Fete Accompli | Chanel’s Tribeca Film Festival Dinner

For a brief moment there, it looked like the peonies were going to outnumber the people at Monday night’s dinner at the Odeon for the Tribeca Film Festival Artist Program, which is sponsored by Chanel. But someone must have had an in with the fire marshal because by the time the steak frites made their round, the likes of Julian Schnabel, Patti Smith, Jeff Koons, Chiara Clemente, Jimmy Buffett, Lauren Hutton and Mirabelle, Melia and Brice Marden, were packed shoulder-to-shoulder, knee-to-knee, in a convivial, tequila and wine fueled scene that brought to mind the M.T.A. announcement about a crowded subway being no excuse for an inappropriate touch. Not that anyone seemed to be complaining. Among the artists being honored were the photographer Taryn Simon, the painter Clifford Ross and Mr. Tribeca Film Festival himself, Robert De Niro, who each contributed a work to be awarded, in lieu of a little gold statue, to the film festival winners. The Tribeca Film Festival runs through Sunday; the artworks will be on display through Wednesday at the New York Academy of Art, 111 Franklin Street.
