajan is wasting too many balls at the moment, one short ball forced into the leg side for two runs by Smith, before one down the leg side is helped on its way for four leg byes. Smith pulls another short ball aerially into the mid-wicket area for four, safe shot because there's no-one there.

  125. Commentary

From Tim in the TMS inbox: "Stevo, Re 3rd over.  Am I the only reader slightly perturbed by the phrase “they are silenced as Edwards caresses him through the covers?” I thought that sort of thing only happens on The Tudors?"

  126. 13 overs Commentary WI 73-1

Ashwin is out-bowling Harbhajan comfortably at the moment. Hang on scrap that, Bravo has just blazed him over long-off for six glorious runs. It's like watching a Brian Lara clone. Bravo rocks back to the last ball and clatters Ashwin through the covers for four more. Magical batting.

"If I didn't know any better I'd say India were playing to face Sri Lanka (in the quarter-finals)."

  128. 14 overs Commentary WI 78-1

Yusuf Pathan is on for India and he's on the money, conceding five singles off the over. Dhoni needs a couple of wickets, because these two are rolling along no dramas.

  129. 15 overs Commentary WI 84-1

Ashwin continues, his eighth over, and he's looked less dangerous as he's got deeper into his spell. There's half an appeal for lbw as Bravo misses a straight one but it's too high, before Smith clips a couple off his legs from the final ball of the powerplay.

  130. BBC Test Match Special's Geoff Boycott
Contributor BBC Test Match Special's Geoff Boycott

"They need a couple of wickets, India. They can try to stifle runs if they want, but I can't see that working, so they've got to try and make something happen. Dhoni should be changing his bowlers more or something, he's got to force the issue."

  131. 16 overs Commentary WI 86-1 (Target 269)

Pathan has been accurate so far, only two singles off that over, he's doing a good holding job. Nothing wide, so Bravo pays him the respect he deserves. India were 86-2 at the same stage.

  132. 17 overs WICKET Bravo c Harbhajan b Raina 22

Suresh Raina is into the attack for India, it's like a feast of ineffective spin bowling so far. Smith plays one off his pads and runs hard for two, until a rank long-hop is hit by Bravo straight down the throat of Harbhajan at long-on. Woeful way to perish.

  133. 1417 DRINKS BREAK

As good a time as any to have a drinks break, I'd have thought. How big a wicket is that for India - West Indies were cruising. The partnership was worth 57 from 10.4 overs.

  134. 18 overs Commentary WI 94-2

Pathan continues and Ramnaresh Sarwan is the new batsman. Three singles from the over, Pathan isn't doing much with the ball but he's proving difficult to get away. He's got 0-10 from three overs.

  135. 19 overs Commentary WI 101-2

Raina is slightly back of a length and Devon Smith continues to devour anything short, cutting ferociously to the boundary for four. He gets to fifty with a push down the pitch to long-off, good knock from 63 balls that. The Windies hundred is up when Sarwan takes a quick single into the offside.

  136. Commentary

From David, TMS inbox: "Re G Boycott >13...14< overs - Could that be true, that teams are calculating the opposition they want in the next round and maybe even conspiring to lose? When does gamesmanship turn into sharp practice? I want to see cricket played between two teams trying their hardest to win."

  137. 20 overs Commentary WI 107-2 (Target 269)

After drinks (I think I went early with mine a couple of overs ago), Smith cuts yet another short ball outside off stump for four, surely the Indians have realised he quite likes it out there? Six from that Pathan over, might go all the way, this one.

  138. BBC Test Match Special's Geoff Boycott
Contributor BBC Test Match Special's Geoff Boycott

"India should want to play Australia because even though they've won the last three World Cups, they are not the force they once were. If they are relying on that spinner Krejza then I'm getting back into the nets now. My only worry would be that he would bowl his one superb delivery to me while my team-mates hit him all round the park."

  139. 21 overs Commentary WI 115-2

Now Sarwan's flashing past gully for four, this time Yuvraj the guilty party as he drops it a fraction short. More spin than Alistair Campbell bowling tweakers from the Pavilion End, this Indian team. Eight from the over, a pretty ineffective one by and large.

