Spring is now in full swing in Austria. Although some resorts have seen snow this week, it hasn't been a considerable amount and on the lower slopes this fell as rain. Cloudy skies were reported in many areas on Thursday 31st March, so a little more snow is possible up high.

There is still some good skiing to be found despite the spring weather and you shouldn't be put off if you're heading to the slopes soon. If you head out early and get up high, you'll find hard packed slopes which will soften throughout the day. This is the case in Kitzbuhel (25/50cm) where cold overnight temperatures are helping to preserve the 5cm that fell on Tuesday 29th March. The most recent resort to have received snow is Ischgl (10/120cm) where a light dusting fell on Thursday 31st March and conditions here, although spring-like in the afternoon, are still very good.

The majority of resorts aren't likely to see anything more than a few centimetres of snow this week and this is only likely to fall on the upper slopes. Some resorts however, notably Obergurgl (35/145cm) and Pitztal (87/284cm) are expected to receive around 25cm so the best advice is to head to the higher resorts to get the best snow. This snowfall is forecast to arrive early next week. Expect milder temperatures and rain on the lower slopes though as the freezing level is set to break above the 3000m mark.

A predominantly bright week is forecast across Europe with some periods of snow and rain expected at the beginning of next week. The mild temperatures will continue with the freezing level rising to above 3000m on occasion. Overnight temperatures will drop to around -7C mid-week which will help the snow conditions and will allow the pisteurs to maintain the slopes well.

Italy is expected to receive the most snow this week with around 25cm expected at the glacier resorts. The snowfall will be concentrated to such higher areas as well as the resorts in the far east of the country. It is unlikely that elsewhere will receive any more than a few centimetres.

It's a similar story in Austria where a similar amount of snow is expected at the highest resorts with the lower resorts only likely to receive a light dusting. The mild weather will continue here and there could also be some periods of rain.

Switzerland and France will have a mainly sunny week with very little snowfall expected to fall. Overnight temperatures will help though and will keep the slopes in good condition, particularly in the morning when they are firm.
