Wigging Out With Must Love Cats

Paws-ing for Art, Fun and Beauty

It's hard to believe that "Must Love Cats" has just two episodes left in this season's journey with John Fulton. Every cat-lover would prefer that the road trips just go on and on, hitting every hamlet and hometown on and off the map. Seeing how many different ways people celebrate cats, and how many cats enjoy the spotlight, is so much more fun than a sit com about humans who think they're clever (and really, when you watch a half-hour comedy, aren't you always secretly hoping a cat will steal a scene just to juice up the action?).

Must-love-cats-wigging-out-200x150Last week's stop at the famed Algonquin Hotel was an eye-opener for many who knew the place only as the favorite gathering place of legendary New York writers from the past, such as Dorothy Parker. But a cat on duty to greet visitors is a feature every hotel should consider. Skip the continental breakfast and add a tabby or two! And the amazing artwork of Catskill artists, with each street sculpture unique and beautiful, should inspire others to do the same. Similar street sculptures of pandas, donkeys and elephants popped up in Washington D.C. a few years ago, and other cities had horses or fish--but none had the staying power of the Catskill cats, with new pieces each season luring visitors to ooh and ahh. The piece made just for John, featuring a suitcase and a cat, was especially cool!

This week John is headed for the Southwest. His Texas stopover includes a visit to Fort Worth's Kitty Wigs, whose website enables cat owners to take memorable "glamour shots" of their felines sporting the most glorious, chic headpieces any cat could imagine. In Austin, John meets some big cats--not lions or tigers but big, as in hefty, housecats, and looks into the city's fat cat epidemic, which has too many kitties with very wide waistlines.

But Cody's box habit led to an unexpected cross-country journey, and he and John compare travel notes. Since you can't go to Texas without visiting the Alamo, John does---and encounters the landmark's cat custodian, who's not at all sure about befriending this guitar-playing guy from up North. John also makes a stop at Kitty City on the way to New Mexico. Kitty City is THE "El Dorado" of cat sanctuaries. And back in California,  the animal rescue foundation in Walnut Creek offers a twist on finding your soul mate with its "Meet Your Match" program, pairing up lonely cats with compassionate cat-parents. Of course, all the applicants "Must Love Cats"! Through every stop, John adds musical inspiration with his original songs that pay tribute to the simple joy of cats in our lives every day.

"Must Love Cats" airs at 8 p.m. Saturdays. with a rebroadcast of the previous week's episode at 7 p.m. Be sure to visit the site during the season finale on Saturday, March 19 for a special treat, a live chat with the king of kitty ditties himself.

Every dog will have its day, but cats also rule. Kathy Blumenstock, also known as "The Mole," is the cat lover’s sherpa to the latest feline 411. She is also proudly owned by her cats Starli and Shamrock. Meet Kathy.
