My Newest TV Obsession: The Killing

Wednesday April 6, 2011

Don't you just love it when a new series comes along and you instantly fall in love? I've found my newest TV addiction  -- AMC's crime drama The Killing.

From the network that has brought us Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series such as Mad Men and Breaking Bad comes The Killing, a mystery that centers around the murder of Rosie Larsen, the teenage daughter of a hard working blue collar family. Set in Seattle, each episode represents one day in the life of the investigation (there are 13 episodes in season one), so viewers can expect many twists and turns as the two main detectives in the case to leave absolutely no stone unturned.

The series features three interlocking stories: The two homicide detectives assigned to the case, the grieving Larsen family and a city councilman running for mayor -- each character has something to hide and everyone becomes a suspect at some point. Unlike many crime dramas on television, The Killing goes that extra step to  give viewers a realistic point of view of a murder investigation from all sides rather than compromise certain elements in order "dumb it down"  for the sake of ratings.

If you didn't watch the two-hour premiere last week, there are several more chances to catch it before the next new episode airs on Sunday (at 10pm ET). The first half hour is a bit slow, but once the investigation gets underway, you'll be hooked!

Mad Men is Ending... In Three Seasons

Monday April 4, 2011

All good things must come to an end and in the case of AMC's hit series Mad Men, the end is now in sight...

After months of negotiations between series creator Matt Weiner and AMC and Lionsgate, a deal has been reached to bring the series back next year... but the deal also puts an end date on the series. According to TV Guide, Weiner will lead the show through the next two seasons, with an option for the third season. The actors are contracted through season 6, but it's widely felt that they will agree to continue through the seventh and final season.

"I think that's how long the story is," Weiner tells TV Guide. "I'm not The Simpsons. I look at TV shows that I admire, and I think this is the length that they should be. At a certain point you're driven to a desire not to repeat yourself. I want the show to end before the machinery has worn out."

And I believe he's right. When it comes to TV, there is nothing worse than a show that has long since died creatively that still goes on and on and on. I think it's smart to put an end date on the series. Lost did it and once ABC agreed to put an end date on the show, the creators were then able to carefully plan out the remainder of the series to ensure every story got told in order to make the series complete.

Aside from the incredible talent, one of the most important aspects of the series has been the way men and women of the '60s are portrayed. From the clothes to the use of cigarettes and alcohol, no detail has been spared to make us feel like we've been transported back to the '60s. Over the last four seasons, the series has covered the time period 1960 (March) to 1965 (October); will season seven bring them into that groovy '70s era? Will we get a chance to see Don Draper in bell bottoms before the series ends?

Season five of Mad Men is now due to return in March of 2012 -- and will end sometime between 2014 and 2015.

Grey's Anatomy Musical Episode: Hit or Miss?

Friday April 1, 2011

The Grey's Anatomy musical episode was one of the most anticipated episodes of the season -- but was it worth all the fuss? Did you love it or hate it?

When I first learned that series creator Shonda Rhimes was going to create a musical episode, I was very skeptical, even once I learned the episode would be centered around series star Sara Ramirez (who happens to be a Tony winner). My biggest fear was that the episode would be campy and do nothing to further the plot -- and boy was I wrong! While I have mixed feelings about some of the musical numbers, I have to admit that the episode was one of the most powerful of the season.

Actors of the Night

The episode's standout star was Eric Dane, who captured the raw emotion any father-to-be in this situation would be experiencing. This episode may arguably be some of the best work of his career. I think going forward we are going to continue to see Dane hit it out of the park as he deals with the problems his severely premature baby will be facing. Jessica Capshaw was also equally amazing in the episode as Arizona dealt with the possibility of losing Callie, as well as feeling helpless when she was cut out of the decision-making process because as Mark said, she is "nothing." I smell an Emmy nod!

The Music

I felt like some of the musical numbers were a bit too much, but they certainly displayed some of the incredible talent on the Grey's cast. Aside from the incredible vocal work by Ramirez, special kudos goes out to Kevin McKidd, Chyler Leigh and Chandra Wilson. My favorite musical number of the night -- the Fray's 'How to Save a Life.'

All in all, I liked the episode musically, loved it on an emotional level, but I think I could do without another musical episode.

So, what did you all think about the musical episode? Was it a hit or an epic fail? Vote now in our poll and post your thoughts below...

Jonathan Groff Returning to Glee

Thursday March 31, 2011

Fool her once, shame on you; fool her twice, shame on the Glee Club! Rachel better watch out -- Jesse St. James is coming back to stir the pot once again.

According to TV Line, actor Jonathan Groff is set to return to Glee this spring for the final three episodes of the season and it appears as though he may be back for more than Nationals... he may be looking to win back Rachel's heart. The last time we saw Groff, his character romanced Rachel to spy on New Directions before Regionals and as if that wasn't enough, he humiliated her by nailing her with eggs in front of his peers.

Coincidentally, Charice is due to return as Sunshine for several episodes this spring as well. The last time we saw Sunshine, Vocal Adrenaline's new coach (played by Cheyenne Jackson) stole her away from New Directions. Is Jesse really looking to make up for his horrible behavior or will he break Rachel's heart once again (can't this poor girl get a break in the love department) when the two groups go up against each other at Nationals?

More Great Guest Stars

Also due to return to the show this spring is Kristen Chenoweth, who will perform an original song titled, "It's 10 am, I'm Drunk." Apparently, her role in the all-white version of The Wiz didn't exactly go as expected. Cheyenne Jackson returns when the show comes back from hiatus on April 19 and will join Sue Sylvester's "Legion of Doom" (a.k.a. the I hate Will Schuester club). Oscar-winner Gwyneth Paltrow is also set to bring her popular character Holly Holiday back to the show to knock our socks off once again.

It's a wonderful time to be a Glee fan, isn't it?!
