Any idea what's going on in this one? If you say this one is too easy...I'll be impressed.

Jack Eichenbaum's Geography Tour of the 7 Subway

Sunday April 24, 2011
7 subway One of my favorite Queens explorers is also the borough's official historian - Jack Eichenbaum. He's a professor of urban geography at Hunter College and leads walking tours throughout Queens and other boroughs, too, though Queens is definitely his most popular subject. He's a geographer, but that doesn't mean just the physical terrain of a place, but sights and people and tastes that define a neighborhood.

Check his website for his tours (You can always find his Queens tours in our weekend round-up, and often in articles like the Best of October in Queens.) What is very impressive is his attention to many corners of the borough, and his exhaustive knowledge of the communities along the path of the International Express, the elevated 7 subway.

Eichenbaum's signature tour is "World of the Number 7 Train," an all-day event held this year on April 30. The tour checks the old center of Long Island City, sees Sunnyside Gardens and downtown Flushing, and explores the multi-ethnic streets of Corona, Elmhurst, and Woodside, and the garden city experiment of Jackson Heights. That's a blitz of walking and traveling -- six separate neighborhood walks, but great fun to join an expert delving into one of the most demographically diverse areas in the country. It does includes time for you to get a good nosh of dim sum or Korean bbq in Flushing, just not much time for dawdling.

If you're interested in the "World of the Number 7 Train" Tour see Dr. Eichenbaum's contact info below. And enjoy one of my favorite paths through Queens!