  140. 22 overs Commentary WI 118-2

As Munaf Patel waits on the boundary to see if he has any part to play in this game, Pathan continues, conceding three singles from that tidy over. Wonder what Dhoni's thinking.

  141. 23 overs Commentary WI 126-2

Devon Smith unleashes, giving Yuvraj a taste of his own medicine as he saunters down the track and hoists him into the crowd over mid-wicket for the first six of his increasingly crucial innings. Eight off the over, West Indies' progress is seamless.

  142. 24 overs Commentary WI 128-2

Pathan would struggle to bowl anyone's mum out with these gentle floaters, let alone Sir Geoffrey's. Another bizarrely harmless over sees West Indies collect two more and it's quiet in Chennai. Eerily.

  145. 25 overs Commentary WI 132-2

They remembered him! Munaf Patel gets his turn nearly halfway through the West Indies innings, Smith driving a couple and then taking a single to the cover boundary to move into the 70s. Four from the over, Windies nearly halfway there.

  146. BBC Test Match Special's Jonathan Agnew
Contributor BBC Test Match Special's Jonathan Agnew

"They look totally flat, India. The fielding is flat and a lot of people in the crowd have left in the last hour or so."

  147. 26 overs Commentary WI 139-2

Sarwan whacks Pathan over mid-wicket for four, one bounce, super classy stroke. That's a false shot as Sarwan chops uppishly, the ball falls just short of point. A drive into the off side brings two more for Sarwan.

  148. 27 overs Commentary WI 146-2 (Target 269)

Patel isn't looking too threatening either, he's getting a bit of bounce but doesn't look like getting anyone out. Sarwan hooks to fine leg, where Tendulkar picks the ball up on the bounce, touch risky from Sarwan. Patel then bowls short and wide to a salivating Smith, who presumably cuts to the boundary for four with dribble running down his face. They won't learn, will they?

  149. SMS

From Anon: "I think India are making a mistake running scared of Australia and trying to face Sri Lanka..."

  150. 28 overs Commentary WI 146-2

Harbhajan Singh comes leaping and bounding back into the attack for India - surely this boy's too passionate to let the game drift away? Six dot balls = maiden over, Harbhajan giving Sarwan nothing at all to hit.

  151. Commentary

From Paul in the TMS inbox: "So am I right in thinking a Windies win would put England against Pakistan in the quarters, and an India win would put them against Sri Lanka?"

That's the way it looks, yep. Thoughts?

  152. 29 overs Commentary WI 149-2

Patel is bowling around the wicket to Smith and he plays and misses, the crowd are back in the game with nine dot balls in a row. Smith drives and Tendulkar's throw from the boundary is way off, could've been a run-out issue there. Patel finds another false shot in Smith armoury with a slower ball. Good over, but India need wickets.

  153. 30 overs Commentary WI 154-2 (Target 269)

Harbhajan twirls away and Smith cuts him away for a single to bring up the West Indian 150. These two might as well be sipping rum on the beach, totally untroubled. Five from the over, India look impotent.

  154. Twitter

From dollars2403: "India are yet to beat a decent team at this World Cup and yet are one of the favourites... baffling."

  155. 30.3 overs WICKET Smith b Zaheer 81

Dhoni brings Zaheer Khan back into the attack, it's a bit of a last-gasp attempt at breathing some life back into the game and it works almost immediately as Devon Smith misses a drive and Zaheer sneaks one through, hitting his off stump. Always does well against left-handed batsmen.

  156. 31 overs Commentary WI 156-4 (Target 269)

Here comes the big man. Kieron Pollard, one of the great hitters in the tournament, is in for West Indies. A dog wanders on to the pitch and delays us by a few moments before Pollard pushes up to long-off for a single to get off the mark. Good return from Zaheer. He's got seven overs left, too.

  157. Commentary

From Sachin, California, in the TMS inbox: "So, by now it should be clear who is facing who in the QFs? Not to me yet, as I am not sure how that is decided."

    Right

  158. 31.5 overs WICKET Pollard c Pathan b Harbhajan 1

Harbhajan hits Sarwan on the pad and stifles an appeal, but nothing doing there. India have got their big guns on now, and Pollard - just like Afridi on Saturday - cannot resist the big shot, trying to club a quality off spinner over long-on and holing out to Yusuf Pathan. It's utterly brainless cricket.

