Copyright Clearance Center Launches ‘Get It Now' For Academic Institutions

Complement to Interlibrary Loan Service Processes Requests In Less Than Five Minutes

Charter Participants Include the California State University System and The State University of New York at Geneseo

DANVERS, MA. — Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), a not-for-profit organization and leading provider of licensing solutions, announced the launch of 'Get It Now.' The service complements academic institutions‟ Interlibrary Loan (ILL) borrowing services by providing immediate fulfillment of full-text articles from unsubscribed journals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through a single, cost-effective and easy-to-use application, integrated directly into a user‟s workflow.

Get It Now was developed with the participation of The California State University system, one of the largest university systems in the world, and the Information Delivery Services (IDS) Project at The State University of New York at Geneseo. It includes content from leading journal publishers, including Elsevier, John Wiley & Sons, Wolters Kluwer, Nature Publishing Group and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Additional publishers are being added on an ongoing basis.

If patrons wish to read articles from a journal not currently subscribed to by their institution‟s library, they can either choose to borrow the articles via traditional ILL or click the Get It Now link within their search results and have the content emailed to them. Average turnaround time for Get It Now articles is less than five minutes. According to a recent study in the journal College & Research Libraries, the average time for a traditional ILL delivery is between five and seven days. Get It Now delivers high-quality, accessible, full-color PDFs of journal content in minutes. It eliminates the need for credit card transactions by offering monthly institutional invoicing and has several safeguards in place to prevent misuse. Get It Now can also be accessed by librarians via an “Addon” in OCLC‟s ILLiad application.

Get It Now supplements CCC‟s Annual Copyright License for Academic Institutions, allowing institutions that hold the license to obtain content through the Get It Now service and share it internally in many ways, including email, postings to e-reserves and course management systems, inclusion in coursepacks or for classroom handouts and scholarly research.

“Our priority is to serve today‟s faculty, students and other scholarly researchers with 24 X 7 access to journal articles they need in digital formats,” said Gerry Hanley, Senior Director, Academic Technology Services at the California State University Office of the Chancellor. “By leveraging our excellent content discovery services with Get It Now, our libraries can fulfill our patrons‟ requests within minutes and do so cost-effectively. We are able to customize Get It Now so it aligns with local priorities and practices of our diverse campus environments.”

“CCC‟s Get It Now is one of the most exciting things to happen in Interlibrary Loan because it significantly streamlines article procurement processing and reduces turnaround times to near full-text speed,” said Cyril Oberlander, Interim Director, SUNY Geneseo.

“The initial response to Get It Now has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Diane Pierson, Vice President, Marketing, Copyright Clearance Center. “We look forward to adding additional institutions and publishers to this innovative program.”
