Job Profile 

The Manager, Discussion Programmes is responsible for commissioning and supervising all aspects of production of discussion programmes for Al Jazeera English. This involves developing programme ideas in line with the channel’s strategies, recruiting and managing production teams, supervising independent producers and ensuring that all programmes from whatever source are delivered to the highest editorial standards, on time and within budget.
The Manager, Discussion Programmes reports to the Director of Programmes.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities 

• Develop programme proposals for discussion series and special events in collaboration with colleagues in Al Jazeera English
• Contribute to the formulation of Al Jazeera English’s programming strategy, drawing on the Network’s editorial vision and strategic goals
• Ensure integration of production for TV and online, including building community through online social networks
• Recruit and line manage production teams for programmes made in house, drawing on staff and freelance resources
• Assess the performance of in house production staff and plan their career development including training
• Commission independent producers, subject to Al Jazeera’s policy and procedures for external commissions
• Identify and nurture new programme making talent, especially in the emerging world

Person Specification
Essential Skills 

• Directing and producing studio-based and location-based discussion programmes
• Series producing discussion programmes (supervising production of an entire series of programmes)
• Executive producing discussion programmes (acting as ultimate editorial authority and manager on either individual programmes or series)
• Recruiting and motivating teams, both project-based and permanent
• Strategic thinking combining editorial vision and creativity with analysis of research data and financial information
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills in English and preferably in at least one other Network language (Arabic, Turkish, Serbo-Croat) or a language important to Al Jazeera English’s audiences (Indian languages, Bahasa, Tagalog)
• Outstanding interpersonal skills appropriate for a multi-cultural, multi-lingual environment

Working Experience 

• 10-15 years’ experience of producing and series producing discussion programmes and special events for top-quality broadcasters with international reach
• Experience of living and working in at least two of Al Jazeera English’s main audience areas (North America; Europe; Africa; Middle East; south Asia; east Asia/Australia)
• Life and/or experience in a multi-cultural environment

Academic / Education Qualification 

University-level education desirable but not essential if skills and working experience are outstanding
