Libya: African Union Proposed Ceasefire Rejected

April 12th, 2011 by Kyle

On Monday, the Transitional National Council rejected the African Union proposed ceasefire and plan to create peaceful negotiations.  The opposition declared that the “road map” was “outdated”  in light of the destruction that took place following Gadhafi’s previous calls for a ceasefire.  Council spokesman Mustafa Jabril stated: “The demand of our people from day one was that Gadhafi must step down.” He continued: “Any initiative which does not include this key popular demand will not be regarded. Muammar Gadhafi and his sons should depart immediately.”  The plan called for a ceasefire, protection of civilians, safe passage of all humanitarian aid, dialogue between the two sides, and political reforms which “meet the aspirations of the Libyan people.” As the meetings took place in Benghazi between African Union representatives and the opposition, thousands of protesters gathered outside expressing their anger over the proposed plan.
