If you are experiencing difficulties with an upgrade, please delete the NYTimes app, reboot your device and reinstall the app in iTunes. To remove the app, touch and hold the NYTimes application icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the X in the corner of the icon, then confirm the deletion in the window that appears. If you are still having problems after deleting and reinstalling the app, please contact us at iphone@nytimes.com.

  • 15. How do I update and sync content?

To sync, pull down on the article list from any news section in the app. A new sync will also begin each time you open the app, and syncing occurs periodically while you use the app. You can turn off the automatic updating in the app settings on the right side of the Top News title bar. In Settings, you can also turn article image syncing on or off. Check the Updated status in the top left corner of the main Top News area to see when the last sync was performed.

To keep your connection active while syncing, you must leave the NYTimes app open. If the connection is interrupted for any reason, either to use another application or to receive a phone call, you may need to relaunch the app and restart the syncing process.

If the NYTimes iPhone app is in Offline Mode, you will not be able to update and sync content. To exit Offline Mode, go to the app settings on the right side of the Top News title bar. Under Offline Mode, move the switch to Off.

  • 16. How long does it take to sync?

All synchronization times are dependent upon network connectivity speed, which may be affected by factors such as Wi-Fi protocol, reception, signal strength, interference, proximity to cellular towers and Wi-Fi access points, total number of users on the service, Internet service provider performance, carrier performance, network conditions, etc.

For best results, we recommend using a Wi-Fi connection whenever possible. Please note that the syncing of article images is not recommended while using 3G or EDGE, as the impact upon battery and data usage may be noticeable.

  • 17. How do I e-mail or share an article?

You can share articles with friends via Twitter, Facebook and e-mail. To share an article, open the full article view. Tap the share icon in the bottom left corner to choose a sharing tool (Twitter, Facebook or e-mail). When you select Facebook or Twitter, you will be prompted to log in with your existing Facebook or Twitter user name and password. Tapping the E-Mail button will open a new outgoing message in the iPhone mail application. In all three cases, a summary and a link to the article will be filled in automatically as the body of your message.

  • 18. How do I perform a search?

We have temporarily removed search functionality from the NYTimes application so that we can work on improving the experience and the search results. We plan on adding the ability to search soon.

  • 19. How do I use AirPlay to stream video content from the NYTimes iPhone app to an external device?

You can use your Apple TV (or compatible third-party hardware) to stream video content from the NYTimes app. Your iPhone must be using a Wi-Fi connection and your Apple TV must be on the same network.

When the NYTimes app detects an Apple TV on the network, the AirPlay icon will appear on the video player. Tap the icon and select where you would like the video to play. Please note, AirPlay streaming requires iOS 4.2 or later.

  • 20. Can I use the NYTimes iPhone application when traveling?

Yes, but note that in the absence of a Wi-Fi connection, the NYTimes iPhone application uses your iPhone's cellular network connection to access and download content. Normal network data rates apply, and you may incur roaming charges while traveling. Check with your local carrier. Alternatively, you can enable Airplane Mode to browse and read previously stored news without incurring data access charges.

  • 21. Can I read the news if I'm not connected to a Wi-Fi network and I don't have cellular coverage?

Yes. The NYTimes iPhone application was designed to store content locally on your iPhone. Once you have completed the sync process, you will be able to access stored and saved content even if Airplane Mode is activated, or you do not have cellular network coverage. Note that only articles that have been fully downloaded will be available for offline reading.

For a better offline reading experience on the iPhone 3G and 3GS, switch to Offline Mode in the app settings. To enter Offline Mode, go to the NYTimes iPhone app settings on the right side of the Top News title bar. Under Offline Mode, move the switch to On.

  • 22. How do I change the font size?

While reading an article, you can tap the A icon at the bottom of the screen to increase or decrease the font size. You can also change the font size by pinch-zooming on the article text.

  • 23. What other settings can I change?

The application settings allow you to log in or register for an NYTimes account, turn Breaking News notifications on or off, control the automatic downloading and image syncing of content on your phone for offline reading, and switch to Offline Mode for a better offline reading experience on the iPhone 3G and 3GS. To access the application settings, tap the button on the right side of the Top News title bar.

  • 24. Why isn't the content in my NYTimes app being updated?

Content will not be updated while the app is in Offline Mode. To exit Offline Mode, go to the NYTimes iPhone app settings on the right side of the Top News title bar. Under Offline Mode, move the switch to Off. Please note: Offline Mode is available for the iPhone 3G and 3GS only.

If the app is not in Offline Mode and your content is not being updated correctly, first try re-syncing as described in "How do I update and sync content?" Note that there may be a slight syncing lag between the article lists and the full article content.

You can also reset the application. Go to the iPhone device Settings area (this is different than the settings within the NYTimes app) and select NYTimes. In the Troubleshooting area, move Reset on Next Start to On. All content will then be refreshed upon your next full sync. Caution: if you reset the application, any articles you have saved and any sections or blogs you have added to your Favorites list will be erased.

If these steps don't resolve the problem, try removing and reinstalling the application.

  • 25. Why don't I see any article images?

Not all articles include images, but if you don't see images in any articles at all, verify that images are set to sync automatically. Go to your NYTimes app settings on the right side of the main Top News area. Under Article Image Caching, make sure the switch is set to On.

  • 26. How do I remove the NYTimes iPhone application from my iPhone?

To remove the NYTimes app, follow the same procedure that you'd use for any other iPhone application. Touch and hold the NYTimes application icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the X in the corner of the icon, then confirm the deletion in the window that appears.

  • 27. Do I need to register for NYTimes.com to use the iPhone application?

No. You can download the NYTimes iPhone application and access some content without registering. However, full access requires registration and a subscription. If you have already registered with NYTimes.com, you can use the same user name and password to log in to the app. For full access, you must subscribe to a digital package that includes smartphone apps.

  • 28. What is the privacy policy for the NYTimes iPhone application?
