Which provinces in Chile have a strong German influence?
About 85 percent% of Chile's population lives in urban centers, with 40 percent living in greater Santiago. Most people in Chile have Spanish ancestry. Even so, the southern provinces of Valdivia, Llanquihue, and Osorno show a strong German influence. This stems from German immigration which began in 1848 and has lasted for 90 years. A small, yet influential number of Irish and English immigrants came to Chile during the colonial period. Other significant immigrant groups are Italian, Croatian, French, and Middle Eastern. About 800,000 Native Americans, mostly of the Mapuche tribe, reside in the south-central area.
