MOUNTAIN VIEW, California (TheStreet) -- Google(GOOG) plans to spend as much as $100 million to commission low-cost video content designed exclusively for the Web, and to organize its YouTube content around "channels," The Wall Street Journal reported.

In looking to compete with broadcast and cable television, YouTube would need to entice users to stay on the Web site longer, and to convince advertisers it will reach desirable consumers, people familiar with the matter told the Journal.

YouTube plans to highlight sets of channels around topics such as arts and sports; about 20 or so channels will feature several hours of professionally produced original programming a week, some of the people said.

Additional channels would be assembled from content already on YouTube.

A YouTube spokesman declined to comment on the new initiatives for the Journal.

"YouTube saw incredible growth in 2010 and we're excited about the future," he said.
