Burpees are one reason many 30, 40 and 50-year-olds hated grade school gym class. This simple, but tough, calisthenic exercise, along with push ups and sit ups, was central to our fitness routines 'back in the day.' Over the years, the burpee disappeared from most workout routines as fancy exercise equipment and massive machines filled the modern gyms.

Although the mainstream stopped using this simple, yet effective exercise, the burpee never went out of style in the military and law enforcement circles. And thanks to the return of bootcamp fitness programs, such as Crossfit, the dreaded burpee is back.

Yes, you can re-live the horror of grade school gym class once more, thanks to the burpee.

How To Do The Burpee Exercise

  1. Start by standing tall with feet shoulder width apart.
  2. Squat down and place your hands on the floor in front of you.
  3. Quickly kick your feet back to a push up position.
  4. Perform a push and just jump your feet back to start position.
  5. Jump high in the air and repeat.

Concussions in Children - Online Training for Coaches and Parents

Most kids will have a few minor bumps and bruises from time to time, but just how serious is a bump on the head?  According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), children and teenagers are more likely to get  a concussion than an adult, and take longer to recover from concusions.

The CDC is launching an online campaign aimed at teaching parents and coaches about the very serious nature of head injuries and concussions in youth sports.

Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports is a free, online course designed to help keep young athletes safe from concussion. If you are a coach, parent or athlete, take the time to learn to recognize and treat concussions and understand why it's important to report any suspected head injuries rather than just brush it off.


How Much Water Should You Drink?

If you exercise, you probably know you need to stay hydrated, but just how much water should you drink?


How much water or other fluid you need before, during and after exercise largely depends upon the intensity and duration of exercise. But other factors, such as the air temperature, humidity, altitude and even your own physiology can affect how much water you need during exercise.


Although it can be a difficult to determine exactly how much water individuals need to drink each day, the following recommendations will provide a good starting point for most athletes:

  • If you are training regularly, you will probably need between one half and one whole ounce of water (or other fluids) for each pound of body weight per day.

Basic Hydration Schedule

  • Before your workout, drink two to three cups of water within the two hours prior to exercise.
  • During exercise, drink one cup of water every 15 minutes.
  • After exercise, drink two to three Cups of water for each pound lost during exercise.
  • Endurance athletes have special hydration and energy needs.
