Shanghai Joins the Mickey Mouse Club

Friday April 15, 2011

Mainland China is getting its very own Disney World theme park. The Walt Disney Co. broke ground on the $3.7 billion Shanghai Disneyland last week.

Set to open in 2015 or 2016, Shanghai Disneyland is expected to have many Chinese features including a moat surrounding the perimeter of the park that is reminiscent of the Forbidden City, according to the LA Times. To enter the park, guests will be whisked in boats across a 100-acre lake.

3-D Porno Coming to Movie Theaters in Hong Kong and Taiwan

The world's first 3-D erotica film, 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy (3D肉蒲團之極樂寶鑑), hits theaters Friday, April 14 in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

While the stunning 3-D soft core porno is the first of its kind to hit theaters, the plot is familiar. Its predecessor, Sex and Zen, was a blockbuster in Hong Kong in 1991.

The racy flick, which is banned in China, is about a Ming Dynasty scholar who believes, because life is short, people should have as much sexual pleasure as possible. The Hong Kong porno is based on 肉蒲团 (ròupútuán, The Carnal Prayer Mat), a comedic erotic novel written by 李渔 (Li Yu), a Qing Dynasty playwright, novelist and publisher.

I've been to a 3-D IMAX film before, but none like this. I'm sure it will be a movie experience I won't soon forget.

Watch the trailer here (no, it's not X-rated - the film has the equivalent of an NC-17 rating - and it takes a minute or two for the website to load).

It was only a matter of time.

Amy Chua, the Yale professor and author of Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, has something to say to all those who have criticized her parenting style. Her daughter, Sophia Chua-Rubenfeld, is headed to Harvard, according to website Above the Law.

Chua ignited a firestorm of controversy earlier this year after an excerpt of her book, in which she detailed her strict and pushy parenting style, appeared on WSJ.com. The piece, entitled "Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior," included a list of things her two daughters were never allowed to do:

The whereabouts of China's most famous artist, Ai Weiwei, are unknown after he blocked from leaving China Sunday, according to the Associated Press. This is not the first time Ai was been prevented from leaving. In the latest incident, Ai was going through customs at Beijing Capital International Airport when he was escorted away by officials Sunday. His house in Beijing has been searched, his wife Lu Qing has been questioned, and his studio and its workers have been searched and questioned.