  159. 32 overs Commentary WI 157-4 (Target 269)

West Indies wicket-keeper Devon Thomas blocks the last ball of Harbhajan's over and he must now stay with Sarwan for a few overs.

  160. Commentary

From Jonathan, London, in the TMS inbox: "Sri Lanka's got to be better for us, they've got fewer bowling options & a shorter batting line-up. Plus I wouldn't fancy our faltering batting against the likes of Gul & Afridi."

Fewer bowling options? You've got to be kidding me.

  161. 33 overs Commentary WI 159-4 (Target 269)

Zaheer races in and beats Thomas's outside edge, beautiful left-arm pace bowling, slanting it across the batsman. Thomas gets off the mark with a quick single into the off side, two from the over and India have turned up the heat in Chennai.

  162. 34 overs Commentary WI 160-4 (Target 269)

Harbhajan is on-song, getting bounce and drift and causing a problem to Sarwan and Thomas with almost every ball. He appeals for lbw against Sarwan from the last ball of the over, but it pitched outside leg stump.

  163. SMS

From Alex: "I think Sri Lanka would pose a stronger challenge than Pakistan, but then again you don't know which Pakistan side is going to turn up. If both teams stepped it up from a somewhat dodgy group stage, we could be on for the match of the tournament so far."

  164. 34.2 overs WICKET Thomas st Dhoni b Yuvraj 2

Haha, both wicket-keepers have been stumped in this game - I wonder when the last time that happened was? Yuvraj is back on for Zaheer and Dhoni's captaincy has turned golden. Yuvraj floats one up and gets it to turn, Thomas is drawn forward and over-balances and Dhoni whips off the bails like lightning.

  165. Commentary

From Gavin, Kuala Lumpur, in the TMS inbox: "The quarter-final fixtures are getting clearer but how are the semis worked out, Stevo? Draw from a hat? If you don’t post this I’ll know you have as much idea as me, I can’t find the answer anywhere!"

Um... ah... er... hey, look over there... *runs away*

  166. 35 overs Commentary WI 161-5 (Target 269)

Darren Sammy is the new man at the crease, he needs to play a captain's innings for his team. Yuvraj beats his attempted drive and then Sammy gets off the mark with a single on the back foot into the leg side. India were 188-3 at the same stage of their innings.

  167. 35.3 overs WICKET Sammy run out (Raina) 2

Munaf Patel comes back on for India, Sammy clipping one off his pads for a single. But Sammy, who has had a pretty useless game all in all, then charges halfway down the pitch from the non-striker's end, Sarwan sends him back because there's never a run and Raina throws it back to Patel, who whips the bails off. Sammy, what have you done? Windies are chucking it away. Sound familiar?

  168. 36 overs Commentary WI 164-6 (Target 269)

Andre Russell is the new man and unless he sticks around with Sarwan for a little while this could all be over very quickly. Three off the over and a kamikaze, inexplicable run out.

  169. 37 overs WICKET Russell c Pathan b Yuvraj 0

Yuvraj is enjoying this spell an awful lot more than his last one. He beats Russell's outside edge, before Russell tries to cut and misses, that one was too close to his body. He drives into the covers, where Raina prevents four with a brilliant diving stop. One from the over, the pressure is getting to Russell and he cuts the last ball straight to Pathan at point. Hopeless shot.

"He didn't have to move, Pathan. If he'd opened his mouth he'd have caught that. It's a bit stupid this from West Indies, you expect people to learn."

  171. 38 overs Commentary WI 168-7 (Target 269)

Sulieman Benn has a swing and a miss from Munaf Patel, gets nowhere near it really. West Indies are about 12-5 from the last seven overs, incredible collapse. Three from the over and Sarwan has a heck of a one-man task now.

  172. Twitter

From Chprdhrv: "A win here is all well and good for India, but so far, a lacklustre tournament."

  173. 39 overs Commentary WI 174-7 (Target 269)

West Indies take the batting powerplay, guess they haven't got much choice. Sarwan chances his arm and batters Harbhajan over midwicket, before taking a single to put Benn back on strike. He misses one that gets Harbhajan excited about a potential bat-pad, before one from a length rears up and hits Benn's helmet. He takes it off and inspects, before calmly putting it back on.

