Application Requirements for English as a Foreign Language

Applicants must be at least 17 years old and have completed a secondary school education.  In order to guarantee admission, all application items must be received by the deadline dates listed on the application.  Please submit all items listed below:

  • Application Form:  All information must be complete.
  • Application Fee:  US$50 check payable to Georgetown University through a US bank.  This fee is non-refundable.
  • Advance Deposit:  US$200 check payable to Georgetown University, applied to tuition.  This fee is refundable only if written notification of cancellation is received by the EFL Office before the program starting date.
  • Evidence of eligibility for the program:  Documents showing proof of secondary school completion or of university or other studies.  Official transcripts of courses and grades are not required.  Please send copies (not originals) of the documents in English.
  • Passport:  Please enclose a copy of your passport.
  • Passport-size photo of yourself.


Admission to EFL does not constitute admission to any other Georgetown University program. 

Students should not anticipate admission to the University upon completion of an EFL program.

Late Applications

Students whose application materials arrive after the program deadline may be deferred to the next semester.  No tuition deposit refund is given to students who withdraw or cancel following a late application.

Cancellations/Withdrawals

If you are unable to attend the EFL program once you have been admitted, you must notify the EFL Office in writing. Georgetown will return your $200 tuition deposit only if your written notification is received by the EFL Office before the first day of the program. A fax, email, or letter is acceptable.

If you withdraw from the EFL program after the program has begun, you must write a letter of withdrawal and submit it to the EFL Office. Your tuition refund is calculated from the date you officially notify the EFL Office. No refund is given for laboratory, activity, or Yates Field House fees, or health insurance if you withdraw after the first week.

Fall and Spring Semester Intensive English Programs, Business and Professional English Program

  • Before first day of session:  100%
  • 1st-5th working days of session:  Full tuition minus deposit
  • 6th-10th working days of session:  75%
  • 11th-15th working days of session:  50%
  • After 15th day of session:  No refund

Summer 8-week Intensive English Program

  • Before first day of session:  100%
  • 1st-5th working days of session:  Full tuition minus deposit
  • 6th-10th working days of session:  50%
  • After 10th working day:  No refund

Summer 3-week American Conversational English, Winter 4-week American Language and Culture

  • Before first day of session:  100% of tuition
  • After first day of session:  No refund
