Job Summary

The Creative Commons legal internship provides a law student interested in intellectual property with the unique experience of exploring copyright laws from around the world and potentially interfacing with our network of international legal experts. The internship will focus on international intellectual property law, particularly copyright law. Ideal applicants should have completed their second year of study at a top tier law school and have significant interest in and experience with IP, including experience at a law firm or other legal organization. Law students with a background in computer science are especially encouraged to apply. Later round candidates may be asked to provide a writing sample. The intern will be based at the Creative Commons headquarters in Mountain View, California, near Mozilla, Google, Stanford and a number of prominent IP law firms.

Project Description

  • The intern will work with the CC legal team on international projects involving CC licenses and the CC Affiliate Network. This will include expanding the Jurisdiction Database, a collection of the key license terms among different jurisdictions, that is used by CC and its community for educational, academic and quality assurance purposes.
  • Research topics will include the intersection of copyright with other areas of law, conflict of laws issues relating to international copyright licensing, current developments in international intellectual property law and various ad hoc legal research related to open licensing.
  • The intern will also contribute to discrete research and writing projects that support CC’s legal tools. Please also be ready to assist with general office tasks in addition to focused projects.

Terms and Compensation

The internship will last for ten weeks from June 6 to August 12. All CC internships are full-time, temporary positions.

Creative Commons offers a stipend of $4,000, if not otherwise covered by grant funding. If your school offers a stipend for work-study or internships, this factor is figured into the compensation. This stipend may not be sufficient to cover living expenses in the bay area. No other benefits are provided. Interns must make their own housing, insurance, and transportation arrangements.