  174. 40 overs WICKET Benn c Patel b Zaheer 3 (WI 179-8)

Zaheer bowls to Benn, who takes a quick single into the offside and might've been out had there been a direct hit at the bowler's end. Two wides follow as Dhoni fumbles a poor Zaheer ball, they are taking quick singles but Benn takes about 22 yards to get going, he's a big lumbering unit between the wickets. From the last ball Benn chips in the air to mid-on, where Munaf Patel takes a catch on his knees.

  175. Commentary

Darren, Bristol, TMS inbox: "Stevo, I'm confused. Do India want to win or lose this match now? Questionable tactics for 30 or so overs, now they seem as though they're interested. It's madness I tell you, madness!"

  176. Commentary

From Daniel, Watford, in the TMS inbox: "Re. Gavin in KL not being able to find the SF line up - the ICC web site has a handy 56 page rule book which gives the SF as follows: Winner (Pakistan v B4) v Winner (Australia v B2), Winner (Sri Lanka v B3) v Winner (NZ v SA). Err...obviously it doesn't say exactly that - I've filled in Group A."

  177. 41 overs Commentary WI 182-8 (Target 269)

Devendra Bishoo is in now, it's all a bit too late for West Indies, who have collapsed dramatically and disappointingly. Ashwin is back, seems like years since he bowled, and there are only three off the over. Windies need 87 from 54 balls. Which ain't happening.

  178. 41.1 overs WICKET Sarwan c Ashwin b Zaheer 39

That's that, then. Sarwan has no choice but to unleash and he slices one from Zaheer full and outside the off stump to Ashwin, running in off the extra-cover boundary. West Indies are on the brink of capitulation.

  179. 42 overs Commentary WI 186-9 (Target 269)

Last man in is Ravi Rampaul, who bowled superbly for West Indies earlier today. Bishoo cuts high to third man for a one-bounce four, lovely stroke from the talented leggie. He digs out a Zaheer yorker, good lad. Token add: they need 83 from 48 balls.

  180. 43 overs WICKET Rampaul b Ashwin 1

Bishoo tries a reverse sweep off Ashwin and misses, the ball hitting him too high to be lbw. Rampaul tries to clatter the last ball of the over into next week and gets only thin air. You miss, I hit, says Ashwin, and it's game over.

  181. 1618 Commentary

  183. Commentary

India's Zaheer Khan (3-26): "We knew it would be difficult with the new ball, but when it was old the ball wasn't coming on to the bat and started swinging a bit and we knew we could get back into the game. 184. SMS

India captain MS Dhoni: "The whole 50 overs is important - if you're batting you have to finish it off well, and the same when bowling, it's not just the first five or 10 overs that count. The last 10 overs of our innings is a concern, but in the quarters hopefully you will see us at our best. Australia are a very good side, they play good cricket and are expressive on the field, but it's not about them, it's about us and what we do."

  188. Commentary

Man of the match Yuvraj Singh: "I was hitting it in the middle of the bat straight away today and it felt good. I was struggling with my stomach this morning and got cramps during the innings, but I wanted to stay out there as long as possible."

  189. Twitter

From nishit_patani: "I've seen like some five World Cups now and this is the worst one. No team looks like a real winner."

  190. 1640 Commentary Semi-final fixtures:

    South Africa/New Zealand v Sri Lanka/England

    Pakistan/West Indies v Australia/India

If England beat Sri Lanka, they would stay in Colombo for their semi-final.

  191. Commentary

From Ken Williams, TMS inbox: "That makes the semi-finalists the three from the sub-continent plus South Africa. India will beat Aus, Pakistan will beat a disappointing WI, Sri Lanka will smash England, an South Africa will romp home against the Kiwis."

  192. 1647 Commentary

On that note of negativity from our Ken, it's time to bail. We didn't get our 100th 100 from Sachin, or even a decent run chase, but at least we know the quarter-final line-up, a month into the tournament. Ben Dirs will be in the chair on Wednesday for Pakistan v West Indies, so join him then. Ciao.
