President Bashar al-Assad has defied expectations on Wednesday that he would lift Syria's decades-old emergency law after nearly two weeks of protests that have presented the gravest challenge to his 11-year rule.

Addressing the nation for the first time since the start of the unprecedented wave of protests, inspired by uprisings across the Arab world, Assad said he supported reform but offered no new commitment to change Syria's one-party political system.

Al Jazeera's correspondents have more on this developing story.

  • @Tommy4216 WOW you're lucky to be, ask me im syrian and life in syria is unbearable!!!!, people simply love the president cuz they're BRAINWASHED, there's no reason for loving him, especially after the killing of civilians (he said it was because other people started shooting and making a mess... BULLSHIT)

  • Tell you the truth Bashar seems a bit retarded....The whole speech looked grotesque with his paid supporters hailing him every 5 minutes ,one even wishing him to be the ruler of the world..WTF people? have you lost your mind. He is probably a puppet pulled by the Syrian Generals still clinging their fat asses to their chair of power. I pity the Syrian people for having this idiot and entourage ruling them all...And what about the giggles? are you for real ? what a nobody!

  • @madkillaaa Actually Their would be no Hezbolla if Assad would stop giving them weapons...Syria just needs to stop supporting them and they will slowly die.

  • @MrEupheu those people need to be given the oscar for their good acting lol

  • @madkillaaa well it's true that a lot of people are scared, but some people (like my stupid brother) actually love him and support him, and im like WHAT THE F***!!!!!, they think he did good things to the country, maybe he did do a little bit of development, but hey we're in the 21st century now, and syria is rated in the 10 most corrupted countries.

  • like father, like son, dictators. i wish syrians good luck in their fight. God bless.

  • @TheCatooz Is that you? Bashar al-Asshat? Nasrallah want's to know if you can send him some more pictures of sun light.

  • @Solaris2291 are u dumb?

israel needs syria to get rid of hezbollah

  • hes right ... there is a conspiracy ... its called freedom

  • @Solaris2291

    Israel is the Fourth Reich!

  • It is sad that such a great nation with great people has been led by such a tyrant sadistic family. Assads and their relatives should be brought to justice for their crimes against humanity.

He blames it all on conspirators when he and his suck up supporters are the conspirators. Israel is Heaven compared to you. A so called elected by his own people would not murder his own people.
